Concluding that in last 50 years there hasn't been a single movie from Bombay/India which was worth winning any category in Oscar, is again a claim I dont agree to. Are you sure all the movies which won Oscar till now have been of phenomenally high standard. Is it possible that there are movies all over the world which are very good but were not nominated for one reason or the other.

Also those who understand K Jo et al are the only one producing movies in India/most of the Indian movies produced are crap/most of the India lives in slum, are free to have their opinion. I 'll not go out of way to change this. Honestly I am indifferent to what West says about our movies but it does hurt to see our people drooling about West awards.

o rly? well if India keeps on choosing mediocre bollywood flicks as their official entries then India won't win an award for another 50 years either..

Also, any movie maker can independantly submit their movies for consideration if they feel they are oscar worthy..

Amitabh Bachchan finds a company in Mani Ratnam.

Why should we care for the Oscars, asks Mani Ratnam

Acclaimed filmmaker Mani Ratnam doesn't care much about winning an Oscar as recognition of the Indian film industry.

"Why should we care about the Oscars, when they don't care about us? We have our own film culture, which is very rich," Ratnam told IANS on a visit here.

Ratnam was visiting Cinema Paradiso, the city's happening video library that boasts of a huge collection of world classics as well as contemporary films.

This was his first visit to Kolkata after the release of "Guru". And he got a rapturous welcome from the city where his film "Yuva" was based.

Talking about "Guru", he said, "Rumours are flying thick that the film is based on the life of an eminent Indian businessman. It's all useless talk. 'Guru' can be anyone's story."

"Guru" tells the story of an ambitious young villager (Abhishek Bachchan) who moves to Turkey and then to Mumbai to become one of the richest businessmen in the country, making many compromises on his way to success.

On his next venture, the Tamil filmmaker said: "I am working on the script of a film titled "Lajo". Kareena Kapoor will be playing the lead role in the film."

Referring to the changing scenario of Indian cinema, Ratnam noted: "The earlier difference between art films and commercial cinema has almost vanished. Now it's a mix of both."

While agreeing that a filmmaker has a social role to play, he added with great candour that a filmmaker was not a preacher. "Indian filmmakers can move from entertainment to more socially relevant issues only after the economic condition of the masses improves. Only then will they be in a mood to see socially relevant cinema."

Fantastic answers Mrs..Ackles...👏

Comparing Slumdog Millionaire nominated for GG or Oscar to TZP or Lagan would be an apple to orange comparison...Lagan was nominated for Intl Film catagory...When people don't watch Hollywood movies or Oscar awards they will not or don't understand different criterias..
If these well known legends of India don't appreciate receiving Oscars or GG awards than they should not submit their movies...No issues than...

Big B might be legend but now he has no scope for receiving any Oscars IMHO...he will say whatever...Sorry AB fans...
I just don't like unappreciative people out there....
I am Still happy for ARR to receive this honor and Congratulations to him.....👏 😃

This has gone too far. ARR deserved this award and the recognition. Just like one would say he deserved the Filmfare for Jodha Akhbar. Congratulate him and move on. No one can take his talent away from him, it doesn't matter where he's being recognized or by who, what matters is that his work truly deserves the appreciation that it has received.

And no doubt Hollywood is a bigger platform than Bollywood, hence the recognition being even more prestigious. And that's a fact, not any slave mindset that's talking.

My suggestion would be to let this go right here. Instead, if someone would share the soundtrack of Slumdog Millionaire, that would be more worthwhile.

thank you! I don't even see how it is a matter to discuss over. Ar Rahman is brillaint. If he got an award on a foreign platform it's something to be very proud of. Even if the award was won on a Chinese, or african platform I would see this as a good thing! I will still be excited
