You Plus I Equals One
He grabbed her by the waist and pushed her against the wall, her back hitting it hard. It was Sanyukta's engagement today and she lied to him, she lied that she loved him, she lied that Sameer was out of her life, and that lie hurt him so much.
She was wearing the clothes from her engagement - the red lengha that she was to be engaged to Sameer in.
There was a bottle on the table and looking at it, Sanyukta knew that Randhir had drank a lot - a lot more than he should have.
"I didn't go through with it," she whispered, as she felt his hands on her hips, his mouth moving closer and closer to hers.
The tears in his eyes were enough indication of the pain that she had caused him.
She looked up shocked as he did that - she had not been expecting him to barge in like this. Her heart pounding inside her chest, her hands sweating out of nervousness, she glanced from her parent's to her brother to Sameer, the man that she was supposed to get engaged to.
"How could you hurt me like this?" Randhir asked, grief clear in his face and her heart ached seeing him in this condition.
"You?" Sameer asked, recognizing Randhir, then he glanced at Sanyukta.
"R - Randhir," Sanyukta gasped, as her family stood around her, shocked.
"Sanyukta," Randhir said and stumbled towards her, grabbing her shoulders.
"What the --" Sameer started but Randhir held out a hand to silence him.
"Stop it!" he yelled. "She - she is mine!"
He didn't know what was going on through his head, but all he knew was that he had to save his Sanyukta from this engagement, even if it meant that she hurt him.
"What?" Sameer yelled, "Sanyukta is he your boyfriend? Did you cheat on me?"
Sanyukta's eyes filled up with tears as the situation played out in front of her.
"Not boyfriend," Randhir said angrily, his face red, turning around to face Sameer. "Fiance. She has already worn my ring."
"Sanyu," Anjali, her mom said, looking shocked. "What is going on?"
Sameer glanced down at the ring that he had made Sanyukta wear and grabbed her hand with force, causing her to wince in pain, but Sanyukta didn't say anything. She was in too much shock.
"Let - go - of - her!" Randhir said angrily through gritted teeth as he pulled Sanyukta's hand away from Sameers.
Randhir held on to Sanyukta's hand gently and started to remove the ring that Sameer had slid on her finger. As he slid it off, Sanyukta looked into his eyes which held so much pain, so much anger, yet so much love - so much love for her.
As soon as the ring came off, Randhir threw it at Sameer and glared at her family.
"She's mine," he threatened, "If you force her to get married to anyone she doesn't want to marry, I will make sure that wedding does not happen."
Then he let go of her hand and stumbled towards the door.
"Sanyukta," Sameer said furiously. "I don't trust anything that he has said, so this engagement will continue."
Sanyukta's head shook from left to right almost involuntarily.
"No," she said.
"What?" Sanyukta's father said, "After all of that humiliation from this boy, you are going to humiliate us now Sanyukta?"
"I will not marry Sameer," she said, her eyes wide, getting courage from Randhir's act.
She picked up the skirt of her lengha and started to run towards the doors of her house.
"Sorry mom, dad, I'm going to run after my dreams," she yelled, a feeling of hope settling inside her chest as she walked out of her house. "Randhir wait!"
--
As soon as she dropped him to his room, he had grabbed her waist and pushed her against the wall and she told him that she didn't do it, that she didn't get engaged to Sameer.
She could smell the alcohol on his breath, but that didn't affect her. All that affected her was Randhir's pain, his heartache, his helplessness.
"I'm sorry," she whispered, her hands reaching up to cup his cheeks. "I'm sorry Randhir."
"You lied," he said angrily, his eyes holding nothing but pain. "All girls are the same. I should have known."
She shook her head and stroked his cheek lovingly.
"I'm not like them," she told him sincerely. "I promise I won't leave you. I'm here now right? I'm always yours."
He looked at her with hope before darkness took over his features again and he shook his head.
"No, you are like them, you're lying to me again," he said angrily.
"I can prove it," she whispered, meaning every bit of it.
"How?" he asked, looking hopeful again.
"You're upset Randhir, you're in this state because of me. The least I can do is join you in this state right?" she asked and gently pushed him back so she could walk to the bottle of alcohol.
"Silly girl!" Randhir said, trying to take the bottle away from her. "That won't prove anything."
She snatched it from him, knowing what she was doing was stupid and very impulsive, but she needed to join him tonight, she needed to tell him that she would be his companion and with every step he took, she would match his footprints with her own.
She downed as much of it as she could before gagging and placed the bottle back on the table. She felt dizzy as Randhir looked at her, and even in this state he was concerned.
"I trust you," she told him with a wide smile. "I know nothing can happen to me if you're here."
"And if it does?" he asked her hoarsely, cupping her cheeks and pulling her face close to his.
"Then I'll gladly accept it," she told him, hiccuping.
She saw the features of his face soften before she rested her head on his shoulder, her hands circling his waist.
With shaking hands, Randhir took out the ring he had sold his motorbike for from his pocket and looked at her.
"Sanyukta," he said, looking deep within her eyes. "Will you be mine forever?"
Her lips started to tremble as tears fell from her eyes and she held her hand out as Randhir slipped the ring on her finger.
"Forever," she whispered truthfully. "I will be yours forever and I'm sure that I have only been yours in the past too."
"How do you know?" he asked, turning around and cupping her cheek with one hand.
"These things you just know," she answered.
"Sanyukta why did you drink?" he then asked.
"To be with you - I want to be with you in all of the states you are in, I want to feel what you're feeling, I want to be as close to you as I can," she told him truthfully. "It may be stupid and might not make sense but Randhir, love never makes sense, does it?"
"I have open wounds and you scratched them again today Sanyukta, be careful," he told her, "I'm a beast."
"Beast or not, I love you Randhir, I love you for who you are, for the heart and soul that you have," she replied genuinely. "And I will continue loving you for that."
"You love me?" he asked, a dreamy expression settling on his face.
"More than I have ever loved anything. I have never felt this way before," she admitted.
"I love you too," he replied and she felt her heart leap.
"Sanyukta you won't lie to me again right?" he asked her, looking hopeful.
She pressed her face on his chest and wrapped her arms around him, feeling safer than ever in his arms.
"I promise I won't," she replied. "I won't ever leave you Randhir. I promise."
It was only because of him that she had found her voice, that she had been able to chase her dreams and she was indebted to him for that.
"You don't owe me anything," he murmured, as if he read her mind and she smiled softly.
"Why not?" she asked, her eyelids getting heavier.
"Because there's no you or me, it's us Sanyukta," he replied, sliding his hands around her waist.
She looked up at him and she felt this sudden attraction towards him and by the way he was looking at her lips, she knew that he could feel it too. Her heart hammering inside her chest, she rested one of her hands on his shoulder, one on the nape of his neck and leaned towards him to close the gap between them.
As their lips met in a gentle kiss, her stomach performed somersaults and her mind went wild. This didn't feel like it was enough. Not today.
"There's no you or me," she repeated, "Just us. We are one."
Then she pressed her lips against his again and he automatically knew how she felt - his lips parted for her to deepen the kiss and she did. Her tongue met his in a kiss of love, one where they wanted to feel everything about the other one, one where they didn't care for the world... one where they both decided to go after their dreams, and their dream was to be in each other's arms tonight.
