CHAPTER 4
I'll be your mess, you be mine
That was the deal that we had signed
But now I'm alone in an empty room
Staring down immaculate doom
It was dark. Pitch dark. Except for the flashlights that flickered their way to the ground at intervals.
Her hands had been tied and her shoes were torn from the force of being dragged through. She was with ten odd people she guessed. Some two big guys, covered from head to toe with booming voices pushed them through the dark. It may have been the forest, because she could smell the mud, the decayed leaves and hear a rustle every time anyone moved. But she also knew that nobody could have been there except them. She was dead sure of that.
Tears were flowing out of her eyes. She couldn't stop them she had no idea how suddenly, in the midst of a bomb explosion, she had been kidnapped. And why would they do that. It didn't make any sense at all. She would have preferred to die. She felt lonely and disheartened. Where was Asad? Was he alright? Was he hurt? Every minute spent without the answers drove her crazy. And now she was kidnapped. By terrorists. What a life she led. It almost made her laugh.
"Oh dear god, please help me. Please let Asad be alright. I feel so helpless now and I have no idea what these people are doing to me. Stay with me god, and help me out." She prayed fervently.
She didn't know how for she had been walking but now they made her stop. They pushed their prey onto the ground. She saw a faint light coming from somewhere. And as they walked towards it, she realized it was a cave. She could hear the gurgling of water somewhere. Maybe there's a river somewhere nearby" she thought, her mind quickly formulating all the areas near Mumbai where a river or a lake could exist.
The party made their way inside.
"All off you now sit here and stay quiet. We will decide what to do with you once sahib arrives in the morning. So sit and wish you were dead, because tomorrow you'll be begging for it" said that big burly man. Only his eyes were visible, they were grey in shade and glittered like the bulbs of a cat, a striped one at that.
Zoya lay down, numb in shock." What if they kill me? What will I do? I have so much more to do in life. Oh god why are you doing this to me? What will Asad do?"
"No. I cannot die. I cannot leave my best friend alone. I have to do so much. God give me the strength to fight this. Give me the hope to live"
The internal conversation she was having with herself helped a little. She looked around to catch a glimpse of the others with her.
There were about 6 men and three other ladies. The guy next to her was scrawny and lean. She couldn't see any of their faces properly. A blinding pain passed through her shoulders which bore the difficulty of being pressed to the hard rock ground when her hands were tied so tightly.
Closing her eyes she thought about the life she had led so far. But all she could see now was Asad. It was true, she realized. The only constant thing in her life was Asad's presence. She remembered when she was 5, when they had first met. They had been close ever since and now, 22 she still had him. "What would he do if something happened to her? Was he alright?" These thoughts prodded her again.
She remembered that incident from when she was 15, when most of her friends had moved to different cities for studies, or for their parents. She had been crying the whole day.
PAST
"Stop behaving like such a girl Zoya" Asad said. "I am a girl Asad in case you forgot" she snapped back at him. He had then held out a box of her favorite chocolate and very sweetly said "come on Zoya, if they leave you and go, they should be crying, not you. They'll never find another Zoya!" and something about the way he said it and the box of chocolates of course, had warmed her heart up and in an instant, that twinkling smile of hers was back on her face. "I am an orphan Asad; I was born and my parents left me. It's time I get used to it right?' she asked meekly, as though fearing his answer. "I wish it was that easy Zo, but I'm sorry to say, you'll have to put up with me forever or even longer than that." Asad replied bumping his elbow with hers. "Do you mean it?" Zoya asked.
"Of course I do silly. And never forget that. Even if something happens and someone takes you away, I'll always come save you. I'll save you from the world. You only have to save yourself from me though." He joked as he finished.
"Thanks idiot." Saying so, she clutched his hand and they sat there eating the box of chocolates together.
PRESENT
"He will come. And we'll find answers together; after all it was a promise of a lifetime." Zoya told herself again before she felt her eyes drooping.
And needing something to hold on to, she remembered his gaze, those powerful eyes and the depths they led her too. Thinking of the warmth and the love she received in that memory, she dozed off into a dreamless slumber, probably the last ever peaceful one.
And on the far end of the space that divided two friends, Asad closed his eyes in worry, his mind fixing on the beautiful eyes he had gazed into a few hours ago, the same eyes that made his own tearful now. He would find her, and he would find her soon. He vowed to himself. And Asad Ahmed khan always keeps his word.
