So once more; showing more on her is a very important cog that preserves the link to the original. That day when Saras was telling VC, " won't you remember Kaka? How she is holding this entire family under one roof? Her toils, her diligence?' And many here won't even know what was being referred. I feel like sharing, despite her being a non glamorous, elder character. Why, in any good story, side characters, specially well etched, always contribute hugely towards formation of a sound platform which holds the overall experience memorable. It needs not be only about leads. The whole fabric ought have been woven well perhaps, isn't it?l
Coming to Guniyal, as one of the favourite character of older generation ( my mom likes her most), She is correctly held in high esteem, if going as per original. Here in frenzy of 'Dukh baa/ dugba' she is vastly blotted out and then, that 'purist' in me, still lurking, does make an uneasy shift, besides...coming to her, she is not even an empty extension, in her story, its actually Kumud, who is better understood- how she is formed. Where she is coming from. That day, when Kumud was patiently tackling Saras's insecurity, it was Guniyal who has taken over as her mentor. There was not a trace of insecure, high pitched Dukh baa then. When I found her soothing then, I was also reminded of Guniyal. Today, Cvs have revealed something more of her. And today, more then leads, i was observing her...the way she eased out her agitation and make her go into a secured sleep...I wished, both Saras and Kumud to be more forthcoming with her than they were showed...but there is lot more to tell on her too- through Kumud...of course, not to be expected here much though.

Apart from the fact that Guniyal was a key character in the novel, any story, if it focuses solely on the leads, limits itself.
The richness that comes from unfolding each character and their life and story, is what adds depth to the story.

In a daily soap specially, too much reliance on the leads can be really detrimental, there must be parallel tracks, other strong characters we can relate to, and this also does justice to the actors who have been picked to play these parts
Alpana Buch is a talented actor, and having picked someone so good, she needs to be given scenes that justify her presence. Sidelining good actors only frustrates them.

There are so many characters who have been picked, yet they are all faces in the crowd, Kusum, Gyan, Chandrika, VCs father, wouldn't it better to have lesser characters , with a more significant presence?

i think arshi the episode was not that bad! agree with the rating, but logic ki vaat itni bhi nahin lagi..every girl wants a commitment so kumud is no different there, a mother always knows what is going on with her children, whether they tell her or not..a mother's concern was also natural..other than that i did not really notice anything much..the story did not quite move ahead, lets see what the next week's episodes have to offer!

Did you notice it was the first time Dobo complimented his sundari? Bahut pyaari lag rahi ho

Dobo is clueless, everything has to be explained to him!

Glad to see Gun in action today. SC has a talented ensemble cast. Every actor should get some screen time and have side tracks for their characters. Their talent will not be wasted, they will not be frustrated and leads will not burn out.

Sunny-Saras scenes were funny.

I wish Kumud has applied some haldi to Dikra too. Poor guy has stopped working and spends all his time looking for or at Kumud😛 willing to do anything to please her. He is such a bacha!! Propose kaise karo? Ab yeh bhi Kumud batayegi? Saav Dobo che! I do understand Kumud's POV. Ratnanagari ki shaan has to have a dhamakedaar, hatke love story.

Its Dikra who has totally lost it, chasing her around asking her to apply haldi on him!!😕 Dikra please do not turn into the leading man of desi soaps who sit around all day at home, occasionally stare at the laptop and spend the rest of the time romancing their lady love and heaven forbid, mutely watching his mom be nasty to his wife/ GF.

I am surprised to see there is still no remorse from Saras for leading on Radha. Radha has moved on but I have not😆 That whole thing was un-Dikra like.

Lets see how the tracks laid out this week will play out over the course of the next few weeks. I am curious to see Guman's next chaal and Dobochandra's proposal. Part of me is dreading it. I dont want to see a tamasha in front of everyone during Sejal's wedding.

...maybe the original plan was to have meaty stories for each character...at least SLB would have been sure what each character will be about...and then the trp issues forced them to focus more on the love track which had the biggest traction among audiences...and that's at least 2 out of the 4 months of the show...

what I am saying is that focus on leads was not intentional but maybe forced by the market...

...within the challenges and the limited 4 months run...solid and meaty tracks which will showcase full potential of the actors have been developed...
1) DB from sceptic to super mom (clearly for samud and now it looks like for kumari too) --> who has her own demons to battle.
2) LN from an insensitive arrogant 'proud to be rich' father to a more rooted, balanced and caring one --> who has been tricked majorly by guman.
3) Kumari from sidelines to saras kiddie sis full of life --> now a young woman in big trouble
4) VC father with a modern outlook at least towards his daughters

There have been attempts to develop other tracks too but these got halted because of the above..
1) I remember reading that Gyan's character was also going to be grey and to be developed ...remember during the gau mata track when khoti vaat wanted to set fire to herself...there was a scene when VC goes to take Gyan's advice...and Gyan says I dont earn so how can I have a say...and the portray of utter helplessness ...

that is one character I am keen to see get developed...he has a chip on his shoulder (since he cant contribute to business, wants to be singer but has no talent and is constantly ridiculed for his passion) and therefore some bit of resentment towards VC & entire family...yet he loves VC & family...then what is his story with his wife Chandrika?

2) Chandrika bhabhi...She puts up with her husband's ridicule...and loves Gyan ...what's her story? ... I think in the novel she is like Kumud's Sunny...I have always seen her playfully rag kumud on saras...right from the kite flying scenes to locking them up in the room to hide n seek to when saras declared the ehsaas thing to the day after the hug to the mehendi etc...so many times she's in the frame when kumud & saras are the focus...

maybe smrth can give a tiny bit about her context..

3) similarly yash went overnight from loving bro to a brat...and then nothing's happening ...

the story is rich, SLB has a plan...which maybe got all distorted due to trp mata...still I feel we need to give some more time till they steer the ship to stable waters...which I think they have almost done...

@ bold - this will always be challenging even for someone like SLB. CVs claim viewers prefer to watch the leads and romance. They oblige for TRPs, viewers want more of the same. Talented side actors feel frustrated and leave. Leads are over worked and exhausted, CVs struggle to find a balance and keep story interesting focusing on leads or use it as an excuse for their lack of creativity or laziness for not writing interesting tracks of other characters. Its a horrible, vicious cycle. Arshi and I experienced this recently with our previous show.

SC has a large ensemble cast, to accommodate everybody's track along with leads is another challenge esp with the sword of TRP hanging on their heads. They are handling a couple characters at a time, Dukhba and Kumari for now.

I too wonder about Chandrika and Gyan. And ofcourse about Kusum and Sunny😛

Hgg and Nandy,
Quick recount before I leave,
in original;
Gaan Chatur (the one crazy for music) and not 'gyan' as here, elder brother of VC. Wastrel. His full family along with all others, were freeloaders on VC- Gun as there was no ancestral property there. It was solely VC's household, which found prosperity after VC's elevation to prime ministership. Chandika (and not Chandrika) , as her name goes, quarrel some and jealous of Gun. (This character is swapped here for Sundar). Guniyal restores entire family to a meaningful life after she founds work for Gaan.
Now another swap is Chandrika here for Sundar in original. There, sundar was younger SIL of Gun, widowed and sheltered by Guniyal, As per name, beautiful, and Gaan (elder BIL) has some bad intentions on her...again Guniyal deftly resolved the crisis without outward fuss. Her humility and tact won her final respect from Gaan and Chandika both (in original).
Many times VC was not even aware of all these troubles, but Manchatur was. And he valued her most.

So many swaps in adaptions, and obviously these back stories are irrelevant in serial. But Guniyal's own growth, from child bride to VC's beloved young wife- her education (at home), etc. forms interesting and relevant backdrop.
Of course we won't like much detailing here...no one, least of all trp crowd wud like to see such digressions...but if they tackle Sataswati story in FB, then hope they show some in parallel.
So much for my resolve to cut down on original...MercuryG u r to be blamed.😆

Good Day to you all.😊

Thanks again smrth for the "original" information

While now we all know that the show will be different from the book, please do keep giving these gems as and where you feel relevant, it keeps us happy and adds to the enjoyment of the show.
If not for comparison, then just for that extra knowledge.

Gaan chatur is so much more relevant than Gyan chatur, and I guess chandika changed to Chandrika, because the very nature of the character changed , smart stroke from CVs , she is so sweet, can't imagine her with a name like Chnadika.

What was Khoti Kaki's husband's name? Is she playing the kind of role that Chnadika had ? I mean in temperament?

@ Infofan, hotdogg

From what I have observed of shows,

The supporting cast is utilized in two ways

The way they help the story of the leads to move forward

Guman, Kumari, Dugba, sunny, Guniyal - have been doing this
By providing a parallel track for additional variety and diversion

Presently the Dugba and husband track

At a time only one parallel track is probably a good idea to keep things simple

But I feel bad for characters who are mere wallpaper while they wait for their track

Kusum, Gyan, Chandrika have had really nothing to contribute except their pretty faces

I wish they are given some meaningful dialogues every now and then.
