Actually I am not in much of a favour for including 'many' versions of Ramayana; feel that its not quite possible to avoid contradictions.
I think the series 'Bharat ek khoj's Ramayana ' was one such attempt to include not only many versions of Ramayana, it also included sanskrit dramas like 'Pratima nataka ' by mahakavi Bhaasa and it also mentions that Bhaasa's play pre-dates Valmiki's version; not just these claims but they also showed MBH first and then Ramayana saying that the older nucleus of MBH is much ancient than Ramayana.
I too am hoping that one day somebody will make a 'perfect' Ramayana purely based on Valmiki's version 😍

Yep, Ananya & Chen2, by seconding Mr Superman, I actually meant his first point, not necessarily his 2nd or 3rd

Actually, as far as his 3rd point goes, it would be an interesting documentary to make on comparitive studies of the various Ramayans, which ones came when, and what sort of historical and religious weightage should be given to each.

And yeah, I think composite Ramayans are the worse ideas - while someone can take bits and pieces of several Ramayans, one can also take the ugly parts of all Ramayans and put them together.

I didn't say anything about 'composite Ramayana'. Where did that come from? 😕

Perhaps there is a misunderstanding here. I am not asking for a single narrative that combines elements from a wide variety of sources just for the sake of including them, resulting in a gigantic mess. I proposed a (preferably 1 hour weekly) combination of a documentary and anthology type of show where different versions of the story would be portrayed separately. The number of episodes used for each portrayal would vary depending upon the source material. For example: episode 1 might cover the "Dasaratha Jataka" completely since it is a short narrative. Episodes 15-25 might cover a Nepalese version and so on. Sometimes it maybe possible to cover more than version in the same episode. I would like the show to include scholars and academics from multiple disciplines to discuss these versions (sort of a commentary added to the narration) and talk about their anthropological, cultural and historical significances, the dates of the text, the authors of the texts, etc. It would be quite an extensive program. It would be even more interesting if the final portion of the series is dedicated to the various theories about the core events, the original historical events that inspired the story in later generations. The idea would be to discuss these versions and educate the viewers about them without making any religious judgments.

IMO "Bharat Ek Khoj" did not do this adequately. They tried to cram 5000 years of history into a mere 53 episodes. Obviously they could not focus on any one area for too long. I mean seriously, two episodes are not enough to even touch the surface of the cultural phenomenon that is the Ramayana. This is why I would like an entire series dedicated to the academics of the many versions of the Ramayana.

When I mentioned an adaptation of the Jain Ramayana that is precisely what I meant: a tv serial that adapts the story from purely Jain sources. There are variations within Jain sources of course just as there are in the Hindu sources and the writers would have to use their judgment when forming a cohesive narrative but that is a different issue altogether. I feel Jain mythology is unnecessarily overlooked in the world of mythological tv shows and movies.

The remaining versions would be better suited for the anthology show I described above. Except perhaps the Ramakien but to make a fully dedicated show for the Ramakien you'd need to involve Thailand. 😉

And yes, the remaining point was of course that I would like a faithful adaptation of the Valmiki text. No embellishments, no addition from other sources, no political correctness. 😊

I hope I made myself clear. 😃

Got ur point Kal El , thanks.
abt Bharat Ek Khoj, thats why I said it was one 'attempt' to present Ramayana ( and other things) which had included many versions, yes it has a lot of limitations.
All the best on ur wish-list 😃

You mean the Ananda Ramayan would be okay, if shown unadulterated?

I think a neat idea might be to have the Adhbhooth Ramayan shown wall to wall - you know, where Rama kills the lesser Ravan and Sita becomes Kali and kills the greater Ravan😆 - that one!
