Chapter 7
Tanveer's curiosity aroused when she saw Asad stepping out of Zoya's bedroom. Jealousy could be seen in her eyes. Still ignorant of the reason of Asad's argument with Zoya, Tanveer decided to keep an eye on the two. She needed to find out why Zoya and Asad had a fight and what Asad was doing in her room [it was quite unusual].
Glancing out of her window, Zoya noticed that the sky was already aflame with the sunset.
As she was feeling bored, she decided to go for a stroll and the weather was also perfect for it. She was at sixes and sevens and her mind was becoming a tornado of perplexity thinking about Tanveer and Asad. She badly needed to relax herself.
Zoya looked for Dilshad and Najma around the house but no one was in sight, not even Tanveer. So she decided to leave without informing them, she'd anyway be getting back before night falls, she thought.
Wearing a daisy print dress, hair up in a ponytail, bottle of water in one hand and a pink cute straw hat in the other, she left, leaving behind a note which said:
"Hey Phoopi! I'm out for a stroll.I was bored stiff in my bedroom. Felt like going out for a while. No one was in sight so I left this note. Don't worry about me. I'll be back before dinner! ~Zoya~.
As Zoya walked out of the garden of the house towards the mountain behind Asad's house, her heart fluttered with joy as she enjoyed the fresh, crisp evening breeze. She breathed in the pleasant air. She was on cloud nine. She has never been happier than this before. The calm and serene atmosphere prevailing in the garden made her feel good.
She walked on and on for about half an hour until she reached the peak of the mountain, puffing and panting. Completely worn out, Zoya dropped on the floor with a gasp of utter exhaustion.
She gulped the remaining water which was left in the bottle and laid flat on the ground, thinking to herself:
"Allah Miyan! The stroll turned out to be much longer than what I had planned. The sky has already started to darken. What should I do now?.. umm.. I hope Mr. Khan won't reprimand me this time. I... I.. um should.. just call him up.. he..he'll surely..come..and..um.. Hey..WAIT!.. but I didn't even bring my phone with me! Oh no! What a disaster!"
In Asad's living room
Dilshad's hopes were crushed. If Zoya mentioned in her note that she would be back before dinner, she would have done so.. but..she hasn't come yet and it was nearly ten o'clock.
All kind of thoughts were racing through Dilshad's mind.
"Ammi, Don't worry! Asad Bhaijaan has gone in search of her. She'll be back safe and sound. Don't you trust Asad Bhaijaan?.. Please, don't be disheartened." Najma said, patting her monther's shoulder, comforting her.
"No.. I'm sure... I'm sure that... Zoya is in trouble ..somewhere... I...I...can...sen.sense it..",
Dilshad said.
On the road [11 pm]
"Miss Farooqui! I wonder where she is.. I hope she is.. fi..fin..e.. ",Tears welled up in Asad's eyes as the the vital minutes ticked by.
"Ya Allah! Where do I look for her now!? What if I don't get to her on time?.. what if...she..", a loud scream suddenly stopped him dead on his tracks.
It was that of a woman's.
"What was that? Zoya!? Was it Zoya?," Asad wondered.
He raced out of his car and stood in the middle of the deserted road which led to the mountain and cried at the top of his voice : " ZOyaaa! Zoyaa! It's you! ? Reply me! Zoyaaa!"
No response.
The eerie silence of the night increased his worries.
He then started to run like crazy in all directions, calling out to Zoya, hoping to hear from her.
On the rocky mountains
Everything was dark, so dark that Zoya couldn't even make out where her feet were leading her to. Moreover she was feeling really cold, her dress being short.
"Allah Miyan, help me find the way to go home", Zoya prayed.
Heart pounding in her chest, Zoya kept her feet moving, in the hope of going towards the right way.
Suddenly, she felt a hand on her shoulders. Someone was behind her. A ghost.
As fear thrilled through Zoya's veins, she buried her head in her hands and started weeping.
She was rooted to the spot and couldn't think of moving even an inch.
