She was born in canada, raised in the US... Got engaged to her cousin from Pakistan. After the guy came to the US... Her father settled him in a business erc...they got married and that was it... He locked her inside a room, she was not able to tslk to anyone...her dad started to get worried but it took him 8 months to figure out... One day he decided to visit them at their place and when he was talking to his son in law...my friend heard him (her dad)... She started screaming -and got saved...now sge is a doctor...remarried to a very nice man and has a son!!!!!! So dont think things dont happen in the US or canada...they do!!!!!

Regarding the bold: She was able to call the women's shelter, which is a number I figured is more difficult to find (if she did not have a phone directory or internet access) than the simple 911 emergency number.

I thought the water part was a little strange too. There are some areas of the US that don't have the best tasting tap water, but it's not unhealthy to drink either. All the water supply is clean and fluoridated. But it's possible that she did not know this at the time, seeing as how she had bigger problems to deal with.

Reading this post n comments, I was reminded of a show I watched recently. It was a study done to see of people if they could behave cruelly to a complete stranger.

They were made to sit in front of a machine wih diff voltages that was to be administered to a 'patient' if he gave the wrong answer to a series of question. Every Wrong answer meant that guy got electrocuted with a higher volt.

The participant is told that he/she can end this study anytime they wanted. The participant had a choice, not the person receiving the electric shocks.

The test starts of smoothly and after 2-3 ques, the answers start to get wrong. It comes to a point where the patient is begging not to be electrocuted anymore and the participant is told to continue and not stop by an authoritative official. The test here is to see hw assertive they are in the face of authority and just cause its a stranger, can they contine the cruel act of giving higher voltage shots to the patient.

Majority completed the whole test even though they were uncomfortable. Despite the fact they were expressly told that they can stop the test nytime, only 13% did that. Rest 87% went thru it when faced with an authoritative figure.

Even I thot I would be one of the 13% but then I had another thot, when faced with that pressure, would I be able to think rationally n logically?

Extreme situations makes even a basic logical thing diff to do. As for sticking something btwn the doors n going out, not nec she was staying in a residential part of the town or near a central area, getting somewhere might not be possible on foot or the nearest neighbor might be miles away. USA is a big country.

I was watching Komal's story again yesterday and a few points stuck me as vital.

1. The incident happened in the month of November, there was snow outside, tap water would've been frozen.
The apartment door keys were with her husband and since it was snowing outside Komal was afraid to step out of the house.

2. She was systematically starved by her husband so that her weight dropped from 55kgs to 36 kgs. She was also constantly beaten and given death threats. Her husband had tried to strangle her a number of times so that she was afraid for her life.

3. Her husband and in-laws had placed numerous demands earlier which had been met, and the last demand was that her parents transfer the house in which they were residing, which is when Komal refused to cooperate.

4. She was made to believe that her only support was from her husband and despite all torture she was completely dependent on him. She was kept locked in a room, so she had no idea on where to go even if she stepped out.

5. She had a working phone through which she was constantly calling up her husband and begging him to give her some food and water. It was only when she started losing consciousness that survival instincts kicked in and made her to ask for help.

We might crticize her for not thinking rationally or acting decisively but the last bit of resistance that she showed was probably the only bit of strength she had left in her. She had been weakened physically, emotionally and mentally so it is a wonder that she's alive today.

For people who say that the tapwater must have been frozen, have you lived in the US/Canada/UK when it was really cold?

I ask because I grew up in the US and have lived in extremely cold areas of the country (where we could get up to 2 feet of snow on average). But tap water was never frozen. Some days it was difficult to get hot water, but the water itself was never frozen and unattainable.

I know it's not a huge part of the discussion but I wanted to clear that up unless someone who lives in those countries actually has had such experience.

I don't want people to think that people who live in very cold areas have to go without water when it snows.

If you have vonage and 911 is not set up you cannot call 911. If there is a water shutoff out side or in the basement it can be shutoff and you will not have water in the tap. Some of the desert places like Arizona the water is not fresh water It is recycled water.

I've grown up in the US...and lived or visited 34 of the 50 states...and I have to say...the entire USA is not like New York City or LA...😆
If you live out in rural Oklahoma like I did for 3 years...you'd know what it means to store water to cook or flush the toilet with almost every other Friday...especially during tornado season. And electric cables fell during the winters leaving us without electricity...and seeing cows crossing the street was nothing unusual.
I've also lived on a native american reservation in South Dakota...we were told not to drink the water...it was that bad...In fact we had to have purified water delivered to us every week.
The water in Boston literally tastes fishy...
The water in the Maryland used to have 386 ppm on my TDS meter rating.
Its better in Chicago, where I now live...its 185 ppm..😆...needless to say I have a reverse osmosis system installed in my house and only drink filtered or bottled water.
That's not to say that if my life depended on it I wouldn't drink the tap water...heck I would have drunk water from the bathroom sink's tap...but I don't know how the water system was set up in Komal's house or what she was led to believe...Maybe she incorrectly referred to what ever her husband broke as the filter...so I'll give her the benefit of the doubt.
Also...she was obviously in an abusive situation...and new in the country...so she may not have been aware of all the facilities available to her...so again while my eyebrow was raised...I'll give her the benefit of the doubt.
In any case...this one person's story shouldn't detract us from the overall message that show was trying to drive home.

I think people are just going nowhere in this discussion. The husband might have purposely turned off the water from outside the house. I think the people who are talking regarding the availability of water in USA and other developed countries, If you need to torture anybody, there are so many ways to do that. The water can be stopped from outside the house, It may not have happened but who knows.

I completely agree with you. I live in scotland and it has been -15 degrees in 2010 but the tap water never froze. She could have had accesibility to water easily
