All you loved ones, its my best friend's Bday and here is a treat for you all too in the form of this quick update.
Love Jerry
After everyone had gone to sleep Zoya got out of the girl's tent and went to sit on a cliff nearby. She was enjoying the calm and quite clean atmosphere which was so unlike the busy noisy Mumbai when somebody startled her by placing his hand on her shoulder.
Part 9:
"Relax! It's me Asad."
He spoke calmly and sat down beside her.
Z: "You could have just called out instead of scaring the daylights out of me."
A: "Its night but I got the point. You got scared. Surprising! The lioness got scared. By the way what are you doing here at this time of the night?"
Z: "Anybody could have gotten scared by what you did. I was thinking of the best way to kill you."
A: "You normally get very murderous thoughts. Don't you? It would be such a great loss to the world if you killed the perfect gentleman."
Z: "Who the hell called you the perfect gentleman?"
A: "You did. By the way why do you think I am perfect when I clearly am not?"
Z: "Why do you think you are not? You are the perfect brother to Najma, perfect son to Ammi and Baba, perfect big brother for Hamza to look up to and the perfect frenemy to Hammad. You are perfect at almost everything you do."
A: "And to you?"
Z: "Well you are a good friend if not the best but you are fast climbing the charts."
A: "So much sweetness all in one go! Stop it yar. Was the plan to kill me with Diabetes?"
Z: "Hahaha no. Since you have done so much inquiry about something I said without even thinking, it's my turn now."
A: "Your turn for what?"
Z: "When I asked you about trust you said my name."
A: "So."
Z: "So?"
A: "You don't like the fact that I trust you."
Z: "I don't think you trust me."
A: "And why is that so?"
Z: "There are certain things you never tell me even when I ask you."
A: "Like what?"
Z: "Why did you speak so harshly with that man at college? The one who had come to give some envelope? What was in it?"
Asad took a deep breath, sighed and replied.
"My father had sent him. I don't get along with him quite well and I don't want to talk about him at all. Some other day, I will tell you but not today. Please don't push it."
Z: "Okay. This place is so beautiful."
A: "Yah. Hey what was that stuff regarding marriage and future Ishan was talking about?"
Z: "Nothing."
A: "I know that nothing. This nothing is not nothing. It's usually big something. Najma also says nothing when its big something."
Z: "Allah Miyan! What's wrong with you? You confused me with that something nothing stuff."
A: "Don't try to change the topic."
Zoya contemplated telling him about Akram but then decided against it.
"I love my family way too much to ever leave them. That's it."
A: "So you can get married to someone who lives close by or someone who would happily live at your house."
Z: "You mean as a ghar-jamai sort of thing."
A: "Yah."
"That buffoon Akram won't have a problem with this condition at all." Zoya thought to herself.
Z: "Nah. Tell me something else. Searching for such a guy would be a big problem."
A: "Don't get married at all."
Z: "Next."
A: "Marry one of the servants at your house. They already live there."
Z: "Next. At least give a workable solution."
A: "Nowadays this soyamwer idea is quite in. We will stick to the ghar-jamai condition and have a soyemwer for you."
Z: "Not bad."
They kept talking for a long time. Asad was really tired from the whole day's work and Zoya was feeling sleepy so they went back to their respective tents.
Zoya got up before sun-rise and walked to the stream near their camp. To her surprise Asad was already there. He looked really funny as he tried putting his hand into the water and quickly pulling it back the next second.
Z: "What are you trying to do?"
A: "What are you doing here?"
Z: "I came to perform wuzu."
(Wuzu is cleaning up Muslims do before offering prayers. For more info. Google is your best friend.)
A: "No chance. The water is way too cold. I have been trying for about 10 minutes."
Z: "So let's heat it. I will bring a vessel."
Zoya went in and brought a vessel to heat the water. Then they collected wood together. Asad brought the match-box. When he opened it, to their dismay there was only one match-stick. He lighted it up and tried to set fire to the wood planks but it went out.
Z: "What should we do now?"
Asad thought about a moment and said.
"When will Zain come in handy?"
Z: "How can he be of any help?"
A: "He smokes. He must have a lighter. Wait, let me check."
He went in and after some time came out with Zain's lighter in his hand. He set fire to the wood and they waited for the water to get warm.
After it was sufficiently warm Asad picked up the vessel. Zoya said behind him.
"I want to have a go first."
A: "You are the boss ma'am!"
He helped her perform wuzu.
Z: "Don't be a miser. At least put enough water on my hands so that they become wet."
A: "The water will finish. I have to perform wuzu too."
Z: "The water is not going anywhere. We can heat more for you."
A: "Okay."
When Zoya was done, they went to the stream again, filled up the vessel and came back. As Asad put the vessel on their makeshift stove, Zoya started to feel restless. Her arms, face and feet were all wet so she was feeling cold.
Z: "Done."
A: "It's not even warm yet."
Z: "Cm'on it's bearable."
A: "Fine."
When Zoya poured water onto his hands, he winced and said.
"It's still cold."
Z: "Be a man. Don't be sissy."
A: "Making yourself comfortable is not being sissy."
Z: "Whatever."
When Asad was done washing his feet, there was still some water left in the vessel. He was bent downwards as he held his foot in his hand. Zoya studied him for a moment and then looked into the vessel. Her face clearly spelt mischief as she bent over closer to him and emptied it on his head. Asad gave out a loud cry as cold water hit his neck.
"ZO-YA"
Zoya laughed and tried to run away. He grabbed the vessel from her hand, quickly filled it with cold water from the stream and ran after her. As soon as she passed the entrance of the boy's tent Zain walked out. By this time Asad had already pushed the vessel towards her. As a result the cold water ended up falling on Zain.
"What the f**k!"
Zoya stopped and turned to look what had happened. Zain stood there with murderous expressions on his face, completely drenched and Asad stood still with the vessel in his hand. As soon as Zoya's eyes met Asad's, both of them burst out laughing.
Zain: "I came out to check what the noise was about, not to take a bath."
Asad: "No problem. Taking a bath sometimes doesn't hurt. It cleans you."
Zain: "Shut up. I take bath daily. I am feeling so cold now. Idiot."
Zoya: "Zain now that you have woken up by mistake, don't go to sleep without offering Fajr prayer."
As she said this Asad and Zoya again burst out laughing. Zain snatched the vessel from Asad's hand and huffed towards the stream. Sensing his plan, they both made a run for dear life.
The next morning, Asad and Zain were giving vaccination shots to little kids when a five year old kid started crying in the loudest possible voice. Zoya, who was passing by came close and asked him.
"What is wrong?"
The little boy answered.
"I am not ill and I am not a bad boy. Why are they giving me an injection then?"
Zoya bent down in front of him and settled on her knees. She held him by his shoulders and said
"There is a guy with a gun and then there is a guy who has no gun. A big bear attacks them one by one. Who will be able to beat the bear better?"
"The guy with the gun."
The little boy answered.
"The guy with the gun would beat the bear in no time and the poor fellow who was too afraid to pick up the gun won't be able to. Isn't it?"
"Yes."
He answered meekly.
"But I don't want an injection. I am not a bad boy."
"You are a very good boy. You know what bad guys enter our body too and if they win, they make us ill. There are small guns in this medicine they are giving you. If you take it you will be the strong guy with the gun. You are a big, brave boy. Aren't you?"
"Yes."
"And you are not afraid to beat the bad guys. Right?"
"Yes."
"Then you will have an injection. Okay."
Asad moved towards the boy Zoya was talking to and sat on a stool beside him.
"Don't look at him. Look at me and tell me how many fingers are these?"
Zoya told him.
"Four" he answered.
"And these"
"Three"
"Done" Asad said.
"Done? But I didn't feel anything."
"You are a good boy na. That is why." Zoya told him.
The boy ran out and came back with a flower in his hand.
"This is for you. Thank you."
Zain saw this and came near Zoya.
"Looks like you are quite popular among boys."
He commented.
Asad who was sitting close by answered.
"Looks like you need another cleaning session."
He made a face at Asad and walked back to his own seat.
"Asad don't rile him up so much. I think he is a nice guy."
Zoya said to Asad.
"You don't know him! And he has been hitting on you ever since we came here."
Z: "No he is not. He is just being nice. Jokes are one thing but please keep the atmosphere peaceful. I don't want a fight here that too just because you are being an ass to him."
A: "I am not and I wonder whose choice of words uncle needs to know about now."
At that moment Ishan peeped in and said
"Zoya Dr. Ashutosh is calling you."
In the afternoon, Asad and Zain came down to their tent to rest for a while. Zain moved about searching for something. After some time he asked Asad.
"Have you seen my lighter around here somewhere."
A: "I have seen it around here a number of times."
Z: "Idiot! I mean where did you last see it? Do you remember?"
A: "Let me think! Ummm… errr…o yah!"
Z: "Where?"
A: "We took it in the morning to light up wood to heat water. I guess Zoya has it."
Z: "Are you sure?"
A: "Why would I tell you if I am not?"
Z: "Did you tell her, I smoke?"
A: "Why? You don't want your impression on her to get spoiled."
Z: "You dog. You told her. Right?"
A: "Go ask her yourself. Maybe I didn't."
As soon as Zain went out of the tent Asad laughed evilly and said
"Or maybe I did. Have fun impressing her baby."
He took out Zain's lighter from his pocket tossed it in the air, catched it and placed beside his pillow.
He saw Zoya coming out of her own tent and walked up to her.
"Hey Zoya! Have you seen Amaan's lighter somewhere? Asad said you took it in the morning. He is looking for it."
Zoya: "Amaan's? I don't have any lighter. Why are you looking for it when Amaan is up there with Dr. Sapna?"
Zain: "He is… err… he asked me to actually."
Zoya: "But when did he ask you? I came back after you did and I was with him a few minutes ago. Asad had a lighter but he said it was yours."
Zain: "He did?"
Zoya: "Why do I have a feeling that you are lying? The lighter was yours after-all. Wasn't it?"
Zain: "Err I… actually…"
Zoya: "You smoke. Don't you? I can tell by looking at your lips."
Zain: "Not much. Just sometimes."
Zoya: "Yuck! You are becoming a doctor and you do that to your body even after knowing the hazards. You know it's a sin to harm yourself deliberately. Go ask Asad. He had it in the morning."
With that she walked away while Zain kept standing there cursing Asad.
Zain barged in the tent and walked angrily to Asad who was casually laying and said
"She doesn't have it."
Asad: "Then check your stuff again. Maybe it's there."
Zain: "No its not. You have it."
Asad: "No I don't. Oh look! It's by your pillow."
Zain: "You did this on purpose. Didn't you? To spoil my image."
Asad: "Why would I need to spoil your image when it is already not good."
Zain: "Listen! I am warning you! Just don't mess up with me or you don't know me."
Asad: "Dude calm down. Why are you getting all worked up? Just calm down and here take your cigarette."
Zain took the box from his hand and opened it. Small twigs were there instead of the cigarettes.
Zain: "Asad! What the f**k man!"
Asad: "Your sweet darling would want you to quit smoking. I thought it would be even better if you get closer to Mother Nature."
Zain: "I won't spare you for this. I am telling you. I haven't forgotten the morning incident as well."
He walked out of the tent angrily.
"Just wait and watch Asad Ahmed Khan. I will make your stay here a living hell. You are messing up with the wrong person."
