CHAPTER 2
Pain has an element of blank,
It cannot recollect
When it begun, or if there were,
A day when it was not.
"Sh Zoya, everything will be okay" said Asad even though he had no idea which everything' he was referring to. He led her to the swing and made her sit. They were in the park now. The park which had seen its fair share of the good and the bad in their lives. He stood behind her and gently swung her, hoping it would calm her down. And then she started talking.
"I'm not alone. But I'm not wanted Asad! I've lived all my life being shuttled around like a freaking ball, and I thought it was fate, but today I found out that it's a different kind of fate. I am an orphan not by will of god, Asad, but by the will of my parents. They are alive, Asad, as they have been for the past 22 years. They gave me away because they didn't want me. They gave me away because I'm a girl."
The swinging stopped, and within seconds, Asad was kneeling in front of her, on his both knees, and with his eyes full of tears, he couldn't help but ask "Zoya, what are you saying? How do you know? And honey don't cry, please" his voice broke. He couldn't digest it.
This happens in a lot in movies and books. It may not seem quite as devastating when you hear about it. But when it actually happens to you or to a person who matters so much to you, the reality of the situation sinks in and pushes you down with such a force that you may never be able to see the world with the same perspective.
"Rani Ma told me. She told me because it's time for her to go. She's old and she thought I should know this, she couldn't die with it. "
"ASADDD!!! I feel...I feel, so much and nothing at the same time. I just want to scream, curse, at this fate that has been offered to me. Why Asad? Why? Why didn't they even give me a chance?"
There was nothing he could say that would make her feel better. Anything would have only sounded patronizing. And in a situation like this, there is nothing anyone can say. There was nothing right about the deed her parents had committed and there was no way he could justify it, especially when he opposed it the most.
All he could do was be with her. And that is what he did
He stood up, raising her with him. His thumbs flicked across her cheeks, once, twice, many times, till all her tears had gone. His palms surrounded her small cheeks and cupping her face, with a burning intensity in his eyes, he said "I'm here. Always."
And he brought her to the haven of his arms, letting her rejoice in the warmth of care, letting her forget about the horrible past, letting her know that only this matters and nothing more.
"I'm going to find them." she whispered.
He stiffened at those words. But he had expected this. This was Zoya after all. The girl with the big heart and the never-ending questions. This would only give her pain. But he would be there to take it all away.
"I'm with you." He said and hugged her tighter.
She felt better, much better than she had felt all day. She would find her parents and ask them. Then she would tell them that she was better off without them. And she would have Asad with her. Her pillar of support. Her best-est friend.
Both of them travelled to Mumbai the very next day, with hope in their hearts and resolve in their eyes.
They caught a taxi and made way into the interior of the city. The marketplace.
And luck had it that Zoya spotted a panipuri stall on the left. She had to stop.
Food made Zoya ecstatic. She believed that everybody worked so hard, and at the end of the day it was to feed their stomachs. Some did that well, some didn't. Some could do it better but some didn't want to. And golguppa. If anyone made a food pyramid based on taste and satisfaction, she vowed to put golguppa on top. Especially if she had it after bugging Asad and earning a very irritated look from him. It made it taste much better.
Asad didn't have a choice. Some things never change and this was one of them. So he made way to the stall as Zoya eagerly gulped down her idea of heaven.
In the bargain, her frown and concern over finding about her parents disappeared and was replaced by a dimple wala smile. With a golguppa in her hand, juice dripping on her chin, she beamed at Asad, and all his irritation forgotten, he beamed back.
BOOM!! The place reverberated with an explosion. And suddenly, there were too many people, running, crying, wailing. And Zoya was nowhere to be found.
