Here's the story from another version of Ayyappa / Dharma Sastha.
Acc. to this, I'm guessing Samudra Manthan, Mohini deceiving Asuras, Durga killing Mahishasura etc. happen around the same time frame. Killing of Mahisha enrages his sister Mahishi who starts creating havoc due to her boon that she could be killed only by the offspring of Shiva & Vishnu. After these incidents occurs Shiva-Vishnu/Mohini union and as a result Dharma Sastha is born, who is brought up in Kailas under the eminent guidance of Shiva. When the atrocities of Mahishi are beyong control, Dharma Sastha fights her and kills her near the Alasa / Azutha river in kerala region.
It is said that Parasurama installs idols of Devi along the coast and Sastha along the eastern border of the kerala region on the ghats as the guardian deity of kerala. (Remember Kerala was formed by Parasurama!)
In this region is a brahmin by name Vijaya who is issueless and an ardent devotee of Dharma Sastha. He goes to various sages for a remedy, and finally lands up at Sabari's (of Ramayan) place. She gives him a pot and asks him to go in a northern direction from her hermitage and down the slope of the hill that leads to a rivulet. She asks him to fill water in the pot and bathe in it. Vijaya does as instructed and reaches the rivulet. As he fills the pot and is ready to pour the water over his head, the pot falls and breaks into pieces. He stands there not knowing what to do. Just then a boy appears from those pieces. Vijaya recognizes him as Lord Dharma Sastha and asks Him to be his child. The Lord promises to be so in Vijaya's next birth. This Vijaya is born as King Rajashekar of Pandalam who gets Ayyappa as his child. It is said that after the 12 years of his human life, Ayyappa merged into the Dharma Sastha idol already established there in Sabarimala.
This version also mentions that Dharma Sastha was under a curse to be in the human world for 12 years and thats why he was born as Manikandan/Ayyappa. But does not mention the curse.
This gives the connection between Sabari and the name Sabarimalai and also answers to the time frame of these incidents since Pandalam may have been a pretty recent past, when compared to Samudra Manthan and Mahishi... But still I wonder if Rama & Lakshmana had come all the way south till Kerala and again gone back to Kishkinda near Hampi, Karnataka.
