saku when reading this one I get the feel of a Sherlock Holmes novel.. I'm a great fan of him.. I love detective stories so much.. I don't know why I get the same feel here.. when our hero go to meet shomi in the market I was thinking that it was Holmes. . and shomi as a women in her early 40 's living in baker Street. . saw our case starts.. shomi here I guess a helpless mother. . who wants her daughter back .. and next update will be the entry of our heroine and hero heroine meeting. . so our new Arther konen doel is miss sakura.. thank you so much for giving a story like this..

I just love this...swara's father is so cruel...poor shomi...why doesnt swara wanna talk...how will her first meeting with sk go...lots of qns...plz update soon

But in meantime, wanna say I'm just loving the first person narrative flow. 👏

Very nice chapter, Saku. I find that in mystery novels, chapters like this one set the pace for what comes later, the intrigue, the clues, the enumeration and examination of suspects and witnesses, the unraveling of the plot. The beginning chapters set the tone, the frame really, within which the portrait then emerges.

And I liked this chapter a lot from that standpoint--all the more so, since being written in the first person, the reader kind of got a glimpse into the way SK's mind ticks.

The way you have described Swara not wanting her mother to talk to the lawyer, almost resigned to accepting her fate, coolly accepting the blame for a crime she didn't commit; reminded me of a fantastic side plot in the Agatha Christie Novel "Towards Zero".

There's a side plot there which has a very profound study of why people sometimes confess to crimes they haven't committed. If you haven't read this book yet, I heartily recommend you do so.

And I can imagine SK meditatively saying one of my favorite quotes from that book (which I referred in my Old Sins Cast Long Shadows TS as well):

""When you read the account of a murder - or, say, a fiction story based on murder - you usually begin with the murder itself. That's all wrong. The murder begins a long time beforehand. A murder is the culmination of a lot of different circumstances, all converging at a given moment at a given point. [...] The murder itself is the end of the story. It's Zero Hour.""

I am gleefully rubbing my hands now, imagining SK applying his formidable mind to cracking the circumstances that resulted in the crime itself! 😛

Liked the deft asides you have given us about the characters of Shekar and Shomi. Shekar is a spineless, brain dead waste of space as usual, a poor excuse for a father. He doesn't seem to care that his daughter could be facing the death penalty or life in prison.

And Shomi, well, she does love her daughter, and wants what is best for her. But she has buried that hope deep since it appears she doesn't want to rock the boat with her husband. She's not as strong as the Shomi in the serial? Or is that a fake thread in the initial chapters which you are going to change with a sleight of hand later? 😉

BTW, I am a huge fan of the Erle Stanley Gardener novels, so I am imagining SK as having the smarts and the daring of Perry Mason; Vic being the efficient investigator & sidekick like Paul Drake. Swara has to fill the slot of Della Street, though she's the defendant here and not SK's girl friday/ secretary. 😊 Maybe she will become that after he exonerates her, for future adventures!!
