Exclusive: 'Vampire Diaries' Will Get Even Bloodier Next Season

The Vampire Diaries
trio tells Crushable that fans can expect some real vampire malice now that evil Katherine is back, and the brothers may experience some character changes in season

Next season, real chaos ensues as Katherine plays with the brothers' emotions, creating all sorts of love triangles. New unexpected friendships will be forged, largely out of the need to survive as Mystic Falls gets bloodier as the season progresses. And hearts will be broken. Stefan (Paul Wesley) will become darker, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) a little kinder and then they will switch again, they guessed at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival.

"He is a vampire and he has malice inside him," says Paul, who is sometimes way too into his character. "There are times when he is going to be tempted by blood and it would be a mistake to ignore that."

Who is the bigger threat to Stefan and Elena's relationship: Damon or Katherine? That depends, says Paul. "Stefan was in love with Katherine so he may be tempted, I wouldn't be surprised by that."

But don't expect to see a lot of skin la True Blood.

"I'm very content with not being nude on national television," says Nina Dobrev, who doubles as Elena and Katherine. "I enjoy True Blood myself and I watch the show, but I'm happy that bra and underwear is as stripped down as I can get for the show."

Paul is up for a little nudity, but only if it added to the plot. "I feel totally comfortable with whatever the writers come up with. I wouldn't want to do gratuitous stuff, but we all believe in the show and if that's what they really wanted we'd do it."

The three are tight off-screen and could usually be found together at the festival. "We keep each other grounded," Ian says. "We have a pact that if one of us starts to get out of control we'll step in. We're working on Paul now," he jokes.

Living in Atlanta has its benefits and downsides, the trio says. They're away from their friends and family and live a solitary life. But it enables them to wander the streets in relative anonymity.

"Minus the killing and the blood we basically live like vampires," says Nina. "We work at night, go to sleep during the day. We're very close; we hang out together and watch out for each other."

When asked what she does in her spare time she says, jokingly, "I sit and I chew gum."

Paul prefers backpacking, camping and white water rafting. And Ian can't wait to get back home to Louisiana to help with the oil cleanup. You'll find him cleaning oil off birds and doing public service announcements. And don't be surprised if you see him on Capitol Hill lobbying for stricter environmental laws one day soon.

"The oil spill is my worst nightmare," he says. "It's my home, my backyard is being destroyed by carelessness. I'm happy to be in Monte-Carlo, but I'm itching to get back and help out. We need more restrictive laws in place so this doesn't happen again. And we need to consider that if we need oil, maybe we should drill on land, not in the water where we can destroy the entire eco-structure."

Hot New Vampire Diaries Couple: Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev?!

Sat., Jan. 9, 2010 6:40 PM PST by Kristin Dos Santos

Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley, Nina Dobrev Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images

Riddle me this, Vampire Diaries fans: Executive Producer Julie Plec just told us, "The actress Nina Dobrev has kissed Ian Somerhalder but the character of Elena has not."

Say whosey whatsey what now?

Is Julie hinting that these two hot-as-fire co-stars are now a bonafide couple who are smooching behind the scenes?

Not so fast…

She's talking about--spoiler alert!--that other character Nina plays on TVD: Katherine.

[For the record, we aren't the only ones who were a wee bit stumped when Julie said the above statement at the TV Critics winter press tour tonight. Nina herself had to whisper the explanation to Paul Wesley.]

It seems Katherine (Nina) and Damon (Ian) will share some hot and steamy screentime in an upcoming episode.

"There's a big episode coming up that's all about Katherine," Nina told me exclusively after the panel session with reporters. "I love playing her because she's everything I'm not and I can get it all out of my system. I actually have modeled the character after Ian's performance of Damon, because he does it so well." So the chemistry is palpable, friends!

"I think what Elena will learn," Ian (Damon) tells me, "is that even though he is a diabolical jerk, Damon speaks the truth. He does not lie. And Stefan (Paul Wesley) has lied to her. So Damon will win Elena over in that capacity. And who's to say Stefan isn't a little bit evil anyway? He definitely has some evil in him."

Here's what else we learned:

"The cork will be pulled on the whole basement thing," boss Kevin Williamson teases. "Before the first season is over."

"Vicki is definitely dead and won't be coming back," Kevin said when a reporter asked why Kayla Ewell (Vicki) said she wasn't really dead.

The IMDB synopsis that says Elena will become a vampire in the next episode "is completely false," boss Julie Plec said. "That happens in the books but it won't happen on this show til like season 37."Yay! You mean we get 37 seasons? You better get your non-aging, vampalicious cast some face cream, stat.

Damon and Elena are on! The road, anyway. As I teased a few weeks back, the unlikely pair will be taking a road trip (against her will) and it will lead to the blossoming of the full-fledged love triangle, with the first glimmers of a possible Damon and Elena pairing. "It's not a love triangle with only two people and," Nina says. "And now that the necklace is off, she's very vulnerable. In the next episodes we're going to see there's going to be a lot of Damon and Elena."

And one half the fanbase goes whoooooo.

The other half of you? Fear not, cause I have more scoop to spill on Julie's thoughts on the show's "one true love," which I will post once my gag order is up--OK, in reality there isn't a gag order but I haven't transcribed it yet and want to go share a few more "Vampire Bloody Marys" with the TVD gang. (My exclusive interview was awesome, and I'm officially a Julie Plec fan, btw.)

What? It's work, people!

Should Elena be with Stefan or Damon? Fight the good fight below...

Keck's Exclusives: Elena and Katherine To Face-Off on Vampire Diaries

Jun 22, 2010 08:10 AM ET
by William Keck

Nina Dobrev, Vampire Diaries

Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie and The Patty Duke Show all did it way back in the '60s, and next season on The Vampire Diaries, Nina Dobrev's Elena will make her onscreen debut on the same screen with Nina Dobrev's Katherine, who made her dramatic return to Mystic Falls posing as Elena in May's season finale.

Want more Vampire Diaries scoop? Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine.

"I can't talk much about it yet," says executive producer Julie Plec, "but one of the big surprises is that Katherine comes face to face with Elena."

How does Nina feel about playing both Elena and her 19th century doppelgnger in the same scenes? "I will have to ask for a second pay check," kids the 21-year-old, who as a child marveled over Lindsay Lohan's dual performance in The Parent Trap. While special effects have advanced a thousandfold since Elizabeth Montgomery's Samantha/Serena face-offs on Bewitched, Nina is still worried about emoting opposite a stand-in tennis ball when the series resumes production in July. "It will be difficult because a lot of acting is reacting to the other person, but it'll be fun to step out of my comfort zone."

Nina's not the only one who'll be given a tough acting assignment. Having the look-alike ladies in the same town will also force Ian Somerhalder to play two different sides of Damon. "It's going to be an emotional rollercoaster for me," Ian predicts. "Damon, with Katherine, is this youthful wide-eyed fun guy who is so intrigued by her — so different from the maniacal, more mature Damon you see with Elena."

Oil in the Gulf: Ian Somerhalder says 'this disaster is the game changer'

By Carina MacKenzie

|

June 21, 2010 7:19 PM ET

When we spoke with "Vampire Diaries" and "Lost" star Ian Somerhalder in May for Zap2it's sister publication the Los Angeles Times, he was still reeling from the tragic news of the Deepwater Horizon's explosion and the subsequent oil leak into the Gulf of Mexico.

Today Somerhalder, who was raised in Covington, La., is horrified that the leak still hasn't been plugged and that up to 60,000 barrels of oil are still pouring into the Gulf every day.

"Never in a million years did I think that we'd be having this conversation two months later," he tells Zap2it. "You know when something bad happens in your life, or something goes wrong -- that weird kind of really uneasy feeling you have in the pit of your stomach? I've had that for two months."

Somerhalder returns to work on "The Vampire Diaries" on July 13, but he's devoted his time off this summer to tireless work in the Gulf region. Tonight (June 21), Somerhalder will be participating in Larry King's special two-hour telethon "Disaster in the Gulf: How You Can Help" on CNN at 8 p.m. EST.

Joining Somerhalder are Justin Bieber, Sting, Pete Wentz, Chelsea Handler, Cameron Diaz, Alyssa Milano, and many more celebrities devoted to the cause.

Stars will talk to Larry King and participate in telephone banks to take viewers' calls, and Ryan Seacrest will be hosting an online Social Suite for celebs to touch base with fans on Facebook and Twitter. Use the hashtag #CNNHelpGulf to participate.

"I've been working in Grand Isle, which is sort of Ground Zero right now," Ian says. "Basically, the entire area is shut down. Everyone from the waitress who serves you breakfast to the guy who owns the charter boat to the shrimpers - they all literally rely on the ocean to keep their industry going. They're shaking in their boots right now, because their industry is dead. Think about how frightening it is when you suddenly, though no fault of your own, can't feed your children or pay your mortgage."

He continues, "All of this happened due to human error - the error is cutting corners, saving money at the expense of safety measures, and a nonexistent regulatory commission. The [U.S. Minerals Management Service] gets royalties from the oil industry. How is that any kind of regulatory body?"

Somerhalder strongly believes that the horrific impact of B.P.'s oil leak will change the way our nation operates, from an individual level to the federal government. "It's time to change, and I think this disaster is the game changer. It feels like this is one of those catastrophic events that truly changes the way that we think."

For information about how you can help, watch CNN June 21st at 8 p.m. EST and check out United Way, the National Wildlife Federation, and the Nature Conservancy. Keep an eye on Zap2it for much more from our interview with Ian Somerhalder and other CW stars working in the Gulf Region.

Call 1-800-491-GULF between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. EST on June 21st to speak with your favorite celebrities and, more importantly, to donate and help the dire situation on the Gulf Coast.

Ahead on The Vampire Diaries: Elena vs. Katherine!

Posted on June 22nd, 2010 9:43 AM by M.L. House
Show: The Vampire Diaries, Tag: Spoilers

The major cliffhanger on which The Vampire Diaries concluded its perfect first season will play a major role on season two, producer Julie Plec says.

Referring to the shock of Katherine arriving in Mystic Falls, Plec told TV Guide Magazine this week that "one of the big surprises [on season two] is that Katherine comes face to face with Elena."

This will be interesting for Nina Dobrev, of course, who joked about asking for two paychecks next year and talked about the challenge in playing dual roles in one scene: "It will be difficult because a lot of acting is reacting to the other person, but it'll be fun to step out of my comfort zone."

The CW has not yet released a season premiere date for The Vampire Diaries, but one thing is for certain: it can't arrive soon enough!

Discuss the show now, and all summer long, in our TV Fanatic forum.

Love,
~Jot~

Ian Somerhalder plans to turn 'Vampire Diaries' set green with new mobile power company

By Carina MacKenzie

|

June 26, 2010 5:11 PM ET

Ian Somerhalder, star of "The Vampire Diaries" and "Lost," is continuing to be proactive in the fight for a greener future. Somerhalder, who spent his childhood on the Gulf Coast, has been devastated by the Gulf Oil Disaster.

As an estimated 60,000 barrels of oil continue to gush into the Gulf of Mexico every day, Somerhalder is looking toward preventing future catastrophes. "I understand the need for energy," he tells Zap2it. "I couldn't say that loud enough, scream it loud enough if I tried. We all are culprits. As we speak, I'm driving, using fuel. The key is that we need to start moving toward green energy."

To do his part, Somerhalder has joined forces with Go Green Mobile Power. "You're the first person I'm telling this," he shares. "I just became involved with a very strong green energy company that produces portable, mobile green power. The company's called Go Green Mobile Power. Our first prototype is going to be done in a few days."

Go Green Mobile Power will create portable solar/wind/biodiesel generators for use in the film and event industry (as well as other arenas), to replace the off-grid dirty energy that's traditionally used on location.

"It takes a lot of power to run a movie set. We go through a lot of fuel," Somerhalder says. "It's harmful, and we can start changing that a little bit. We can get rid of these noisy, stinky, disgusting gas generators. There's going to be a lot of thought that goes into this revolution that's going to happen."

"We're dealing with California Transportation Department, we're dealing with the Department of Defense, we're dealing with disaster relief -- but we're also dealing with the entertainment industry. We'll be taking major productions green, like big concerts and music festivals. Greening the 'Vampire Diaries' set is a priority for me, which we're going to be doing this year."

Somerhalder is working to be part of the solution, but that doesn't mean he's not still furious at the people who are neglecting the problem. "Tony Hayward is literally basking on his yacht right now, in Europe, while these people suffer and all the animals die," he says. "In this country if you throw your trash in someone else's trash facility, I don't think it's a felony, but you can get in a lot of trouble. Yet a foreign company - now, mind you, it's owned by a lot of Americans, but it's a foreign company - can come into our waters, destroy an entire ecosystem, and the C.E.O. has the brass balls to be caught in public basking in the sun."

He sighs. "I hope this isn't in vain. I'm not being negative anymore, and I'm tired of feeling angry. I'm going to make this into a positive. Hopefully, this makes us think of the future."

Read more from Ian Somerhalder and find out how you can help victims of the Gulf Oil Disaster.

AND

Question: I heard a rumor that David Anders will be a regular next season on The Vampire Diaries. Please tell me that it's true! —Addison

I would if I could, but I can't. But here's something I can confirm: Anders will definitely be in the season premiere.

SPOILERS. Kind Of. David Anders
EW
Though in last month's Vampire Diaries cliffhanger Elena's doppelganger brutally attacked his portrayer, David Anders (John) confirms that he'll be back for the season premiere. And beyond that?

"That's up in the air right now," he says. "They haven't picked up [my] option yet. I feel like the character has a lot of legs and you can go in many different directions with him. But ultimately it's [executive producer] Kevin Williamson's choice."

Although on paper the odds of John surviving would appear slim — the dude got his fingers chopped off and took a blade to the gut — Anders reminds fans, "People don't always die from knife wounds."

As he awaits word on his VD prognosis, the Alias grad is currently shooting a guest appearance as a fugitive from the past on the second season of Syfy's Warehouse 13 (premiering July 6; Anders' ep airs Sept. 7). "There's time travel involved," he explains. "I run a magazine back in the '60s. It's shrouded in secrecy, so that's about all I can tell you."

Q: Are there a lot of script changes in The Vampire Diaries?
M: Lots of revision. We get ideas about the main story. Script's totally different. Gotta roll with it. Changes from day to day.

Q: Is there a lot more Tyler in season 2?
M: Yes. Lockwood takeover

Q: If you could play anyone else in (The Vampire Diaries) the series besides Tyler who would you play and why?
M: Damon. I went for the role of Damon (was told I wasn't pretty enough), I went for the role of Stefan (I was not "nice" enough).

Q: Does Tyler have a new love interest in season 2?
M: Yes. That's all I can say.
