A good singer according to me is one who is pleasing to the ear and the soul.

The genre may be classical, semi-classical, ghazal, rock, pop, hip-hop, R&B or even rap. All that does not matter - in the end, what I like counts...technique or no technique.

3. Sharabi ( All songs )

i think the following things are important for a good singer:
1. sur aur taal ka pakka
2. pleasant and immaculate (nirmal) voice
3. conveys emotions through notes

Any wizardry (chamatkRti) he/she shows on top of these three things would be icing on the cake

After that, Naushad gave him another opportunity to sing in the film Anmol Ghari. Here he sang the song Tera Khilona Tuta Balak. Then came the super smashing hit from Dulari 'Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki' under Naushad. Songs of the film Baiju Bawra in the year 1952 propelled his popularity to the extreme. It was after Dulari that MDs started taking him seriously.

well not sure what you are trying to get at. it seems to me you are contradicting yourself or accepting that rafi had established himself before saigal's death.

dulari came out in 1949. before then rafi had sung the so called "smashing hit" with noor jehan in 1947 in jugnu (MD: firoz nizami). shyam sunder himself was an "established" MD. the website biography fails to mention this.

Amitabh was kind of ugly looking with a deep baritone for a voice so obviously he wouldnt suit for him, nor for the successful rajesh khanna, Dev anand..etc...but again.. if you see Parwana.. rafi suits amitabh veri well.... So its basically shuffling the singers based on voice and situations.. S D Burman was good at that... He was veri particular about not leaning towards a particular singer and would respond to the need of the moment.. like in Abhimaan, when Amit is shown successful, he has kishores voice , then when he get competition from Jaya he has rafis voice and when he is shattered he is manhar.. finally when he gains back his confidence he is kishore again...(may be this was just to avoid showing Lata superior to kishore or anything like that) he was the best at shuffling....where loyalty was the order of the day...All had their own camps.

i tend to agree with you. the only point was to counter the blanket statements like "it sounds stupid to see him [rafi] sing for amitabh bachchan" ...

The "Swapna zhade phul se meet chube shul se" from nayi umar ki nayi fasal. i havent heard more poetry and poetic vocabulary in any song so far, its like reciting a poem - can it be sung like a ghazal!!!??? Possibly but it is one pure hindi song unlike ghazals which have to have a lot of urdu words!!!!The

May I add a few more numbers in parellel with the above number? A few that comes to mind and only a singer of Rafi's caliber could lift such numbers to the heights of shear ecstacy. The kind of rendering that moved many Hindi/Urdu music lovers to tears, happiness and at times made them stop and think and other times float ah how to describe?? When I hear some of his songs I say Oh God what a voice what a person Oh God thank you for giving us such a voice and I invariabbly say Salam, Salam to Mohammad Rafi
1.Main yeh soch kar uske dar se utha tha ke woh rok legi mana legi mujhko.(Haqeeqat)Madan Mohanji,Qaifi Aazmi)
2.Yeh duniya agar mil bhi jaye to kya hai(Kagaz ke phool,SD Burman and Sahir Ludhiyanvi
3.Hum ne jafa na seekhi, Unko wafa na aayi, Patthar se dil lagaya aur dil pe chot khayi,(SJ,Shalendra
in this number just listen to, 'Apne hi dil ke hathon majboor ho gaye hum'
!!!!!!!!!! Ah you will have wet eyes.

I agree with Dwarkanathji about Rafi's voice NOT suiting Amitabh Bachchan. Kishore Kumar's was the voice ideally suited for him. That's why there are only a few songs in which Rafi has done playback for AB like "patta patta boota boota", "teri bindiya re", "mere desh premiyon (ugh!). Somehow the full-blooded, "angry young man" persona of AB comes forth only with Kishore's voice

But Rafi's voice suited almost everyone else, even Rajesh Khanna ("baagon mein bahhar hai"). Of course, I loved Rafi's voice best on Dev Anand, Shammi K and Johny Walker. Nothing to beat the combination of Johny Walker and Rafi!

And Talat was best suited for Dilip Kumar - soft, romantic, brooding. Sometimes, when I hear Talat, I feel it is he who can NEVER have CLONES. It was an absolutely unique voice and I think he is one of the only singers whose voice did not deteriorate throughout his singing career. His last movie Jahanara is as good as the first.

Somewhere over the years, both Rafi and Kishore lost the perfection that they had once achieved. I can't bear to listen to some of KK's later songs. Even Rafi's voice didn't have freshness in songs like "Yamma yamma" from Shaan.
