You're really lucky Khalrika ji. You have inherited books where I spent half my time searching for them. I still don't have the full list of who wrote which Ramayan. 😭

Anyway, my quest, I think will never end. I'll continue hunting for books and websites.

Will be looking forward to learning more from you. 😛

Thank you so much for sharing with us so far.

Hey Vibs, no need to thank me. U know I am also learning with u guys. Despite having the books, well, I never realized what a treasure I had until I joined this forum. I will make a list of all the Ramayan resources I know and post it for u. Just give me the weekend. Since I spent so much time here on the forum today 😆 I better get back to my schedule tomorrow.

I have this other book (a really fat one) called Ramayan traditions in Asia. It talks of Ramayan traditions in Malaysia, Indonesia, and other places. I will post synopsis from this book for u (little by little please). I will also post some of the poetry from Janakiharan by Kumaradasa and also the synopsis from of the plays from the "The Lost Plays of Rama" for u if u want to read it.

You are so sweet Khalrika ji. 🤗

I have read bits of Ramayan from other countries but it is really different from the versions in India.

Take your time Khalrika ji. I can understand how hard it is to find time nowadays. I'll wait for your posts. I love researching the Ramayan.

Khalrika

You are blessed to have so many versions of the Ramayan at home. There was a couple of times several months ago that I went to the Vedanta Soc in SF (right now, I'm in India) to see what they had. There were no vanilla Valmiki versions, but they did have a RCM there, and in it, the Uttarkand there was that Kaagbhushandi story, and following that, in the appendix was something called the 'Luv-Kush kand'. For this reason, I used to think it was a part of RCM, until recently, Akhl pointed out to me that if it was in the appendix, it was probably written by someone else. (It had Lakshman tricking Sita by feigning illness, having her dismount from the chariot in the middle of the forest, then taking the chariot away and disappearing, without her having any clue that she was even abandoned, let alone why. I was appalled at how someone could write something that vile about Lakshman)

It is interesting to find out about these other versions. Just that I wish the Sagars would stick to the most known and popular ones.

Khalrika

Were there any snake stories in any of the versions you've read so far? Adhyatma Ramayan? Ananda Ramayan? Adbut Ramayan? Ramacharitas? Anywhere?

Same question - did Kush pick up a knowledge of herbs at 5 that enabled him to cure patients? Looks like the future maharaj would also be a great doctor Kush, according to the Sagars😆

Ananya

Pg 1 you mentioned Shanta. Which is the origin of the folk hatred for Shanta that had Shanta in Rama's household, and that too in such a high profile status that she could poison Rama's mind against Sita? And what would she have to gain by any of that - she was Rama's sister, far older to him if she was married b4 he was born, and wasn't going to become Maharani no matter what happened to Sita. Wouldn't being a rishis wife for so many thousands of years have made her immune to any of this? Or do folks just dream up this stuff after their evening bhang?

I too am going to suspect Ananda Ramayana whenever I see weirdass things in the serial from now on.

I had read that in Paula Richman's book "Many Ramayanas"
She writes about the folk songs being sung describing the jealousy between a sister n her brother's wife , they used Shanta and Sita as medium to express it.
I have seen a few movies where Shanta is prominently shown in Ramji's life after his cornonation. In those movies Shanta even suggests Ramji to marry again before Ashwamedha yajna which ofcourse Ramji denies it.
The south-east Asian versions are even more wacko than Ananda Ramayana, In some of which,
Ramji has 8000 wives🤪Lakshman having 16000!! even Hanuman is given a casanova image
Reading which will only makes us angry andput us off.

Thanks for the information Ananya.

And I agree with you regarding the other foreign versions of Ramayan. reading Reamker and Ramakien was quite an experience. I just read a gist of the story.
