Following is a short write-up summarizing the events in this thread. If I have incorrectly demonstrated someone's stance, forgive me as I wasn't a regular visitor to this thread during the last few days.
Passions run high on SRGMP's first DOTW
SRGMP forums first Discussion (or is it Debate) Of The Week was held last week, and what an affair it was. The topic itself was one close to many SRGMP fans' hearts - the issue of picking a winner for reality shows.
'SRGMP Contests: Who should Judge'. Topic initiator Jaya brought forward this question. Should winners be selected by judging or public voting? Jaya was sure to remind people to keep passions in check - but even she wouldn't have expected such a heated debate.
What the fans want
Before we get into the details, a short update on the major participants and their stance:
jayc1234 - Jaya felt both judges and public can together play an equal part in selecting a deserving winner, while also serving as a system of checks-and-balances. Contestants should be ranked separately based on judges' decisions and votes received. A combination of those two rankings would help determine the overall ranks and elimination. Inspired by the format in dance show Nach Baliye.
Jaadoogar - Jadoo felt only public voting was the way to go. However, the public should be limited to one vote per phone number.
Barnali/Vinnie_thepooh - Agreed with Jadoo.
Ankita/Sur_Sangam/Chatbuster - Supported public voting. They felt it was important for the public to feel involved, which would increase the contestants' exposure to public - hence bettering their chances for the future. According to them, judges were not free of flaws either, and their choices wouldn't necessarily reflect popular opinion.
Charades/Dolly/srgmp/juggyE - Strongly supported getting rid of public voting and making it a judges-only decision. Their argument was that the uninformed public were not capable of selecting real talent, and often let other non-musical factors cloud their judgment.
Gauri_2 - Came up with her own EUREKA brainwave. Let the experts judge the singing. As far as getting people involved, they can be asked to vote for other extraneous factors like looks, charm, hair, confidence, etc, special awards for which would would be given in each category. That way, the public would also feel like a part of the show.
shadyhtown - Simply said that the format for C2005 was the best - where both judges and public were involved at different stages. Judges would trim a large sample down to a select few, all of whom would be talented. From there the public could take over.
Unflinching members
At first the debate (sorry - discussion) seemed to be going peacefully. Enter VJ (charades), who strongly opposed the public's involvement in any form. Jaya, who until now had been calmly presenting the merits of a combined judges/public system to an enthralled (and sometimes bored) audience, got energized. A lenghty discussion followed between them, where both Jaya and VJ threw arguments back and forth for and against public voting, respectively. VJ felt public voting never chose the best winner, whereas Jaya felt it brought contestants into the public eye and provided even those who didn't win with a great platform.
Dolly, Juggy, and srgmp backed up VJ, and Ankita, Sur_Sangam, and Rahul (CB) were right with Jaya. What followed was tons of pages of discussions and arguments and evidences and examples and names and predictions. Gauri and Jadoo also lent support to the respective factions.
Soon, it became obvious that this had turned into a discussion on the real purpose of the show. One side felt the main and only goal was to pick a single deserving winner, whereas the other side felt it was to provide a platform to promote the talent of all the deserving finalists - whether they won or not.
However, neither side was willing to give an inch. Frustrations grew, tempers flared, and exclamation marks (!!) came into play. Implications and accusations flew left and right. This had well and truly turned into a raging debate. Realizing that there was no end to the arguments, and to prevent any mishap, it was decided to halt the debate - with no verdict in sight.
