Its not about North or South nor it was a taboo. Marrying a slain husband's younger brother was an ancient vedic custom , even today in parts of Bihar and Orisa women marry their (late) husband's brother..
Also note that Ahalya, Draupadi and Kunti , who are also Pancha-Kanyas were not from south.

Oh didn't know it is still prevelant in certain parts of India.
But then, apart from Tara and Mandodari, the other three were not associated with their husband's brothers.
In case of Draupadi, she had married all of them at the same time, it was not a later development.
And Kunti & Ahalya were associated with the celestials.
So thats why something prompted me to think, a widow marrying the husband's younger brother prevailed in the south. But thanks for the clarification Ananya.

There are some versions of the Ramayan that mention Kaikeyi as the second queen. And some versions say that Bharat was the youngest of the four.
Also, I think that Sumitra and Kaikeyi did not have much difference in age and Kaushalya was much elder than the two.

I got a info abt Mandodari. But cant mention the text. It is said that fire of Ravan's pyre didnt extinguish till Mandodari was alive becoz of her Satitva power. She died as suhagan. Its only after her death the fire of pyre got extinguished. I m not sure whether she remmaried or not

I too had read this somewhere but do not remember the details. It was so long ago and the memory is too vague for me to give any proper details.
So many variations from the versions and the local folk tales. It becomes so difficult to trace the origin of all these stories.

Encircling Kausalya, three hundred fifty women, steadfast in their vow(of devotion to their husband), with their eyes reddened, went there slowly.

Read chapter 34 for more details

I referred to Sarg 34 (verses aren't given, just the sarg is summarized), and here's what it has:

[quote=""]Sarg 34 - Raajaa Vishwaamitra's Story

After sending his daughters with their husband, Raajaa Kushnaabh performed a Putreshti Yagya with the desire of a son. At that time Kushnaabh's father Brahmaa's Maanas Putra Kush said - "You will have a son named Gaadhi who will be religious like you." And he went to Brahm Lok,

After some time Kushnaabh had a son, named Gaadhi. He was very religious and knew justice. Hey Raam, I am the son of same Gaadhi, and I am born in Kaushik dynasty that is why people call me Kaushik too. I had an elder sister named Satyavatee who was married to Rishi Richeek. She always loved her husband very faithfully. Later she went to Swarg with her mortal body and flowed in the form of Kaushikee River on this earth. My sister went to Himaalaya from Swarg to do good of people, that is why I made Himaalaya my home and I live there happily with her. Then I came to this Aashram from there to do this Yagya, and by your grace I got the status of a Siddh. I told you the whole story of this place and mine, now the night has passed a long, so go and get some sleep." So all went to sleep.

The above section is Vishwamitra narrating his own story to Rama. In fact, by Sarg 17, all 4 brothers were born.

P.S. Where was it written that the 350 wives of Dasharath commited self-immolation, with the exception of the Kaushalya, Sumitra & Kaikeyi?šŸ˜•

@ Chandra - I guess you read the Bala kanda Sarga 34. Ananya referred to Ayodhya Kand, Sarga 34.šŸ˜‰
Vibs had mentioned that as per Kamba Ramayanam, all the other wives of Dasharatha commit Sati. I dont think the number is mentioned though.

It is described in the Kambaramayan. The wives of Dasharath except the 3 queens committed self - immolation. Also, according to Kambaramayan, it was Shathrugan who performed Dashrath's last rites and not Bharat.
And yes, the number is not mentioned here. It is just given that they committed self - immolaiton and reached heaven.
