Furthermore, I think that it needs to be acknowledged that the singer is limited by the use of the song in the film, how it is picturised, the demands of the MD as well as the movie director and finally whom (the actor) the song is being sung for. On a reality show, the scale can be adjusted, the tempo can be adjusted, extra murkia can be added.... the possibilities are endless. I am particularly offended when someone who does not sing (like Salman Khan for example) says that the contestant should have sung it instead of the original singer. PLEASE -- if we know about the song at all, then it is because the original singer did a very good job on it and made it popular. Salman Khan has done this at least 3 times with Kavita K songs and it is silly to compare these up and coming singers to someone like Kavitaji. It is also not good for the contestants to be encouraged to indirectly disrespect elders -- is this the new parampara of India -- if so, I see a bleak future for Indian music.

This is exactly the problem I have but in an opposite way to which you have indicated . Respect should be given to talent irrespective of age and success. Instead people choose to respect the person singing, his age and many other factors which are irrelevant to singing. Every original singer was a beginner at some time and you cannot say for sure that these people won't reach the same levels. Respecting a person just because he has reached a certain stature is something I thoroughly abhor. Respecting his talent and experience is one thing but art is not limited by age. Little kids like Aishwarya and Anwesha are far superior to many adult singers.

@sushrutapandey, I just feel that that sort of comment -- better than the original -- is really the wrong kind of message to young singers. Why not adjust the language to something like -- "I enjoyed your spin/take/interpertation on this classic song" Why insult the original singer at all for the reasons I already stated?

As for Aishwarya and Anwesha -- they are really good. I had the good fortune of seeing Anwesha live the other day and she was really really good. But I am sure that she would be the first to agree that she has a long way to go to measure up to established singers -- firstly by trying to get established. From the brief encounter I had with her mother who seems to be a very modest, classy lady, I am guessing that Anwesha's upbringing will keep her modest even as she rises to be the next great female artist.

"Aapne Original se bethar gaaya"
I strongly disagree with that statement. The orginal can never be lower than another. They may sings JUST LIKE THE orginal, but never better. I feel that is too much of an exageration
And nobody has forgoten you CPR Didi =]
We all love you 🤗

See you are pre-deciding that saying something like that is an insult to the original singer. I just don't feel the need to give a different spin to it. I am pretty sure no original singer feels insecure because someone thinks some person sang it better than them.Because they KNOW that singing is a vast huge field where age/status has nothing to do with absolute talent. Similarly it is the duty of the singer be it original or upcoming to never become complacent but constantly grow because there is endless potential for improvement no matter what stage you are. By protecting original singers you are not doing them any justice either.

Personally for me, modesty has nothing to do with talent. Recognition of one's limitations keeps the desire for improvement and prevents stagnancy and so in that respect it's helpful that singers keep themselves grounded. Having said that, I do not think a talented singer should undersell themselves just because they are not established. The reason I say this is because success has a lot of additional baggage attached to it beyond pure talent.

Of course, new singer may be better sometimes,
there is no harm saying this, because original singer did his best at that time who did his work as advised by music directors otherwise that original singer could perhaps sing the song better than already recorded but it is not in hand of hired singer whereas in competitions, singer is free to do more hard work

It is very disgusting to hear when the judges say the contestant sang better the original singer or had I known you before, I would have the song sung by you. It is utter nonsense and now I ignore most of the comments by the judges.
It is even funnier when actors who come in the show praises the contestants just because they feel they have to.

THERE IS NOTHING DISGUSTING.
IT IS YOUR OPINION
I LIKE THOSE COMMENTS

THAT BOLLYWOOD SINGER HAS TO SING AS DIRECTED BY COMPOSERS, DIRECTORS
BUT WHEN SOMETHING GOOD LOOKING IS ADDED BY
SINGER IN COMPETITION, THEN, AUTOMATICALLY IT SPEAKS
FOR EXAMPLE: ALI SHER COULD ADD MORE POWER IN THE SONG

ROHAN IN CHHOTE USTAAD ADDED SOME HARKATEIN, THEN, RFAK SAID THAT HE LIKED THE PART OF ROHAN WHICH HE HIMSELF DID NOT DO

liking a particular part of a contestant's version and comparing it to the original is a whole different matter in itself.

When somebody is very happy with the performances, it is natural to say more than previous.
I also enjoyed the performance in the same way like judges.
You might not.
