"Why has the quality of singers, in these reality shows, declined?"
finding good singers from the masses out there is a lot like mining for gold. it's an expensive operation to drill and set up a mine. once you have it, you want to keep going at it for as long as you can. i suppose sgmp went through that process a year ago when they went across to different towns to hunt for talent. that must have been expensive in terms of time, energy and money. ever have a recruiter flyying around different towns to interview candidates, or a college admissions officer doing that with high-schoolers?
in terms of new singers, let's look at some numbers. in previous format, i am told we had one new singer a week. that made 52 new singers a year. actually less because they often had re-runs. what do we have now? well, they gave us 32 new singers all at once about 9 months ago after pruning them down from a 100 or so, and they in turn were selected from lakhs. i'd say the new format gave us better numbers.
now consider quality. with the old format, not all the singers were that good, often making the contest one-sided. with the new format, we have had singers from far-flung places get an opportunity to try out, folks who would have never been sent by their parents to Mumbai to audition or try out. to my mind, the new format brought us better quality because it had reputable MDs get involved in the process and look far-and-wide for those golden nuggets.
so why the feeling that the "quality" has declined. well, that's because of the perception that the show is now on performance, not singing. that perception is partly correct, but we did have performance aspects even earlier. performance comes in as soon as we see something, not just hear it. true, we seemed to have swung too far on the performance side of things. but still, there is nothing wrong with the quality of the singers. to my mind, they are as good as ever, probably better. they are just made to present the performance aspects during the shoot, because at the end of the day sgmp and Zee also have to make money.
finally, let's run a historical back-test. how many top name singers did the old format give us? apart from shreya, maybe another 5 or 10 that we remember. total of 10? over a period of 10 years? how many of the new singers are already household names? well, debo and vinit for sure. that's already 2 in less than a year.
i can similarly go on about viewership where we now have folks like me watching the show- some of us do like the variety-show aspect of the new format, as also the competitive nature of it. what did we have earlier? someone new every week. no opportunity to have invested our emotions on the new one. at the end of the day, however good or bad something is, it needs viewers or money to sustain it. as they say in the VC business, ideas need money to grow.
folks, it's often important to cut down and be a bit analytical before we get very critical.
🤢
Frankly CB, reading your post I could say that you do not have proper knowledge of the old SRGM format because they had four contestants every week and six on some weeks. Considering 4 a week that makes 208 new talents. I just strongly disagree with your views.
The only thing I would like to say is
Earlier SRGM used to be a show for the CLASSES, and now unfortunately its a show for the MASSES.
change is always difficult to accept in life .....If we become too attached to a single idea, and then a day comes when this idea is no longer possible, it can lead to feelings of frustration and loss.....even saregamapa has gone through change .....may be due to the pressure from the other channels or may be something else .....if its good or bad its difficult to say ....saregamapa has always been about film music ......the only difference is that in the old format they were concentrating mostly on old melodies and semi calssical songs from films .....now they concentrate more on fast numbers and youth songs....whether it is for more Trp or to get popular whatever the reason may be Zee has made a drastic change in the format....i am sure whoever made the change is very happy ....as for us viewers its difficult to accept this because in present days where we have MTV kind of channels and programmes saregamapa was a hope to listen to old melodies or see young people paying attention to old classics.....it was like relief from all the chaos ...saregamapa was the only programme to watch with family and it had lot of loyal viewers ...i guess when saregamapa changed its format it became just another reality show ......just my thoughts 😉 😊
and what thoughts!😆
so that's a viewer's perspective. any verdict on the quality of the singers, old vs. new?
[looks like i'll have to take this a step at a time😆]

208 new talents? didnt the previous week winners get to repeat? wldnt' that be 2 new talents a week, making a total of 104? [i was wrong in thinking it was 52, so thx for the correction]
wld it be better if sgmp trouped all all the 1000s they had short-listed after their india-wide search, two each week, instead of putting the very best up front? i wld rather have others go through the nonsense and just put up the very best.
btw, like the line at the end. acha hai😉
but seriously, it's just a line, surely not an analytical statement?

yaar, thx for the info. but as we can imagine, sgmp wld have a list of all the 1000s they had short-listed from the India-wide search. wld it better to just palm them off each week two or three at a time, and act as if they were the best? what's wrong in simply having the top 32 repeat for a few months or a year?

i cant imagine the problem is with the singing talent they have unearthed. to my mind, these are as good as ever, if not better. there of course seems to be controversy with how they are presented. dont know if others agree on that point at least.

and a third part is-
frankly, dont we have more "fun" now? criticisizing, bashing, admiring, generally being more emotionally invested? i think the MTVs dont have that because they dont get folks involved as much. no emotion= no involvement= no masti= dull life?
at least the new format has gotten people involved enuff in the show that they now understand some of the terminology viz sur, taal, dil-se-gana, importance of attitude (topi)😉
