Part 1:
"Hmmm! Looks like we are in for a feast today." Exclaimed her father as he entered the kitchen taking in the aroma of freshly cooked meal on the dining table.
"Zoe's a really good cook! Isn't she Baba? Her Majazi khuda-to-be (husband) would be really happy with her as they say. The shortest way to a man's heart is via his stomach." Her elder brother, Hammad teased her.
"Not at all! I don't cook for every Tom, Dick and Harry! Such special meals require a special occasion and special people as well." Replied an aggitated Zoya.
Hammad: "Oh that we will see. I am happy to be the special one. Please enlighten me regarding the special occasion part."
Zoya: "Oh yes we will see. No you are not the special one. So much for your sheer credulity. The special ones here are Ammi and Baba. The special occasion is... No I am not going to announce it just like that. Hamza go and call Ammi."
Hamza, her younger brother, who was just entering the kitchen turned back on his heals to call their mother.
As soon as she entered the kitchen, Ammi was horrified to see her usually orderly kitchen completely topsy turvy.
Ammi: "What have you done Zoe!"
Zoya: "Cooked Ammi! I mean I have cooked the dinner Ammi."
She gulped and replied, knowning well where this was leading.
Ammi: "HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO TELL YOU TO CLEAN THE KITCHEN AFTER YOU ARE DONE. THANK GOD YOU SELDOM ENTER HERE. YOU SPEND A DAY HERE AND IT TAKES ME THE WHOLE WEEK TO CLEAN UP THE MESS YOU HAVE CREATED."
Baba: "Oho Sarah, why are you scolding my little princess. Look she has cooked such a tasty meal."
As usual, Baba tried to save her from Ammi's wrath.
"Something another cook in our house never manages to do." He added as he couldn't help teasing Sarah.
Ammi: "Princess! Its you who has completely spoiled her. When she gets married everyone is going to point fingers at me that her mother couldn't teach her anything. How dare you question my culinary skills! Its me from whom she has learned everything."
Hammad: "Ammi your statements are contradictory!"
As soon as she heard this she fumed while the rest of them burst out laughing.
Zoya: "Look dinner is getting cold. Why don't we just settle down first."
As they sat around the dining table Zoya unable to contain her excitement any longer exclaimed.
"I got accepted at KEMC!"
Her father's face burst with pride as he said
"I knew my bright daughter would make me proud!"
One sentence of approval from her Baba and all her sleepless nights that she had spent preparing for the entrance test got repaid for.
"Hamza learn something from your sister instead of following your good for nothing brother's footsteps."
"Now you are being unfair to my son Zubair. He is not good for nothing. He is a genius just like his mother" Sarah disapprovingly replied her husband.
Baba: "Oh yes, exactly like his mother."
Ammi: "Thank God he is not like his father who is so fond of his pot-belly that he can't even consider walking a mile daily."
Baba: "Don't you dare say anything about my Afseri-pait!"
"Allah Miyan what's wrong with these two!" wondered Zoya but she as well as her brothers were well aware that their parents' bickering knew no end so they just sat back, relaxed and enjoyed the show.
They had just started dinner when the doorbell rang.
Baba: "Hammad go and see who is at the door."
As he opened the door, a bulky old man with an equally bulky lady walked in followed by four meek girls and a dark-complexioned, short height-ed young man.
Hammad headed back to the kitchen, his mood completely spoiled, to inform the rest of the family about their "guests".
Zoya came out of the dining hall cum kitchen and asked "Who's there?"
Hammad: "Tmhare susrali" (your in-laws)
Zoya: "Oh shut-up. Baba Uncle Guddu is here with his family."
Sarah was annoyed. Why did these people have to spoil all of their happy family moments!
Gul Sher more commonly known as Guddu was Zubair's cousin brother whom he was very fond of. Guddu's parents had brought him up after his parents' death. For this Zubair respected and loved Guddu like a real brother. Guddu and his big-mouthed wife often hinted at strengthening their relationship by getting their son Akram and Zoya married. What they were actually interested in was Zubair's wealth.
Ever since Sarah had married Zubair she had seen these two clinging to him like parasites for one reason or another. Many a times Zubair had to face the police for Guddu's "mischievous" activities. For this very reason she hated them more than anything. Her children were no different but they kept quiet for their father's sake.
Guddu: "Assalamualikum Zubair bhai jaan! Haseena was saying it has been so long since we last met so I said why not have dinner with you people tonight."
Sarah: "Wallaikumusalam! Guddu bhai you should have at least called before coming so that we could prepare something special for you just like day before yesterday."
Haseena greedily eyed the chicken biryani on the dining table and exclaimed. "This biryani would do just fine"
All of them quickly sat around the dining table leaving no room for Sarah and her children. They quietly left the dining room not wanting to create a scene in front of Zubair.
Zubair: "Guddu bhai Zoe got accepted at KEMC."
Guddu: "Thats good. This biryani is so good. Sarah bhabi does have magic in her hands."
Haseena: "Yes and she needs to teach some of it to her daughter as well for future's sake. By the way why does she even need to attend college. After all she just has to look after the house after getting married. That is what all shareef girls do."
Zubair: "This is her dream and I don't find anything wrong with it bhabi. I am happy you liked the biryani. Actually Zoe has cooked this."
Haseena: "Ok ok, Can you please pass me the dish Guddu?"
Later that night Zoya discussed everything she needed to buy for her new college with her mother. They planned to go shopping the next day. She made Baba promise to buy her a present as a reward for getting into the most prestigious medical institution of the country. Hammad kept teasing her for being a nerd and they fought like little kids. As a result, Hammad was grounded for the next week. Zoya being her father's favorite was spared as usual. She couldn't be happier.
