Avan, Aval Adhu 260
May we never hate each other. The Katha Upanishad
Youth and beauty vanish, life and wealth vanish, name and fame vanish, and even the mountains crumble into dust. Friendship and love vanish. Truth alone abides.
'The first bow that I tried to make broke into two pieces the moment I tried flexing it. The same thing happened several times before I realized that dry twigs and limbs cast away by the trees did not make for a good bow. It took me a long time before I perfected my bow-making skills ' Ravi said and smiling looked at Gayatri and continued, 'I was not alone in doing that for almost all boys born in this ancient land went about fashioning crude versions of bows and arrows and happily enacting characters from our great epics. But, when it comes to the bow and arrow almost all kids will utter two names, " Lord Ram and Arjun " for they remain famous to this day even after having first appeared thousands of years ago.'
There is no proper and solid proof that a person like Lord Ram ever existed and it is the same with Jesus Christ and maybe with several other mythical and spiritual leaders. Yet, today, 2.4 billion people are Christians, 1.9 billion people are Muslims and 1.2 billion people are Hindus. Why, is that? '
He looked up and looked into all their eyes and saw that they were glued to his every word and movement and smiling slightly said, ' Faith, Belief and Devotion like Love cannot be seen, heard or felt by one's physical self and can only be experienced in their souls. When I was young, I went about making bows and arrows imagining myself as a great warrior and archer and then after hearing the speech of Variyar swami in Madurai, I realized that true strength and great willpower came not from the physical body but from the abstract and unseen mind. It was through the stories about Lord Ram and Hanuman that I learnt about the majestic and eternal power that comes from truth, honesty, faith and complete devotion.
We regularly go to a temple to worship and pray to God knowing fully well that the stone will not speak or move and yet almost all of us Hindus do the same from birth to death. If it is not possible to go to a temple, then we stand in front of a photo or just a paper calendar and carry on with God. Why is that? Belief, faith and devotion in a higher power and that it exists in some form or another.'
He looked at Gayatri, ' your first question was about the death of Vali and my thoughts about it and if I thought Lord Rama was justified in killing Vali, the monkey king and that too by shooting an arrow into his chest from hiding behind a tree? and my answer is yes.'
Partha looked eagerly at Gayatri expecting a reaction but was left feeling confused and disappointed seeing no reaction from her and instead saw a ghost cast ghostly shadows in her eyes.
Not knowing what to do or say, he looked at Daksha who took up the reins and confronted Ravi, ' How can you justify that act? How can anyone justify killing someone from behind that simply means murder? Plain, cold-blooded murder that is tantamount to an execution of a person without even giving him or her a chance to state their case.'
Partha looked triumphantly at Ravi and thought, ' finally, our man has been cornered and that too by his own words.'
Ravi's voice was clear in its baritone and betrayed no doubts if any as he spoke his mind, 'Lord Ram in my humble opinion was right in killing Vali and I can prove it using two laws. One laid down by man and the other laid down by this universe for all eternity.'
Taking a deep breath and exhaling it slowly, Ravi looked at Gayatri pointedly for a long moment and then at Daksha and finally stopped at Partha and asked, ' what will you do if your wife has been kidnapped by someone who is much stronger than you and has been raping her for a long time? what will you do when you have tried to do your best and fight but were brutally beaten up, insulted and left to die? '
Partha without even realizing that he was the one who was doing the talking, growled and roared his reply to Ravi.
' I would kill that person who even dared to think of my wife. But if he did hurt her, then I will do whatever it takes to kill him and I will chop up his body and feed the pieces to the crows.'
Ravi smiled and looked at Daksha who nodded, ' My answer is the same as Partha's, master.'
' This is exactly what Lord Ram did to Vali who after having beaten up Sugriva, his own brother, then proceeded to take his sister-in-law Ruma for his own and placed her in his own quarters. He did this knowing full well that what he was doing was a grave sin and an act of pure evil. Even if there was bad blood between Vali and his younger brother Sugriva, there was no need for him to show his anger and hatred on a woman and that too who he knew very well was his own sister-in-law.'
' Enough. I have heard enough. Please, stop ' Gayatri's voice pleaded and Ravi stopped and looked at her and asked, ' Why do you want me to stop when I have not finished answering your questions?'.
Daksha who had no clue as to what was going on between Ravi and Gayatri, said, ' Sorry Gayatri but I want Ravi to finish what he has to say. This is a very important question for which every Tom, Dick and Harry has an opinion and I myself have heard many arguments about this part in Ramayana. So, let Master sir finish saying his opinion on this issue.'
Partha joined her and said, ' Gayatri, let Ravi say speak his mind for it is not only him that is doing the talking but a master and a bloody intelligent one at that.'
Ravi shrugged his shoulders and shaking his head said, ' I don't know and will never understand why people make such a fuss about this killing?'
Daksha's voice changed in tone as she asked angrily, ' Ravi, if the arrow that killed Vali had been launched by Sugriva instead of Lord Ram, it would make sense to me and probably to others for then it would be seen as revenge for what Vali did to his wife Ruma. But, who gave Ram the authority to do the killing?'
Ravi looked at Partha even though the question had been asked by Daksha and asked him if he had any answer to his wife's question.
Partha hurriedly shook his head and looked at Daksha who was glaring at him and whispered, ' Better you than me, boss. This is between you and the ladies.'
Ravi could not help but smile and say, ' Brutus ' and proceeded to answer Daksha.
' Ducks, you have forgotten two important aspects of who Lord Ram really was when he killed Vali.'
' Oh! What are those important aspects?'
' He was the head of Kosala Kingdom and the kingdom of Kishkinda fell under his purview and even Vali admits this as he lays dying. Even if Lord Ram was in exile, his brother Baratha took his slippers as a symbol with which to rule the kingdom until his return and coronation. So, Lord Ram as a king and as a prince of the Kosala Kingdom had the moral and judicial authority to question, judge and in the end, deliver punishment on all those who lived under his kingdom's rule.
Then you have the most important fact in this story which states that Lord Ram is an avatar of Lord Vishnu himself and had come down to earth for a specific reason which was to kill Raavan.'
He looked at Daksha, ' All those who believe in Jesus know that he was the son of God and that he willingly let himself be crucified and suffer a horrible death for the sole reason of saving humanity from their sins and also to prove to humans that God and faith are the only ways for eternal peace.'
Returning his gaze to Gayatri, ' All the great epics from all over the world speak about Two virtues and they are Dharma and truth. When you weigh them and measure them against any sin, they will always win out.
I want to end this first question by saying that there is no greater sin than molesting a woman and that too who is another's wife and against her own wishes. This is what was proved by killing Vali and Lord Ram does the same thing by Killing the demon king Ravan for kidnapping Sita, his own wife.'
His voice changed tone as it became serious when he said, ' Your first question was about the actions of God and I have been very clear as to what my thoughts are about it. But, your second question rather, the riddle titled " Ek Nai Paheli " is a more complicated one and I fear I might not have any clear-cut answers about it.'
Daksha feeling confused asked, ' Why Ravi? what is so confusing about this riddle which is in fact just a movie and a remake at that?'
Partha took it upon himself to answer the question that his wife had asked for his best friend and he did so in a grim voice.
' Because the movie plot concerns four people. Father and son and mother and daughter.'
Daksha looked at him curiously and asked incredulously, ' So what?'
' So what? ' Partha repeated her words and looked at her in disbelief, ' Baby, that movie is about a father falling in love with a younger woman the daughter while his son falls in love with the younger woman's mother.'
' WTF! OMG! How did I miss this film? Wow! You mean to say that director K.Balachandar actually made this film?'
Partha nodded and said, ' Yes. Ek Nai Paheli means a new riddle and it was a remake of the film Aboorva Raagangal which itself means " Rare melodies " although in my opinion it should be called a strange melody.'
Daksha stared openmouthed at Partha and gasped ' But how did he have the guts to make such a controversial film and that too way back in 1975? What happens in the end? Do they marry each other?'
Gayatri's voice felt like a sharp knife slicing through soft cloth as it cut through the darkness and went for Ravi's soul.
' Master. You have to answer this question for your answer will answer many other questions that I have in my mind.'
