Chapter 2

APPREHENSIONS

Zoya briskly walked in to the patients ward, stopped outside room no 509 and placed her tightly clenched fist on her beating heart.

'Stupid you! Stop beating like a drum. To hell with him and these vicious thoughts'

A nurse passing by stoped to look at her bizarrely. Zoya opened her eyes to find her gawking at her,

"What?" she asked.

The nurse shook her head and moved on shrugging. Zoya rolled her eyes.

'No one can mind his own big nose here.'

She entered the room to find him peacefully cuddled on the bunk; she neared him to straighten up the blanket. A while passed, she sighed yet again and tip-toed towards the window to slide it open. A mammoth gust of wind paved its way in, floating the lose strands of her hair neatly with it. She squeezed her hands in the pockets of her jacket; it was two-degrees below zero. In the place of the heavy rainfall was now snow- white crystals of snow; the first snow of the fall.

This wet and flakey weather didn't please her at all. She somehow couldn't like how everything suddenly goes undercover, taking away the life they have. Moreover, for her, life also went into cover in this season. It had so many unforgettable memories associated with it- memories she no longer wanted to keep inside but they had this mysterious knack of knowing when and how to overrun her.

As she stood there, her mind slowly started drifting back to the bookstore but thankfully his cough distracted her.

She twirled around immediately to find him struggling to get up. She hurried to his side to help him sit straight. He smiled weakly in return.

"When did you come?"

"Just now."

He tiredly bends down to place a soft kiss on her forehead where she desperately tries to hold back her tears.

"How do you feel?"

"Better."

"You're lying'"

H smiled. "Why do you ask when you know?"

She looked away in pain.

"Why did you do this to yourself?"

He coughs again.

"It had to happen'..I gave away my pill."

She closed her eyes, placing both her hands to cover her face. She knew he was referring to her as his pill. For a moment she cursed herself for leaving him in the first place but then she never actually wanted to leave him all alone, it was his wish only. She took his hand in hers and kissed its back.

"I am sorry dad-a(grandpa)! I wont let anything happen to you now. You have to regain all your health." She said firmly.

He sighed and rested his back with the back-support.

"Why are you being sorry? Its not your fault. It never was. Zoya my baby'you are a strong girl now. Stop giving yourself these false expectations. You and I know the truth. I have reached the age the good books of a man allow them to live."

"Stop saying that." She croaked.

"Be brave. You are strong enough to manage on your own. I have taught you hoe to face this world."

"But I don't want to live alone, at least not now."

"You don't want to make it difficult for me."

"Noh!" she gave up.

"Then promise me you wont shed a tear when I leave."

She looked up at him a little baffled,

"What kind of a promise is that?"

"I don't want this world to consider you weak now. I don't want them to take an advantage of you again." He pressed.

Something flashes in her eyes- a mixture of pain, rage and anxiety.

"Not this time!" she said bitterly.

"Then promise me."

"Promise." She nodded drinking in her tears.

The nurse entered with his dinner. Zoya made him eat it, laughing at the same old repeated jokes he cracked just to make her smile.

He dozed off after taking his medicines. Zoya gazed at his old wrinkled face. He didn't have any major disease; despite that his health worsened every day. The only thing the doctors couldn't cure was his old age, they couldn't stop the time from slipping by, and they could do nothing about the annoying tick-tock of the clock.

She strolled out of the room towards the medical counter to get the fresh stock of his medicines. On her way back her feet impulsively stopped moving hearing the cries of a woman. The voice was so clear in her mind. She could never forget this deceitful, double-dealing voice. Never. She instinctively stopped a nurse passing by.

"Excuse me sister''Who is there in the intense care?"

The nurse drilled his name in her ears.

Ayan hugged Dilshad who stood there completely drained out. Najma silently cried in a corner.

"Everything will be fine Mom." Ayan tried to calm down the lady.

"Asad my baby'.my life'..how did this happen to him?"

Ayan, himself broke, anxiety playing on his place, was putting up a brave face for his mom and sis. His all attempts of consoling her down were going in vein, the woman was nowhere near impeding her sobs. "" the doctor rushed out. Ayan jumped to his feet.

"Doctor how is he?"

Dilshad and Najma neared in too.

"Mr. Khan'. We have recovered the head injury, and the burns aren't too bad but he has lost too much blood and unfortunately we are facing a shortage of his blood group in the blood bank. I have signaled out for other hospitals and volunteers, but you see the weather outside, the roads are blocked'.we need to arrange it soon, or else it might be too late." He patted on his shoulder.

His coldness was stinging Ayan, who stood there helpless gaping at the doctor.

"I can volunteer'. I am O' negative." Zoya called out from behind, everyone shifted towards her.

Dilshad's crimson red half swollen eyes suddenly widen in shock. Ayan and Najma too stare in chaos, totally baffled to make any movement.

"You?" Dilshad yelled, "How can you give him blood? I will never let your dirty blood in my son."

Zoya clenched her fists; her expressions tensed; and she desperately tried to control her outburst but couldn't help it.

"Fine then'' wait for that moron to die here. My condolences in advance because I do wish he doesn't get the blood in time." She said through her clenched teeth, infuriating Dilshad to the soul, as she gasped hearing her astringent thoughts.

Zoya grumbled and turned away to stomp back to the patients ward.

"Come on mom'.think rationally for God's sake." Ayan growled at Dilshad.

The doctor stood there confuzzled, gaping at the old women, who just refused to save his sons life.

'Is he your son?' he wanted to ask but before he could he saw Ayan running after the girl.

"Zoya wait." Ayan stopped her. She didn't.

"Zoya please'." He tagged again, it was easy for him to match her pace.

"Please stop''ruko! We need you! Please save him. Save him please I beg you." He pleaded.

She rolled her eyes'

"Fine''.. but I have a condition'.." she said dryly.

"Condition?"

"Yes."

"What condition?"
