Another thing I've sometimes wondered - how did Ashkavati & Yudhajit react once they found out what Kaikeyi had done? Were they proud of her, or ashamed? Remember, one of the conditions on which Dasharath was allowed to marry Kaikeyi in the first place was that her son would be the successor to him on the throne. This wasn't a demand made by Kaikeyi, but by Ashkavati. Depending on how they reacted, it may or may not have made sense for Kaikeyi to return to Kekaya for good.
I also can see why you like the kinder, gentler version of their relationship, but remember - Rama's exile wasn't the only sin Kaikeyi was ever guilty of. During their marriage, after the incident with Shambara where Kaikeyi saved Dasharath from getting killed by manovering him out of there, she became Dasharath's favorite. Unlike Rama, who spread the love, Kaikeyi's way was to rub in that fact that she was the favorite, and deliberately disrespect and slight Kaushalya & Sumitra - something not shown in the serial. As a result, Kaushalya & Sumitra never had a happy marriage, and when they finally did enjoy Dasharath's last moments, it was too little too late. It's also in this latter context that Lakshman's fury at Kaikeyi when he learnt of the exile makes more sense - unlike Rama, he was not Kaikeyi's favorite, so he'd have noticed more closely the shabby treatment Kaushalya & Sumitra received at Kaikeyi's hand. For this reason, while Rama's magnanimity was admirable, the side effect of that was that Kaikeyi also got away scot free for her misbehavior towards Kaushalya & Sumitra.
Anyway, thanks for your observations.
Chandra, you are correct. The original version is more logical. I wish more people will have the courage to show Kaikeye for what she really was and I wish they will also show the raj Mahal politics with its various intrigues. I do not know why the producers of Ramayan chicken out and show everyone loving everyone else. Maybe, they got the purple dinosaur "Barney disease." You know, the I love you, you love me song which used to bug me no end. 😆😆😆 One of the reasons I never used to watch the kids channel with my son. 😆😆😆
Having said that, it is illogical, but I still like the Sagar interpretation of the relationship between the 3 queens and the politics in the raj mahal. I think it is wishful thinking for what should be instead of what really was.
