classical training how important or relevant it is for playback singing..

i know for a fact that both KK and kunal ganjawala dont have seekhi hui awaz..they said so on radio city..sunidhi,when she won meri awaz suno had no training at all..so did mukesh and many others... still they remain extraordinarily successful

there are trained voices too..kavitha k,shankar mahadevan,sonu and others

as for purpose of SGMP, i think it's always been about promoting good singing talent. the old format did that with only marginal success- shreya, kunal etc are basically among the very few who got noticed after 10 years of running the show. with public votes, we got more of that promotion, all within the space of a year. by and large, all good singers got their due. and we did get a lot of good names, didnt we? of course, how many ultimately make it big remains to be seen. but public voting did help give them the start in terms of bigger name recognition, didn't it?

incidentally, what was so wrong with debo? certainly better than some of the others that we keep pining for. 😉 😉 😉

Mohd Vakil has a ghazal album to his name...
Shweta Pandit has sung some film songs...
Bela has a pop album...
Sanjeevani had some nice songs in Kareeb...
Shoma has sung in a lot of Oriya movies...
Ronkini (it seems) even has composed some music now...
Sandeep (or some similar name) has sung and acted in Telugu movies...
Abhijeet is working with Louis Banks for some fusion album...

...and I'm sure there are others that we dont know anything about...

btw, werent some of these people who later participated in c2005 and emaet found to be lacking even on musical terms? example Abhijeet, Hrishikesh. Judges found these guys great, but they were exposed when they had to go in front of the janta/ practitioners (mentors). they sounded flat IMO. 😊

also, maybe we wld have had more such names if they had public voting all those years. kyoon bhai?

chatbuster your argument that reality show is not a successfull launch pad for upcoming singers....I OBJECT STRONGLY😆

please name the new successful play back singers who have emerged in the last few years...i mean they shd have atleast 30 -40 songs to their credit....i will name the ones from talent shows...

who are the others..KK,shaan and others...

there is only so much room at the top..look at the percentage...not bad i would say!!

the others who have got breaks are sanjeevni a(9 films)shweta pandit(5 films),pamela jain(meri awaz suno)-6 films..is vijay prakash from srgmp..he sangfor swades,bose ,kaal etc?

it may be coincidence..but sonus popularity soared with SRGM..people became his fans and wanted to encourage him by buying his music..he was wonderful on INDIAN idol(not II2)he became a rage...shaan too became more popular after his srgmp stint...same goes for KK(FG)s..this year has been fantastic for him...

there is something about television..look at Trump almost every billionaire wants to be on tv(even our very own ZEE cheif)..every model wants to do a show like Tyra banks..every show judge wants to be Simon cowell....

evryone knows that beauty contests are stepping stones to bollywood...few make it to the top...but almost everybody gets a foot hold inside the industry..same goes for reality shows...

Let us see some of the Judges..

Alka Yagnik: Top notch female singer,What better Judge you can look for as far as musical knowlege is concerned.. Watch her decisions, at least you can safely say they are not perfect, some people here have blamed her to be insecure and not giving due marks to the better candidates especially females..

Abhijeet: He can be both weird and emotional at the same time..you can never get consistent results from him..

Ismail Darbar:He is supposed to be the fairest.. He gets emotional fast and start giving 50 rupees notes..Start going to stage to give aashirwaad to Himani"Is ladkee ne to kaleja cheer diya aaj" Why we blame public if they become emotional and start voting for a particular candidate..Looks like emotion is part of the game..

The new Judges including Sunidhi, shoim miitra (sorry don't know the exact name) Pritam..10 10 10 10 giving 10 to every body ..They are scared of what will happen to their career if they pissed any mentor..Judges are not impartial after all..Public at least is not affected by the career considerations..

The current sensation Himmy bhai..Vinit , Vinit and Vinit...First 10 positions are for Vinit and for others it start with position 11. I know he was a mentor and supporting Vinit..but did you notice How obsessive this guy can become..You think he can be a fair Judge....So what if public become obsessive about one contestant..

Jagjeet Singh: He being a Judge is supposed to be neutral and our Jagjeet Singh is making statements like..Aishwariya ko to mike pakdna nahin aata...The same Aishwariya won the EMAET contest..and got accolades from the other Judges( Harihran and Leslie ji) several times for his singing. If it was upto Jagjit Singh this guy should have said good bye to Bombay..So different Judges can have different decisions ...He is gazal maestro but far from a perfect Judge..

OP Nayar: Among the Judges I have found his decisions more balanced..but see this guys history..If you see Nayar saab's history..you will be scared to think he would not be biased..

Judges with classical backgrounds.. How can you expect they being not biased towards singers who knows some classical..that is a human nature..

My point is ..Judges may have all the musical knowledge in the world but you cannot expect them from free of all the biases...

not that i have written any classic, but perhaps if we had read my "works" more carefully, we'd have seen that i have been arguing for public voting and for talent shows, not against. Last post was more tongue-in-cheek😛

my mistake chat buster(always short of time).. as this is a dicussion..i started with judges voting..then moved on to public...it really doesnt matter to me..i am a music talent show addict..i enjoyed srgm for decade,not at all embarassed to admit that i watched every episode of indian idol,FG,meri awaz suno,aao jhoomein gaayen,american idol,rockstar supernova...kuch bhi chalega... 😆

now i hear a new show is starting on starplus which has md.rafi's grandson particpating..i cant wait 😛

and what a wonderful 2 cents it has been. those are the sikkas that will turn to billions😆

while we have have been at it, why forget rongta man aadesh shri and the chemistry teachers groovy groupies. we did hear the nice folks here sounding unhappy with their pronouncements, didnt we? even favorite boy shaan showed his emerging diplomatic skills when he was put in the judges corner, not exactly what we would want from judges. judges have to be mentally strong enough to let the chips fall where they may, even if it hurts their interest and their popularity. unfortunately, more often than not, most of the judges we have had are somewhere looking for public accolades themselves, not pin-point judgment.

which is why i say go with the public. yeh sab jaantee hai😆
