what makes for a good singer and good music ??...is probably a question that has haunted listeners and artists alike. what do you guys think.....??/

1) is it a function of fad

there are times when rap becomes more popular , there are times when aria(opera) is considered the most advanced form of art and so on.

2) is singing capability inborn or is it more a function of tremendous hard work( riyaaz)

3) is it okay to plagarize small pieces of music from other composition into your composition(most bollywood directors excel in it).

4) while musician , singer and writer(of the song) all contribute to a number , which aspect of a song is most important.

5) is a certain kind of voice better than other?? for example nasal voice is often considered irritating and a stumbling block for the singer but salma agga, penaz masani and currently hr all have delivered very successful and melodious songs in it.

A good singer in my opinion is one who is technically sound, has excellent diction, and is not bound by a genre
Manna De, Asha ji
Everybody is copying each other since early days
Lataji copied, till she found the groove
Look at early singing of Mukesh, Rafi, Kishore all copied
the original source in my opinion was K.L Saigal sahab(who incidentally sounded nasal in some of his popular songs). We are going back to roots?(I hope not my migranes dont handle nasal singers that well)

What makes good music?
Any sound or sounds in harmony is music. Good music is that which pleases your ear drums. What is good to me may not be intersting to you. I like any good music though I like tunes based on light classical music more, such as composed by the legend Naushad, Madan Mohan, Ghulam Haider (Pakeeza) Vasant Desai, SD, Roshan (Na to Kaarvaan ki Talash hai) Khayyam, Shanker Jaikishan, Lakshmikant Pyarelal to name a few from yester years.

At the same time I like any present day tunes that are soothing to the year Starting from A.R.Rahman to Adnan Sami. I give high marks to Ismail Darbar. I am also found of Gazals and Qawwalies
Rafi and Lata are my favorite playback singers. I also like Saigal, Pankaj Mallik, Mannadey, Aasha, Suman Kalyanpur. Among the newer singers, Sonu is my favorite I never liked Kumar Shanu, Among Gazal singers Jagjeetsing, MehediHasan, Ghulam Ali, Beghum Akhtar are the top. Mr Sareg is wrong in saying that Rafi and Kishore copied earlier. Rafi came in KL Saigal's era when Mukesh was following the footsteps of him. Rafi broke the trend and started his own unique style which is copied even today.(Sonu Nigam) This form of singing lasts longer as proven by history. Rafi had a Robust, Powerful melodius voice which suited all heroes. He was the most versatile of all male playback singers as he could sing hot numbers like Aaja Aaja mai hoon pyar tera, Lay gayi dil gudiya Japanki or Qawwalies like Parda hai parda, or bhajans like Man tadapat, or the first ever Indian Rapp 'Affoo Khuda' from Jab Jab phool Khile,or Gazals like Raha gardishon mein hardam from Do Badan. Mannadey had an upperhand in classical singing but his voice was not for heroes, Mukesh later on cultivated his own style which was unique and very melodius. The draw back was his voice did not suit hero's and had limited options. But whatever he sang were all master pieces and gems. Same goes with Talat. Kishore had his own style and never copied anybody, had a robust voice. During this time barring a few composers like RD the others(Bhappi Lahiri) were below standerd and the compositions were lacking in quality and melody. And thus suddenly listeners, to quench their thirst for good music leaned towards Ghazals and that is when Jagjitsingh, Anoop Jalota etc came to the rescue and became popular.

I think a good singer should have a good control of their breathing techniques, they should also have an emotional depth that will bring their audiences' emotions alive...and of course, the most Important quality of all...Originality. 😊

A good singer should have ofcourse singing talent (Which makes someone singer basically), good attitude, respect to other musicians or singers, Patient. A good singer always think and believe he/she needs to more and more about music.

I think the most impt thing for a singer .. is to feel, love and enjoy his own singing.. tht will automatically make evry1 else like his singing..
Tht's wht i feel..
More than training,techniques,sur+taal.. u need to be emotinally involved in a particular song.
Coz no matter how good ur taal+sur, techniques training are, if u dun get the correct feelng and attitude.. everything else will be wasted..
