Wonderful update Racha and Aris.
Anita's hands on Ahem? ..I am sure Agni will come up with something. I am relying on this guy to sort everything out because our hero and heroine do not see the problem - communication!!
I loved how Agni made Anita fall asleep. 🤣His lecture on economy must have been a lullaby to Anita's ears.😆

Part 6
Yaaro,

I apologize that I've been neglecting this (Aris, to you too!). I've been slogging for my final exams and now that it's over, I can finally focus on Gohem. I have to confess, reveal, parda faash 🤣 that I have a definite idea about Roulette's end, so it is easier to write it now. Just ask Aris how many times I've changed my mind over one particular unnamed aspect if you're curious and she'll tell you. I could be nicknamed Hot 'n Cold--seriously.

Recap:
Anita escapes from Agni's close watch and goes to Mumbai to meet Ahem. Meanwhile, everyone at the MM finds out that Anita has left to be by Ahem. Rashi convinces Koki to let her and The League (Agni, Jigar, Gopi, and Rashi) to go to Mumbai. A dejected Gopi makes a promise to Koki that upon returning, everything in Ahem and her marriage will be sorted out. In Mumbai, at a business party that Ahem is attending, Agni and Gopi see Anita and Ahem embracing in the garden.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gopi turned around with shrunken shoulders, trying to hide her embarrassment and her pain from Agni. There was no point, of course. He'd seen them also.

"Gopiji" Agni repeated, hoping she would pause. When she didn't, he decided to go up to her himself.

Gopiji shouldn't let Anita crawl all over Ahem like that, Agni thought. He retracted his thought the next second. It wasn't just Anita's fault. If Ahem didn't say something soon, Anita's actions would scar Gopi's soul.

Gopi heard his steady footsteps approaching her and wiped away her tears.

Several feet away from them, Ahem heard muffling noises and looked to the side. He first saw his wife. Although she had her back to him, he could put at stake his life that the woman slowly walking away with her head bent low was his wife. He was that sure!

Meanwhile, Anita felt Ahem's fingers grip her shoulder. He was pushing her away from him. "Gopi!" he called out, more with elation than with the irritation he had shown when Gopi had refused to accompany him to Mumbai at the MM. Anita looked at Gopi and Agni, frowning with unmasked anger. She had managed to escape Agni's scrutiny, but all to no avail. Now, he had even brought that Gopi with him here. She cursed Agni in her heart! He had always been the one to sabotage her plans. Even when she had been dating Ahem, Agni would plan trips and outings without her. It was as if he was breathing only to ruin her life!

Ahem let go of Anita so suddenly that she almost tripped over her own feet. Without a word to her, Ahem went towards Gopi. By that time, however, even Agni was by her side. "Tum...tum dono...what are you two doing in Mumbai, in this party?" Ahem asked Gopi. Agni answered for her, knowing she was still trying to put on a brave face, and said, "Woh...Gopiji was--" However, Ahem didn't let him finish. "She wanted to come to Mumbai. I know," he said smiling at Gopi. "Thank you for bringing her here, Agni" he added, taking Gopi's hand in his own. Agni looked at Gopi, but she looked away because her Ahemji had no idea that the reason she had come to Mumbai had been to stop Anita from coming closer to him.

Gopi wanted to pull her hand away from the confusion of feeling so many emotions in one moment, but refrained her urge for the sake of her husband's pride. When she could finally speak, she quietly said, "Rashiben and Jigarji are here too, Ahemji." Ahem looked confused for a second and then, smiled again as he realized that everyone, including him, wanted to keep her in a bubble of protection. Of course, his mother wouldn't let Gopi come alone, especially after she had gotten lost in Switzerland. And he knew that Gopi wouldn't come alone with Agni. That wouldn't be proper in her eyes even if Agni was his good friend.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rashi turned over the bedcovers and slipped next to Jigar who had already fallen asleep. He must've been really tired, she thought to herself. His arm came over her stomach casually and he pulled her closer as if he subconsciously knew that it was her. In an attempt to sleep, Rashi closed her eyes, but sleep didn't come. She turned onto her side, away from Jigar, and recalled the past events of that night. A flustered Anita had excused herself after meeting them and when everyone had checked into their rooms, Ahemjiju had taken Gopi with him to his room.

Determined to ask Gopi about what happened between Anita and Ahem, Rashi turned around once again, but this time, she felt a wave of nausea come over her. She really needed to figure out what was happening to her. Amidst Anita's rat race, she hadn't even gotten the time to tell Jigarji about it, she realized.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In Ahem's hotel room, which was on the 5th floor, Gopi stood by the ceiling-to-floor glass windows and stared a the hotel's garden below. A thousand questions whirled inside her head. What had really happened between Ahem and Anita? Had she said anything about her feelings? How had Ahemji replied?

The bathroom door creaked slowly as it opened, signaling that Ahemji was coming out of the bathroom. She stood frozen, next to the crystal clear glass. It was dark outside and the moon was nowhere to be seen.

Gopi saw Ahem walking towards her in the glass's reflection.

"Abhi tak soyi nahi?" he asked her softly. "Aren't you sleepy after your flight?" he questioned her when he was close enough to her. Gopi, her head barely reaching his shoulder, turned to look at him. With his hair ruffled and his white kurta slightly wrinkled, he looked less inhibited.

Ahem was about to question her again, but she spoke first. Timidly, Gopi asked him, "What was Anita doing here, Ahemji?"

Ahem knew where her questions were going. For one thing, he had sensed her apprehension from the moment he'd seen her walking away from him in the garden. She must've seen Anita hugging him, he realized for the first time that night. Also, her question betrayed the state of her mind.

He replied softly, more to calm his temper than to ease her worry, "Why are we doing this again, Gopi? I've told you that Anita (Paused) Why did you change your mind about coming here?" Gopi looked away at first, but he knew the answer. He also knew that if he told Gopi that Anita confessed her feelings for him, she would endlessly worry again. "What did she say?" Gopi asked him. "Forget about it, Gopi. You know, I don't like speaking about her," he replied, feeling irritated by her questions. Gopi, however, wouldn't budge and said, "She lied to Maaji about visiting her friend and came here instead!"

Ahem pretended that he hadn't heard her and asked again, "Why did you come here?" He saw a tiny frown appear on her forehead. She was losing her temper, he realized to his disbelief. His prim and proper wife, who was as reserved as a resting butterfly with folded wings, was loosening the leashes on her emotions. Nowadays, she was upfront about her questions, more daring in her answers, and brazen about expressing her emotions. He wasn't sure he liked it. He wanted his demure Gopi back because this one was fast becoming too difficult to handle.

He reached for her face, but she stepped away from him. "Gopi, let's go to sleep. You must be tired," he told her. Unfortunately, the room had only one bed and two arm chairs that wouldn't be comfortable for either of them. He began walking towards the bed.

Gopi looked at him with disappointment and asked, "Why aren't you answering my questions, Ahemji? Don't you realize how embarrassing it is for me that even Agniji saw you and Anita hugging?" Ahem stopped and turned around. "Couldn't I say the same about you and Agni, Gopi? What were you doing with him in the garden? How long were you there with him?" he asked her inquisitively and then, added, "I know that you know your limits. Agni wouldn't do that to me, but why don't you understand that about me? Come and sleep, Gopi, you're worrying about nothing."

Gopi gave up her argument and went towards one of the armchairs to sleep. "You're not sleeping there, Gopi" she heard Ahem say, but she kept on walking. If he didn't answer her questions, then she didn't want to listen to whatever else he was saying. She was already exhausted from fighting every step of the way. Would her fight ever end? Ahemji's fingers slipped around her forearm and he turned her around. He wasn't happy at all from the noticeable pulse pounding at his temple and the pinching way his fingers were digging into her skin.

Ahem wondered why she was being so difficult. Angrily, he told her "You won't sleep here. You'll sleep on the bed!" "Where will you sleep?" she asked, unafraid to show her unhappiness over the idea. "I'll sleep there also, Gopi. These chairs would be uncomfortable for both of us and there aren't enough blankets for a makeshift bed on the floor" he explained with extreme patience. He watched her debate her possibilities. When had she become adverse to sharing space with him? It irked him, but he was appalled more by it.

"I can't sleep on the bed with you, Ahemji" she told him thoughtfully. The way she said it, so politely, as if she were doing him a favor, was what ticked him off. The thin thread of patience, which held the remainder of his anger from the moment her questions had started, snapped. In one swift movement, he picked her up and marched towards the bed. She, on the other hand, tried to shake his shoulders, but he wouldn't budge. He placed her upon the mattress and pulled the covers over her. Then, he laid down next to her. Whether she was shocked by his actions or too angry to speak, he didn't know, but when he turned his head towards her, he found that she was staring at the ceiling and her fingers were holding onto the edges of the coverlet as if she were contemplating running away.

"Aise hatt kyun karti ho, Gopi? Why are you being so stubborn?" he asked her softly with a small smile. His fingers tucked a strand of loose hair behind her ear, but she turned to her side, facing away from him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next morning, Rashi paced to and fro in the lobby. She had to talk to Jigarji about herself. While he went to get them coffee, she pondered her approach. What would she tell him? It wouldn't matter. Knowing him, he'd insist she see a doctor immediately. She returned his grin with a smile as he came with two cups of coffee. "This is for you!" he told her. After thanking him, she began to broach the subject, but Ahem, Gopi and Agni came and she stopped herself.

During the flight back to Rajkot, Anita flipped through an old issue of Cosmopolitan, which had no tips on getting out of lies. She felt someone sit next to her, but didn't look up.

Agni watched her for a full 2 minutes before speaking. In a cool voice, he asked "Are you contemplating pulling a Carmen Sandiego?" "Shut up!" she replied angrily. "Why is it that you're always here to pester me? Don't you have some cases to fight? A business to run? Something other than being my 24/7 bodyguard?" she spat just as angrily.

(Note: Carmen Sandiego is a cartoon titled "Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?" that I watched when I was 12.😳 She was a most-wanted thief, who loved to steal antiquated one-of-a-kind pieces. In the last 12 seconds of every episode, the cops would find the stolen goods and attempt to catch her, but she would always escape by all sorts of means. Aaah, childhood. You are missed greatly!😭)

Agni grinned that boyish grin that irked her always and he said nonchalantly, "Do you know that if a person always told the truth, he would have no need for a good memory? You lied to Koki Aunty and now, everyone knows what you've been trying to do. Even Gopi knows. (Chuckled to himself) You know, in the past night, I've wondered what you thought you were doing when you came to Mumbai. Did you expect Ahem to give in so easily? Remember he left you because he held his mother's wishes in much greater esteem. Why would he change his mind now, especially when he has fallen in love with Gopi? He is happy with her, haven't you noticed? (Paused) Oh, I'm so sorry! I didn't realize you were reading. Carry on. I'll just mind my own and take a nap. I hope you don't mind. (Worriedly) You don't mind, right?"

Anita felt like bashing Agni's head with the magazine, but she didn't. It would create a scene and right now, she had to think. What would she tell Koki?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope you all noticed that some of the misery is gone in this part. I realize that the other parts didn't have an ounce of happiness, so this is the first step towards that direction. I hope you also noticed that the dynamics are changing. Gopi is changing. No longer is she the demure, quiet, shy, controlled, reserved Gopi. She is no longer afraid of asking questions. She thinks and she voices her opinion. She exerts her own power in their marriage. Ahem, too, is changing. I can't disclose the direction of his transformation just yet, but I am 100% sure that you will love what I have planned!

One last thing, I just need to know for myself whether readers entwine TV's Ahem into this as they read or whether they keep TV's Ahem separate from Roulette's Ahem. Please leave your answers in your comments! Further parts will follow quite rapidly as I'm off from school for just one week and I have kept you waiting for a several days now.
