Since the format does not demand it, it is pointless to argue whether the purpose of this talent hunt show is to find out a versatile singer. Why should any participant endanger their chances in the competition by trying things which the competition has not strictly envisaged ?

Gopal Bhai, I wish Gajji was replaced by you seriously then the show would've reached its heights even more... then mentors need not start their drama for trps atleast... I so agree with your idea👏

Well said gopal bhai, the theme instead of being rain songs, 60-70 songs, favourite singer songs, etc, should be classical, semi classical, folk, sufi, item number, romantic, sentimental and so on. phir dudh ka dudh aur paani ka ho jyata.

Do not pick on a few participants, either make it compulsory for all or let them sing what they want.

As far as Vishal is concerned. He should suggest it but not insist on it...

I agree gopalbhai..I have always wondered when this versatility issue has been brought up in the very initial stages of the show, why didnt they format the forthcoming rounds in such a way which makes the contestants sing in a particular genre each week..that way we can find out their strengths and weaknesses..

Now there is no said format for them to "have to" sing a particular genre of song, and being in the crucial Agnipariksha rounds they will obviously select songs from their most comfort zone..

if he can ask musarrat to try his hand at versatility then why he doesnt ask mauli to do that same? oh yes she did it once, and vishal asked her why did you choose this song? when she chooses the song, she gets reprimanded for choosing a different song and then when she comes back to her own genre, he praises her and gives full 10, so may i ask vishal why that difference between mauli and musarrat, if mauli can stick to one genre, then let musarrat stick to one genre.

U r right..Vishal's inconsistency in comments and opinion in this matter is very obvious..earlier he did tell Mauli to sing songs outside her genre..somehow slowly he forgot all abt that, and started encouraging her when she sang all item songs kinds..he tried doing that with Amanat but Amanat proved to be very versatile and that he cud do justice to songs from any genre..then Vishal picked on Musarrat for sometime with this versatility issue, and when on Saturday Musarrat sang his own genre sufi song so wonderfully, Vishal himself said "I keep telling u to be versatile..but when u sing ur own genre song in this mindblowing way, meri bolti bandh ho jati hai"..

But in all this, note that he never talks abt the versatility issue with contestants in his own gharana..thats strange, eh? All i mean to say is, if there is a rule or opinion by any mentor, there is no problems with that..Vishal has every right to demand the singers to sing a variety of songs..but it shud apply to all the contestants equally and not just a certain few..

Setting aside all the judges opinions for and against versatility, I personally think its an important aspect.

It is a singing talent show (or atleast was) which spans over long duration and it is great fun to see the strong and weak points of the singers in different genres. Some do well in all and some don't. Its all abt the talent they possess. Now if a singer is great in one genre and crap in others and another is great in one and average in others and yet another is great in all genres ..who do u think is more talented?
Commercially a singer may do well in one genre and continue singing similar kind of songs but probably won't enjoy the sustained admiration of the junta for long. Legends like Ashaji,Lataji,Kishore Kumar and even newer singers like Sonu Nigam,Shaan,Shreya n Sunidhi are appreciated due to the multitude of talent they possess. We do enjoy Ashajis peppy numbers n her slow ones same with the others.
