Twinkle was standing in line, waiting for her turn to place an order. For now she was checking her phone to see if her mother had replied back to let her know if she had wanted anything. It was around then that she felt a hand snake around her waist and twirl her around.
She had let out a yelp as she made a full circle, but then landed on her feet with a full laughter as she she knew there was only person who had the audacity to pick her up like this in public. The one man that she had given the full authority and permission to do so.
Kunj.
Turning around, she focused on only him, not even caring about the other pairs of eyes that were glued onto them. She didn't even care about the disgusted looks that the narrow-minded aunties were giving to her. Chances are they were glad to finally have gotten a reason to be distracted from their "out-of-hand" daughters.
All Twinkle cared about was the way Kunj was looking at her. The way he had placed his hands on her waist gently to let his presence known, but also firmly so that everyone else knew only he could be so near to her. The way his eyelids refused to shut for a second for they would lose another second of looking at her. The small smile that crept up on his lips, making her break into a grin. Just feeling the warmth emanating from him, filled Twinkle's heart.
"What are you doing here?" She asked grinning at him, but still unable to bring the required teasing tone to her voice as she was still so lost in his gaze.
"Jahan tum, wahan mein." He said with a tilt of his head.
Twinkle looked down and blushed, joining their foreheads together.
"Did you make your order?" He asked, shifting slightly towards the cash registers.
Twinkle shook her head.
"Well, go and then I'll drop you home."
Twinkle shook her head in affirmation, smiling at him.
"Do you want something?" Twinkle asked, breaking out of his embrace and walking towards the register.
"One large coffee." He said.
"Two creams, one sugar?" Twinkle asked rhetorically, knowing full well how he takes it.
"You know it." He said laughingly.
Walking towards the car with the paper bag containing food in her hands, Twinkle chattered away about her day's events.
Kunj opened the door for her which Twinkle greatly appreciated. As she sat inside, she watched as he put the long end of her pink dress into the car as well. Putting on her seat belt, Twinkle thought about how it was the little things about Kunj that made her love him so much. Things like him holding the door open for her, asking her how his mom is, dropping her home from college when it becomes too dark outside, making sure she has small snacks with her at all times in case she gets hungry etc.
Kunj got inside the car, and put his large coffee cup in the cup holder. Putting his seat belt on, he started the car and they went off.
As she munched on the red grapes that he had brought for her, Twinkle thought about their relationship. She hadn't told her mom about him yet. There wasn't a particular reason as to why, she simply didn't. Kunj had become such an easy fit into her life that she at times felt like he has been there with her since birth. She has shared nearly everything about her life with him; from her childhood mischief to her cat fights to her stress eating to her fear of public speaking. Of course there were things that she kept to herself. She didn't want to run out of things to say to him one day. But with each new day, she keeps finding something to share with him. It could be something trivial as a new song release or a topic as serious as the cruel treatment towards the stray animals roaming around on the streets.
"Do you mind up turning up the volume?" Kunj asked.
"Hmm?" Twinkle answered, still breaking out of her reverie.
She looked at him and saw his black shades shielding his face as the wind ruffled through his hair. The setting sun behind created a halo around him, bathing him in an ethereal light.
Kunj tapped the side of her temple, looking at her.
"Turn up the volume." Twinkle chuckled and swatted his face so that he was looking back at the road.
"Let it be. It wasn't anything that important." Twinkle said leaning back into the seat.
"Meaning you were thinking about me." Kunj stated.
"No!" Twinkle retorted, not wanting to admit to it.
"Liar."
"Am not!"
"Are too!" Keeping his eyes on the road, he pulled at her cheek.
"Kunj!" Twinkle whined, swatting his hand away.
"Then tell me, na. Kya soch ri ho?" Keeping one hand on the steering wheel, he held her right hand with his left.
Twinkle shifted in her seat slightly so that she could look at him better.
Taking a deep sigh, she said, "Yehi ki meine ab tak tumhare baare mein Maa ko kyun ni bataya." She felt Kunj tense up underneath her touch. The little spasms in his jaw told her that he wished to say something, but just didn't know how to begin. "I mean, it's not like you're a bad guy. You're a good guy, a really, really good guy. There's no reason for me to hide you from her."
Kunj tilted his head a little and opened his mouth, taking in a deep breath.
"Twinkle..." He began, uncertain of where this was conversation was going to leave their relationship. "I know that you have no problem and I have no problem but... everyone else..."
"But what do we care about the society. We didn't do anything wrong. You haven't even touched me in a way that was against my will. Kunj, you're one of the most..." Twinkle paused as she searched for the right word that would encapsulate him. "Purest human beings that I know." She raked her hand through his soft hair, a right that only she has gained from him. "And I know for a fact that Mom would be more than delighted to know that I have found such a great guy for myself."
"Woh toh hai," He indulged cheekily with a shake to his head.
Twinkle giggled, ruffling his hair.
"Toh aaj raat ka dinner humhare saath kar na." Twinkle offered, the prospect of Kunj meeting her mom making her excited.
"Aaj..." Kunj trailed off. "I don't think so. I mean, I'm not prepared for it and mein aunty se kahun ga kya?"
"Mein kaunsa tumhara rishta lekar jaa ri hoon. Sirf milne ke liye hi toh keh ri hoon." Twinkle pouted, holding his hand with both of hers.
"Kyunki rishta toh mein lekar aaonga." Kunj replied, tapping her forehead with his.
Blushing, but with a grand smile, she answered, "Oyye hoyye. Kab aare ho?"
Parking the car in front of Twinkle's house, Kunj said, "Tum kaho toh abhi le aaon?"
"Chal haath." She swatted him on his arm. "You don't have the guts to meet my mom formally and you're going to bring a rishta for me? Jaa jaa, pehnk maat." Twinkle had taken off her seat belt and opened the door when Kunj pulled her back.
"Eehh, pehnk ni raa hoon. Sach keh ra hoon." With a seriousness and a deep passion that stirred Twinkle, Kunj spoke. "Jab mein tumhari Mom se milunga woh mujh par aise fida ho jayengi ki voh kudh apne haathon se tumhara rishta lekar aayengi."
"Oh really?" Twinkle chuckled, highly amused.
"Really." He replied, giving her an Eskimo kiss.
"Kab lekar aao ge?" Twinkle asked, the softness in her eyes depicting the new dreams she was weaving for herself.
"Whenever you're ready." He touched his forehead with hers, and looked down, blushing himself.
They sat in silence for a while, basking in the warmth of the setting sun and the impending future that lay ahead of them.
