Chapter 20 The SaviorIn the morning, Aahil and Sanam bid farewells to Zayn and Aaliyah. After which, the two of them took a taxi which would take them to a bus stop. While inside the taxi, Sanam kept looking downward at her dupatta while Aahil looked at her with a sense of remorse in his eyes. I haven't even told her yet...that she's going back to her home, Aahil thought to himself. At least...she'll be happy...she'll be free then. When they reached the bus stop, the bus had already arrived. Aahil and Sanam began to board the bus while the bus driver asked, "To Maharastra?" Aahil nodded in response while Sanam was shocked. The two of them sat in the back. "I thought were going back to Bihar?" Sanam asked Aahil.
"I'll explain when we get there." Aahil said with a voice of pain. Sanam looked at Aahil, shocked as he looked away from her to the window.
After a few hours, it was evening time. The bus had dropped off everyone into Maharastra. From there, Aahil and Sanam took a taxi from the road where they headed into the rural ends of the land, the palace in the mountains. Sanam was surprised, seeing they had come back to her home. Once they reached the palace, Aahil and Sanam got out of the taxi. Sanam looked at the front of the palace, feeling nostalgic. Aahil was speaking on his cellphone, "We're here, Rehan."
"Okay. Aslam saab said you can leave once she gets here."
"Why?"
"He said something about wanting you to go downtown to meet one of his men for another job near that marketplace."
"You mean...I have to leave her from here?"
"Yes, Aahil bhai. I guess that's why Aslam saab had called me here earlier. I'll handle it."
"Oh...okay..."
Aahil then hung up. He turned around to Sanam who was looking at him surprised. "I don't get it...how come you brought me back here?" Sanam asked Aahil.
"My job is done, Sanam. My orders were to bring you back here. So I did."
"You mean...I'm free?"
"...Yes..."
"That means...I can see abbu again!"
Sanam turned around, ready to walk towards the palace. However, she stopped, feeling strange. Why do I feel like something is holding me back? Sanam asked herself. She shrugged her shoulders. As she was about to leave, she stopped and turned around to Aahil saying, "Thank you for understanding that I had to come home."
Aahil nodded, feeling grief. With that, Sanam left, heading into the palace on her own. Aahil felt a tear come down his face. He wiped it off in haste, putting his hand with great force on the taxi door. Aahil...why do you always expect so much?! She's gone now! Then why am I crying?! It's...it's over now! Aahil thought to himself.
Aahil got inside the taxi. He told the driver, "Take me to the marketplace." Now...its back to just doing your job, Aahil thought to himself.
Sanam entered inside the palace. She felt happy seeing her home again. As she entered the main hall, she saw Rehan standing near the throne. "Rehanji!" Sanam exclaimed. "You...here?"
"Aslam saab called me here...as well as you."
"Aslam saab?"
Just then, Aslam saab entered the hall, with Emperor Altaf behind him along with Aslam's men. Sanam became ecstatic upon seeing Emperor Altaf. "Abbu!" Sanam exclaimed. Before she could go to him, she was shocked to notice Emperor Altaf being handcuffed as he walked along with the other men. Even Rehan was surprised.
Aslam stopped, smirking at Sanam as his men held onto Emperor Altaf. "What is the meaning of this?! Why do you have my abbu in such a condition?!" Sanam asked Aslam saab.
"That's exactly why you're here," Aslam saab smirked. "Rehan, close the doors." Rehan nodded reluctantly and left the hall to do so. Aslam walked around Sanam, looking at her from head to toe. "You have a lot of love for your so called abbu, don't you?" Aslam asked Sanam.
"So called means what? He is my abbu!"
"Really? He's an amazing father figure to you?"
"He's my abbu...he took care of me all on his own. No man can be greater than that."
Aslam saab grinned evilly. He stood next to Emperor Altaf, holding a gun next to his head. Sanam became shocked. "Abbu!" Sanam cried.
"Its okay, Princess. It's okay." Aslam grinned. Just then, Rehan entered back to the hall, shocked to see Aslam holding a gun to Emperor Altaf's head. "Please don't hurt my abbu!" Sanam pleaded Aslam, holding her hands folded.
Aslam smirked, walking towards Sanam. "Okay...I won't hurt your 'abbu'...if...you follow my conditions." Aslam told Sanam. Sanam looked at Aslam questionably, "What conditions?"
"Your abbu can be saved...if and only if...you agree...to marry me." Aslam said. Sanam gave a shocked look on her face with Rehan having the same reaction. Emperor Altaf became furious. "How dare you?! Aren't you ashamed of asking her such a disgusting question?!" Emperor Altaf asked Aslam in a fit of rage.
"Saab, what kind of a condition is this?!" Rehan asked Aslam.
"Silent! Your only job is to do as I tell, Rehan!" Aslam shouted.
Aslam walked closer to Sanam, who stood in fear. "It's simple, Sanam dearest. I could have easily killed both you and your 'abbu'. Then I can gain power easily...after all...I am the emperor's only brother." Aslam told Sanam.
Sanam became shocked even further when Aslam mentioned the word brother. She became disgusted. "But there's no fun in that...after all...I am in need of a queen to be by my side," Aslam smirked as he touched Sanam's hair and she moved away in disgust. "Its simple. You marry me...and your abbu is safe. Then everyone gets their side of the deal. Just say two words...qubool hai."
Sanam looked up at Aslam with rage in her eyes. Don't say yes, Sanam ! Emperor Altaf thought to himself. Aslam grinned, feeling his plans would work. Rehan became nervous at the situation. Just then, Sanam replied to Aslam's question by giving him a tight slap across the face. Aslam put his hand to his face, looking at Sanam with shock. "Qubool nahi hai...aur nahi kabhi hoga!" Sanam shouted. "You are a sick and vile man! Just by asking me such a question you have shown your true worth! You may be a don...but your lust for power shows you can do anything for it...even marry me! Chee! Its sick! You don't have any power over my abbu or me!"
"Well...you have made a big mistake then. So now...I'll reveal the truth. The truth about your so called abbu...," Aslam said. "You...are the adopted daughter of this man!" Sanam looked at Aslam with utter disbelief. She turned to Emperor Aslam with tears in her eyes. "I'm sorry, Sanam. I never told you the truth. You were just so little when your parents died in Bhopal. But that doesn't take away the love I had for you," Emperor Altaf told Sanam, crying. "You may have been adopted...but that doesn't mean you were any less of a real daughter to me." Sanam looked at Emperor Altaf, teary eyed. She stood aback in shock. "And that's where this sob story comes to an end. Men...you know what to do!" Aslam shouted. Some men went and grabbed hold of Sanam while she pleaded them to let her go but they got hold of her. "Please...I beg of you...don't do anything to him!" Sanam cried.
Rehan tried to go towards Aslam but some men had grabbed hold of him as well. Aslam stood next to Emperor Altaf from behind, holding onto his handcuffed arms. He had the gun pointed to him from the back of his head. He pulled the trigger and right then...Emperor Altaf was shot in the back of the head. Sanam and Rehan were shocked at what they had seen. A tear had gone down Emperor Altaf's face as he fell to the floor, dead. Blood had oozed from his head to the floor while tears bursted in Sanam's eyes. She felt helpless as the men held onto her. "Now the easy one is done. Now the fun one can start." Aslam smirked as he walked towards Sanam. Sanam tried to get out of the grasp of the men as Rehan had tried himself as well. "Hold her straight!" Aslam ordered the men holding Sanam. Aslam then went near the throne and took out a long wooden bat. He held the bat in front of Sanam's distraught face. "Here...you will now see the answer...to your slap." Aslam grinned evilly. Sanam was shocked, trembling in fear. Aslam beat Sanam on her head with the wooden stick while Rehan looked on in shock. The strike of the stick made Sanam pass out. "Good. Now that she's out...you can go ahead and do the next task," Aslam ordered the men. "Take her to the graveyard down the mountains. And then...you may bury her."
Rehan was shocked at what he was hearing. "She might not be dead yet. But this will give her a slow, painful one, " Aslam smirked. "After all, this is what she deserves for daring to defy Aslam. Now...take her away." The men took an unconscious Sanam out of the palace.
"How can you do this?! You've never tried to kill anyone in the years of loyalty me and Aahil had for you!" Rehan shouted at Aslam.
"Oh emotions...they are so easy to play with. Especially when you and that other boy were orphaned. And now that I've achieved what I needed to...I have no use for you," Aslam told Rehan. "As for Aahil, his chapter with the girl is done. She'll never even know she's dead. And he'll continue to work for me blindly trusting me. And you...you're as good as done. Take him to the dungeon!"
The men took Rehan away while Aslam stood in the hall, cackling at his victory. Rehan was locked in the dungeon cell, where two men stayed put to guard him. Rehan stood behind the cell bars, distraught. I can't let Sanam die! The only way to save her is to contact Aahil as he can get to her easier! Rehan thought to himself. But how can I do that...if the guards see me make a call, they'll take my phone away! Then what do I do?! Allah, please help me!
At the graveyard, the men had prepared a coffin for Sanam. They put Sanam inside the coffin, and began to dig a hole to bury her in. Once they finished digging, they closed the coffin and put it down in the hole. They shoveled the extra dirt over the coffin, completely covering it. Sanam laid, unconscious, buried down in the ground. The men left the shovels over the buried place and left quickly, leaving Sanam to await her slow death.
Rehan stood in his cell quietly behind both the guards. While they were both turned, he quickly knocked them both in their heads with both his fists. The force cause both the guards to pass out within a minute. I can call now! Quick! Rehan thought to himself. Rehan went to the corner of his cell, taking out his phone and dialing Aahil's number.
Aahil had just reached the marketplace. He stepped out of the taxi, and just then he received Rehan's call. He answered the call, "Yes, Rehan?"
"Aahil bhai...there's trouble!"
"Rehan, what is it? Sanam got to the palace safely, didn't she?"
"You have no idea what has happened! As much as I want to explain everything, I can't! We have limited time so I can only tell you this now!"
"What happened?!"
"Aslam saab ordered the men to bury Sanam in the graveyard!"
"WHAT?! NO!"
"Aahil, there's still time...even if they buried her, you can find her there as quick as possible!"
"What about you?!"
"Aslam has me in the dungeon! I'll try to escape and meet you at the graveyard! Just save her before its too late!"
Aahil quickly hung up the phone and immediately got back in the taxi. "Take me to the graveyard near here!" Aahil ordered the driver.
"What?!"
"No questions! Just take me there! Fast!"
The driver started the car and quickly drove the taxi out of the marketplace. Aahil kept urging the driver to go faster as they were on the road. Please Sanam...don't you dare die...I'm on my way! Aahil thought to himself. Within fifteen minutes, the driver had reached the graveyard. Aahil rushed out of the car, entering inside the graveyard. He ran towards every area, screaming "SANAM!" constantly. He looked everywhere, distraught upon not finding her. "SANAM WHERE ARE YOU?!" Aahil shouted in frustration. He continued to look around and then spotted the shovels. He went towards the area, moving the shovels and realizing he found where Sanam had been buried. Aahil quickly began to push dirt away as fast as possible. It took him a few minutes until his hand had felt the coffin door. He pushed some more dirt away to see the coffin. Aahil opened the coffin door, seeing Sanam's unconscious body. Aahil carried Sanam out of the coffin, laying her on the ground. He shook her hand vigurously, saying "Sanam, please wake up!" He put his ear near her heart, hearing her heart still beating. I can still hear her heart! Thank goodness...that means she's still alive! Aahil thought to himself. Just then, his phone rang. Aahil answered the call. "Hello?!"
"Aahil bhai, did you get there?!" Rehan asked Aahil.
"Yes I got Sanam out!"
"Okay! How is she?!"
"Her heart is still beating. She's just unconscious."
"I managed to escape! I'll get there and we'll head to the nearest clinic!"
"Get here quickly!"
Aahil hung up. He lifted Sanam off the ground, holding her in his arms. Thank Allah...she's still alive! Aahil thought to himself. I was already concerned about never seeing her again...but had I not come...that would have happened. Aahil began to walk slowly out of the graveyard, holding Sanam in his arms and looking at her at the same time.
As soon as Aahil reached the graveyard entrance with Sanam, Rehan had arrived from a taxi. He quickly went to Aahil. "How is she?" Rehan asked Aahil.
"She's breathing. Let's just go to the clinic quick!" Aahil told Rehan. Rehan nodded as he entered inside the taxi with Aahil following with Sanam. Inside the taxi, Aahil held onto Sanam as the driver took off. Everything will be okay now, Sanam, Aahil thought to himself.
