In my sad moments, only Rafi/Talat/Mukesh songs come to my mind. Not that I don't like the Kishore songs you have all mentioned, they touched me too.

Same here. I have mostly associated sad songs to Mohd. Rafi but some of Kishore Kumar's sad renditions are soul-stirring.

When I think of Kishore-da's songs more of his serious (not always sad) songs come to my mind because they appeal me much much more than his masti-bhare songs...

- dukhi man mere sun mera kehana - Funtoosh
- koi humdam na raha, koi sahara na raha - Zumaru
- raat kali ek khwab mein ayee - Budhha Mil Gaya
- woh sham kuchh ajeeb thi - Khamoshi
- zindagi ke safar mein gujar jate hai woh makam - Aap Ki Kasam
- diye jalte hai, phool khilate hai - Namak Haram
- badi suni suni hai - Mili
- yeh kya hua, kaise hua, kab hua -- Amar Prem
- rim zim gire sawan - Mazil
- pal pal dil ke paas - Blackmail
- mere mehboob qayamat hogi - Mr. X in Bombay
- o majhi re - Khusboo
- teri duniya se hoke majboor chala - Pavitra Papi
- meri bhigi bhigi si - Anamika
- tun bin jaoo kahan - Pyar Ka Mausam
- chingari koi bhadake - Amar Prem
- mera jivan kora kagaz - Kora Kagaz
- aaye tum yaad mujhe - Mili
- musafir hun yaron - Parichay
- aa chal ke tuze - Door Gagan ki Chhaon Mein
- kuchh to log kahenge - Amar Prem
- jeevan se bhari teri ankhe - Safar
- mere naina sawan bhado - Mehbooba
- zindagi ka safar, hai yeh kaisa safar - Safar..

The list is endless...

I don't know which genre KK was better in, but his sad, slow songs were much more popular, in general, than his upbeat ones. That's why, when you say 'Kishore Kumar', most people remember his songs from the 70s onwards - when he sang most of his serious songs - as opposed to the 50s and much of the 60s - when he was mostly considered for upbeat, masti bhare songs, and ignored for the serious, sad ones which usually went to Rafi.

Even the '70s saw a lot of his upbeat songs. RD ensured this in his several compositions, for which he preferred Kishore's full throated voice. So, it's quite incorrect to say that his serious songs were mostly in the 1970s and his upbeat songs were mostly in the 1960s.

When you say that his 70's songs were more popular I would say that the reason for this is perhaps RD. It was RD who recognised his full potential and brought it out. RD was not afraid to experiment. Whereas the others before him were cautious in using KK - they did not wish to give up Rafi who was established, RD was outright in his switch. So I would attribute the popularity to RD's use of him.

some more serious songs of KK----

mere deewanepan ki bhi dawa nahi

yeh jeewan hai is jeewanka yahi hai rang roop

kaise kahen hum pyaar ne humko kya kya khel dikhaye

khiza ke phool se aati kabhi bahar nahin

dil aisa kisi ne mera toda amanush bana kechoda

main shayar badnaam

yeh lal rang kab mujhe chodega, mera gham

mere naseeb mein ai dost tera pyaar nahin.

I love all three of them and if I ever sat to think which would rank higher, I know I would flounder... the loneliness in Koi hota jisko apna, the loneliness in Din dhaal jaaye, raat na jaaye... and a similar emotion in Jaaye toh Jaaye kahan are all unique...

I love all of them... its just my heart which yearns for Kishore Kumar a lil more than others... my head which points out all of Rafi Saab's songs... my ear which picks out Talat Mehmood as the silkiest voice ever...

Well said Priyadi.👏 Ahm....ahm..... I would like to add Mukesh, Manna Dey and Hemantda to the list too😳

In my view KK was and is the best in emotional songs. let us not mark those as "sad songs". Kishore has a unique "dard" in his voice even in fast numbers that was not prominant in both Rafi and Talat (I am also a huge Rafi fan). Interestingly Manna Dey and in some extent Mukesh ji had that quality.
If you consider "main hoon jhumru", "mere naina sawan bhado", "Hazar Rahen (with lataji)", "Ruk jaana nehin", "dil aaj shair hai", "aaye tum yaad mujhe", "kabhi bekashi ne mara" even "mukaddar ka sikandar" none of them are so called sad songs but there is an inherent sadness present in those.

I think the best sad song singer undoubtedly was Mukeshji. His numbers are the best. How can one forget "zinda hoon main is tarahh", "jaane kahan gayen woh din", "awwara hoon", "dost dost na raha", "kahin dur jab din dhal jaye"....
