The famous philosopher Aristotle was the first to assign humans with five traditional senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell. However, if he categorized animal senses today, the list would have been longer. Several animals possess additional perceptive abilities that allow them to experience the world in ways we can barely imagine.
Pigeons have a sixth sense called magnetoreception. Many migratory animals, from salmon to sea turtles, have a unique ability to detect Earth's magnetic field that they utilize like a compass to navigate great distances.
Dolphins have an incredible sixth sense called echolocation. Because sound travels better in water than in air, dolphins create a three-dimensional visual representation of their surroundings based entirely on sound waves, much like a sonar device. Sound waves reflected back to the emitter allow an object to be located. This serves to orient an animal, hunt prey, avoid obstacles, and interact socially.
Electroreception is the remarkable ability of sharks and rays to detect electrical fields in their surroundings. Jelly-filled tubes called ampullary of Lorenzini house this sixth sense.
Salmon, as do other fish, have magnetoreception, or the ability to sense the Earth's magnetic field as their sixth sense. Salmon notably find their way back to spawn in the same rivers from which they were born, despite travelling great distances in the open ocean during their adult life. How do they do it? It is still mostly a mystery to science.
Bats have a trifecta of sixth senses, or perhaps a sixth, seventh, and eighth sense: echolocation, geomagnetic, and polarization.
What do we humans have by way of extra senses and how do we use it?
Answer. Humans use it mostly to cheat other humans.
Yes, we humans do have an extra sense that is called the sixth sense and if you are familiar with Tamil films, you would have heard about the " Ezham Arivu " which actually turned out to be an Ezharai Sani for all those concerned with that film. But that went on for Director Murugadoss whose Spyder otherwise known as a colossal flop turned his Ezharai into an eternal sani. Sad.
Long ago, before our human species decided to start banding together in small villages and much before they decided to drop anchor and grow roots in one place and start growing their own food, we were hunter-gatherers and nomadic people. Our ancestors moved in small groups hunting and scavenging for food and it must have been a pretty difficult and harrowing time for them.
Why? because unlike the other species around them, our human ancestors were vulnerable to predators and the land was full of them. Forget the lions and tigers and other carnivores that inhabited their ambience and imagine their situation where they were in danger from even those so-called Prey animals.
Prey, how is that? Getting trampled by an elephant will change your mind and make you open to my mind and my thoughts. Getting gored by a large deer or a wild buffalo will surely add to your changing mind. Wait, getting a horn up front in your tummy or back and right in your bum and both delivered with tonnes of force vis a vis a Rhinocerous will surely change your opinion about prey animals.
So, Predators had fangs and claws and prey had fast wheels to flee from their predators and horns and hoofs. Both dangerous. One will eat you while you are alive and the other will trample you while you are. Maybe not if the well-placed hoof is well placed on your head. Boom.
Ever since Primates came down from the relative safety of the trees and began walking upright on two legs, one branch of that primate species was left vulnerable for a long time. The other branches of the primates became big and powerful like the Gorillas and Orangutans and could defend themselves and a few of them still retained their tree climbing and branch swinging skills like the chimpanzees and baboons.
Sadly, no Tarzan to be found anywhere and even if he or she was there is no evidence of such a human being present but in comics.
Eventually and tragically, Mother Nature decided to make the brains of our ancient ancestors a bit larger and with that come higher intelligence and today that very intelligence has placed the entire planet on the verge of destruction and extinction.
Bigger brains meant higher intelligence and thinking powers and with that came planning and preplanning and suddenly we were promoted to the top of the food chain. We killed for food and hunted and killed for sport and pleasure.
I will restrict myself to those instincts that our ancestors must have honed and depended on and that eventually became a sixth sense and a super instinct and an intuition.
To better understand what I am talking about all one has to do is compare our basic five senses with that of humans who still live in the forest and are classified as tribals. Suffice it to say that the tribals see, hear, smell and sense better than us and they do all that and more when in the forest. Some of the tribals have honed their instincts and senses to such a level that they have transformed themselves into near super beings.

' Sorry da, Ravi. But what do you mean, seeing but not seeing? How can one see without seeing?'
' By sensing, Partha. That last man was the only one who kept looking in all directions and then kept glancing in our direction and he did that several times.'
Partha could not make any sense of what Ravi was talking about and looked at Daksha and Gayatri who shrugged their shoulders and shook their heads.
' Same kind of night with that exact same kind of fog that even tastes the same and feels the same on my skin and now this sixth man. The wheel of time has indeed rotated and circled back to where it all started. Good. There is a chance that I might be able to find out the answer to the question that has been haunting all of us for 25 years and has remained unanswered. I always had a kind of inkling about what happened that fateful night and maybe if I am lucky I might just get the answers that I have been searching for.'
Gayatri was not one who circled around any situation or problem nor was she used to waiting patiently for the right time to ask the right question.
' All this by looking at a shadow that might have accidentally looked in our direction? Are you sure about all of this Ravi? For it kind of seems a bit vague and mysterious.'
If he felt hurt or offended by her words, it was not obvious in Ravi's answer.
' No, Gayatri. I am sure of what or who is out there and I am very sure now who sent them here ' he smiled and all three of them saw the relief and happiness in his face and eyes.
Partha who looked like he was just about ready to explode from all the frustration and anger that had been slowly gathering in his mind, asked angrily, ' Ravi, You know how much I love you and care for you and you know bloody well that I would sacrifice everything and my life too if you asked for it. But this is getting a bit scary and too much for me to handle. I am not worried about myself but I have Daksha to think of here and I am getting really worried and frankly, I am scared.'
Pointing out of the cottage, ' Not two and not three but six men and I fear the odds are just too much. Okay, Daksha has a gun but she has never fired it in anger and not against a living being or even an animal. Her practice has been in the firing range and at cardboard targets.'
Gasping in fear, ' If we, us civilians have a gun, imagine what these thugs and killers will be carrying and what if all of them are carrying guns and are pretty good at it.'
' Ravi, what Partha is saying makes complete sense. Let's retreat and get away from this place before it is too late.'
' I am sorry Daksha but I think that we might not be safe even if we do go down and hide inside the wailing rocks.'
Partha looked at him with panic, ' Why?'

' Ravi, this is not funny anymore. You are really creeping us out here' Daksha chided him gently and he looked at her and then looked at Partha and Daksha, ' Too long a story to be telling right now for we have only a little time left before they come searching for us and reach this cottage. After that, it won't be long before they track us down into the wailing rocks and the caves that we will be hiding in.'
' But, we have no other choice left here. It's either run now and do our best to hide and bide our time or make a stand right here and take the fight to them' Partha snarled angrily and Ravi nodded and returned his eyes to the darkness outside.
Gayatri who had been watching Ravi closely was astounded by the way he was behaving and she unloaded her anger on him. ' I don't get you, Ravi ' and pointing to Partha and Daksha, ' they are your closest friends and right now their lives might be in danger and yet here you are, standing nonchalantly and as it appears to me that you don't care about them at all.'
' You are wrong Gayatri for it is not them or I that is in danger. It is you that are in danger from these people. But, not for long ' he ended cryptically leaving all of them to wonder why he had used the words " not for long " and knowing him very well they knew that he never wasted words. Never.
' Okay, first things first. If my assumption about that sixth man is correct then that means he has indeed been sent by Meenakshi and if that is true then it means that Gayatri is the one who is in danger and maybe for two reasons.'
Daksha looked at him curiously, ' Two reasons. Why do you say two when we know that the only reason Gayatri is in danger right now is because of the way Meenakshi still feels about you? What other reason could she have to send so many people to harm Gayatri?'
' The attempted theft in the Sadaya Perumal temple. Have you forgotten about that?' Ravi reminded her and all of them went ' Whaaat' in sync and in shock.
' Okay, Mr Einstien. Enough of your mind games ' Partha growled angrily.
Ravi Kumar looked at them with tired and defeated eyes, ' Being the Headmaster of a Government school I happen to interact a lot with high-ranking officials from the education department and my path often crosses that of the Madurai Collectorate. It was there that I heard that a gang from North India had been operating for a few years now and that many temples had reported thefts from their temples. Most of the cases were hushed up fearing an uproar from the public. But the Police department has been investigating the cases diligently. Yet..'
Partha waved his hand sarcastically and finished what Ravi had left unsaid. ' Yet, the cops have found nothing. Is that what you were about to say?'
Daksha smiled, ' Cops, thefts, priceless temple antiques that must be worth crores. Do the math, Ravi? It's obvious why the cops have found nothing because they are getting a big cut from the thieves themselves.'
' No, Daksha. You are wrong in saying that. Please don't say that for I know better. Trust me, for every single bad cop there are dozens of good cops willing to do their duty and do it by following the letter of the law. It is not the police department but rich and powerful people who are behind these temple thefts. Add rich and powerful and you get politicians and people belonging to the ruling party.'
' Ravi, your uncle, Mr Dharmalinga Thevar is also a politician but I am willing to bet my last rupee on him and say that he is a kind and honest person and would not stand by quietly if he knows something like this is happening around him.'
Ravi looked at Gayatri, ' Absolutely. Then again what if he does not know about it and what if it is someone close to him or to his family who is involved in these crimes.'
' You mean, Meenakshi?' Partha exclaimed in horror and Daksha joined in, ' why does that not surprise me?'
' Wrong again, Ducks. I know Meenakshi very well and I can guarantee you that she will never stoop to these levels. She is mad and a bit of a psycho but she is not a dishonest person and will never stoop to these levels of stealing from the Gods.'
Partha looked at him, ' Then who else could it be?'
' That is one of the questions I am hoping to get an answer for among the other questions I will be asking our guests out there.'
' Out there? What do you mean out there?' Gayatri asked and glanced out into the darkness, ' you mean you are planning to go out there?'
' Yes ' Ravi answered and Partha looked at him with surprise and confusion for the tone that his friend has used was new and that always meant trouble.
Gayatri pleaded with a soft voice, ' Are you mad? Have you lost your mind completely for only a madman would think of doing such a thing?'
' I am neither mad nor have I lost my mind. As a matter of fact, I kind of feel better knowing that there is a chance that I might finally get some answers to some questions that have been haunting me all these years.'

The wound caused by fire will heal, but a wound burnt by the fires of the tongue will never heal.
She grabbed his shirt with both her hands and shook him with great force and strength that only comes with great and unbridled emotion called Love. Then she opened her beautiful mouth and unleashed her anger through words like a fire-breathing dragon.
' In the end, you are nothing but a selfish man who thinks of only himself and what is important to him. Even now, in this moment of great danger, you are thinking only of what happened to you all those years ago. Even now, knowing fully well that it is your psycho cousin that has sent thugs to hurt me, you still have the audacity to talk positively about her and her so-called virtues.'
Her eyes were full of tears, and her heart was full of pain as she cursed him, ' You are a curse and any person who comes in contact with you will be cursed and their lives ruined forever. Maybe, it was good that Madhu left you and ran away for I cannot being to imagine how much she would have suffered if she had stayed with you.'
Wiping her tears, she spat her fury not knowing she was only unleashing her pain and frustration and said, ' Go on. Go and do what you so badly want to do. Maybe, you and Meenakshi really deserve each other for only a sick and demented person like her will be able to understand you for you are sick yourself.'
Ravi used his hands to gently remove Gayatri's hands that were holding his shirt and glanced at Partha and Daksha and said in a calm voice, ' Ten minutes. Give me ten minutes and if I don't return, then leave.'
He looked at Daksha, ' Don't worry Ducks. I know that when the moment comes, your hand will be steady and your aim will be true. It is never about the hands and it is always about your heart and your soul.'
Saying that Ravi walked out and disappeared from their view after taking just a few steps for the Fog had come back with a vengeance.
Good morning. I wish you a beautiful day.
Slipper discourses
I had purchased that pair of slippers with a specific purpose in mind, which was to use them only for temple purposes. So, when I asked the guy for a pair of slippers and also added my purpose, he displayed his purpose with intent and also feigned ignorance about my needs and more importantly the needs of the temple.
I looked at the casual slippers with all the leading brand names " Nike, Adidas, Reebok" and also some dubious brands that rang and rhymed with " Peter England and John England".
I exhaled my sigh and shook my head with understanding and with immense patience looked up at him " Am I the first customer, boniya?" and he replied, " yes sir".
I told him " from house to temple and nothing more, so give me something that is comfortable and affordable and which can be in stealth mode".
He frowned and I thought that for one second, my favourite comedian " Suruli Rajan" had come back alive and repeated, " Stealth mode saar, what it is meaning?"
With the same patience and love that Lord Krishna showed for Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra and explained to him about life that we now celebrate as the " Bhagwad Gita", I too explained to him about how we lose slippers outside temples, and then have to walk barefoot or drive the bike or car barefoot, fuming and cursing".
He opened his gob " Oh, ok, ok" and I walked out with a pair of dirty brown colour rubber slippers after paying just 120 rupees.
The dirty brown slippers stayed with me for nearly a year, all the time complaining that it was too plain and dull and that it was drowning in shame and depression over its own looks and that it had been avoided for nearly a year.
Yesterday, I came out of the temple and searched for my stealth mode, dirty brown slippers and after ten minutes realized that somebody indeed had stolen that pair of ugly duckling slippers.
I smiled, and beamed although my emotions were raging like my guru " Nadigar thilagam" and a regular stopped and enquired " Enna saar, seruppu pocha" and I nodded.
He continued " Unga peeda, sencha paavam ella antha serupoda pochu saar. From now on he has to carry all that burden".
He left and I kept staring at him as he receded and thought " Old slippers, only 120 when brand new and for that, the person who has stolen it has to carry all my sins. What nonsense it is my lord?" I asked the temple and all the gods inside it and a voice whispered " Fat chance Satish, somebody started that saying out of anger and vengeance and please, don't fall for that Nonsense talk."
I walked away wondering about the lifespan of my next pair of temple slippers and if I would be able to get the same dirty brown coloured ones
