Chapter21
In the morning Yash awoke first he yawned and stretched his arms rubbed his eyes and thought man I had a good sleep I am feeling so alive this morning OMG it has been years since I felt this good stretched him arms again this time making contact with something soft he got surprised turn his head a found it h.ad landed on his new wife's breast he quickly removed his hand thinking wow she is beautiful even in sleep he continued looking at her wanting to remove a lock of her hair that came on her beautiful face. Yash completely forgot his routine of looking at Aripta's picture first thing in the morning.
Aarti was slowly waking up she felt so comfortable and snuggly in bed that it seemed a crime to get up she had not felt like this since way back when she was a kid and was on her one and only holiday with her best friend Aaman and his family.
Then she felt it the touch on her breast first she taught it was Ansh rolling on her then the strange sensation she felt a tingling feeling that made her hair stand and her nipples hard her eyes flew open and she saw her new husband watching her they both got surprise at her sudden action and sat up together.
Aarti felt embarrassed she turned away and said Morning Yash ji I will check on the children."
Yash realizes she was shy and said "Good morning Aarti how do you sleep< I hope you were comfortable in this new surroundings" he tried to ease the tension
"Yes I slept like a baby and speaking of babies I should really go and check on our babies can you show me the way after I come from the washroom"
"Sure" smiled Yash who went to the adjoining terrace and did some stretches while waiting for Aarti the garden looked so brilliant so full of life with the birds and butterflies. Yash self talk Maji has the gardeners doing a good job with the garden but I will suggest that we add some jasmine it will add an even better fragrance to the garden.
Before Aarti could leave the room the three little people found their way into their parents room "Papa!! Papa!! Papa!! " They knocked the door "Papa let us in" they laughed
Yash opened the door and the three rushed for the bed "WOW!! Papa you bed is messy how so you always have everything so neat!" the girls asked and begun jumping on the bed
"Stop it you know papa don't like you jumping on the bed" said Yash "and young man where is you clothes"
Aarti came out and saw the commotion "Yash ji Ansh strips during the night he feels so warm and more comfortable in his underwear I have told him many time to keep his pyjamas on but he never listens" she answered looking at her new husband if he was angry at Ansh.
Yash looked at her and took Ansh in his lap "Champ you are an older brother now you have two younger sisters, you have to sleep with your pjs on you don't want them teasing you about you cute belly, strong legs and arms" He said tickling Ansh belly "An we will turn the Ac up if you feel warm okay.
"Okay papa that why you are wearing your pjs so mama won't tease you" innocently said Ansh
"Yes she might get jealous at my strong arms" and Yash proceeded to flex his muscular arm and the kids laughed and played with him
Aarti stood watching the happy scene of father and kids enjoying together. Yash stole a look at her she really is beautiful "Aarti you have to get ready for the mornings post wedding rituals hurry I will see to the kids" he smiled taking the three kids who were hanging onto him like little monkeys Aarti thought thank god Yash ji is a strong man laughing at the four of them leaving the room.
Gayatri and Vidhi had just completed their morning prays and was walking around smoking the house offering arti to the guests who were up early. They saw Prateek leaving the kitchen with a tray filled with teapot and fixings for tea he was still in his night wear heading for his bedroom G3 heard the ladies with her laugh and talk "hen picked husband already catering to his wife's needs G3 lost her son hahahaha!" then they heard and saw Yash hustling the kids to bathe quickly he had Ansh in the room and he was happily dressing the little boy who was telling his papa some jokes. The ladies again said "wow G3 Yash is taking care of the children you told he never helped before even when Artipt bahu was alive Wow! New Aripta bahu has him trained in only a few hours Hahahahahaha!! The ladies continued G3 was so angry but she covered saying it's time for the rituals Vidhi get Aripta bahu out front for the first ritual with the toolsie tree, I will call Paradhi bahu.
Paradhi was nowhere close to being ready she was drinking her tea and Prateek was staring lovingly at her G3 "Paradhi bahu are you ready it's time to start the rituals" "Coming mummy ji just putting on my saree." She lied
Aarti was dressed and on her way to meet Yash and the kids when she met Vidhi "Aarti you are ready come let's go fast before mummy ji blows a fuse" she smiled "Bahabi I want to check on Yash and the children first please" she had such a sweet pleading look that Vidhi agreed plus she suspected that Paridhi needed some extra time to get ready "Okay for five minutes only"
Yash was trying to get the girls dressed but they wanted to play hide and seek with him hiding their clothes both the ladies stood at the door way admiring father and kids Vidhi said to Aarti "Yash looks so happy and free he never helped the girls before it was just mummy ji, buaji or I would get them ready you are the reason for this change for the better Aarti "and she hugged and kissed a surprise Aarti "thank you now let's hurry up before our saas have a stroke.
The first went well Vidhi and Aarti having to explain and show everything to Paradhi the relatives complained "Morden bahu don't knows nothing about tradition hahaha!!' G3 was again embarrassed and hurt by Prateek's choice for a bride.
When they entered the kitchen for the second ritual they found the kids having milk shakes and puris both Yash and Prateek were in the kitchen "what is going on here why are you here??" asked G3 "Ma we are making breakfast for the kids "answered Yash who was drinking a glass of juice Prateek asked "puri ma" well if looks could of kill G3 two sons would have been dead especially when she heard her relatives snicker and said they are goners hen pecked. Even her maji was enjoying seeing her grand sons in the kitchen "Beta I want some coffee and I am sure some of the ladies here too won't mind a cup or may be some tea" "Maji what are you saying the rituals aren't over a yet" said a shocked G3 " G3 your youngest bahu already had her bed tea served by her husband I am old and can't take hunger for too long Prateek beta some of your puris too beta then we can continue the servants have they not papered breakfast if not and we have to wait on the new bahus I might faint from low sugar and there are others here who needs to take their medication " said G3's mother. "Go ahead with your Pooja don't mind me
Aarti and Paridhi did their ritual Pari following Aarti's lead with Vidhi's help "dadaiji why are they praying to the stove" asked palak "So that the family remains healthy and prosperous the mother is the one in the family who cooks, cleans, and take care of the family that is her job her responsibility the kitchen is her office, the stove is her computer her desk. So she gives thanks to god for this special gift to keep her family happy, healthy and together through her food that she prepares with lots of love." G3 explained {people forgive me I have no idea why this ritual is done so I came up with something]
Then the new bahus made their sweet dish to complete the ritual Paridhi following Aarti's lead with gestures from Vidhi and encouraging smiles from Aarti.
At the breakfast all were gathered G3 told Vidhi to sit down and eat now there are two new younger bahus to serve them she should allow them to do all the work from now, but Vidhi said no they are all the bahus of this house and they will work together. Ansh came and sat next to his taju ji Pankaj love having the little boy there and begun feeding him G3 was angry she wanted him to wait an eat with his mom after the rituals were completed Yash said "then it is only fair that Palak, Payal, Vedant and Vedicka wait and eat after the adults eat go children you will all eat with you moms and Paridhi chichi." Vidhi said "Yash Bhayia is right kids go wait in the kitchen I will come soon" and the five went to the kitchen. G3's blood pressure was on a rise how dare Vidhi behave like that and answer me back. Time for the sweet dish G3 commanded Aarti to serve Yash and don't allow even a drop to spill out Yash loves everything clean, neat, and in place Aarti give him a small bowl and then she served the rest of the family Paridhi give Prateek first then the rest of the family SP give both his bahus gifts followed by the rest of the family Paridhi watched the difference in the gifts and the money they received until one lady explained that it is her first marriage so you will receive the bigger better gifts, and more money but this is Aarti second marriage so she get the gifts of the second wife as all had given Arpita bahu the first wife who they all loved and approved off the better gifts.
Yash was angry and wanted to tell those ladies off but his father give him a look and shook his head, Aarti was not in the least bothered because she expected this type of behaviour from them. In her life she had met people like them before so not surprised at all.
After breakfast G3 instructed the bahus to do the cleaning of the breakfast dishes Yash stood up and said "No we have servants they will do that, Aarti and Paridhi have not eaten as yet so it is not fair that they should continue to work, also the kids are waiting for them."
Pankaj said to his brothers " I never understood before how unjust ma was before when it was just Vidhi and Aripta I always thought that because Vidhi is the eldest that is why she had all the work to do that it was her responsibility not realizing that ma always favoured Aripta against her."
"Bhayia now all that will change with my Aarti's help I am confident that they will work together and teach Paridhi all she need to know and I get to spend time with my kids I had fun this morning I think I will help them get dressed every day" Yash said smiling
"And when will you go for jogging and exercise" asked Prateek "well I just have to wake up and hour earlier " Yash replied. "Ma will not like that" said Prateek "just like she don't like you serving Paridhi bed tea" teased Pankaj.
SP "My boys are enjoying themselves some of the relatives are leaving for home after lunch go with them to the train station okay boys, Yash try and don't annoy your mother too much you know how she is it is difficult for her to change. Pankaj your buaji she is leaving for her pilgrimage tomorrow make sure she has enough money and everything is packed, and you will accompany her to the train station"
"Okay bauji" answered the young men like good kids
"Bahus come here help our relatives who are leaving today after lunch, to pack make sure they have the return gifts from us and don't give them defiance you three have already embarrassed me enough" said G3. Walking away to speak with some more guests.
Chapter 22
Paridhi was like what is this we got married yesterday and today we have to work take care of the family why?? I want to spend time with my husband not his family. Vidhi sympathizes with her she tried to explain that this is how the Scindhia family functions nothing stops work or school.
"Aarti bahu come get the kids ready for school it is already eight o'clock, hurry they have to reach for nine their driver is waiting to take them." Ordered G3
"Bhabhi where do the girls attend school" asked Aarti. Vidhi told her the name of the school "But that is the opposite end of where Ansh goes he will also be late for school are there any other cars available to take him"
"No there is not! "shouted G3 having heard the conversation "My grand daughters will be late let the boy stay at home today and he can learn how to behave himself in a house with a family !" she made no secret that she did not like Ansh. Paridhi and Vidhi looked at Aarti to observe her reaction but she was calmly looking and listening to her sasuma.
Aarti got the three kids ready for school she took the girls and place them in the car with the driver sent them to school, she took Ansh got a rickshaw and took him to school
G3 kept on entertaining the few remaining relatives confident that her orders were being carried out. Vidhi had an annoyed Paridhi with her organising the remaining return gifts for the relatives and arranging for lunch, and morning snacks with the servants; she saw when Aarti left with Ansh in the rickshaw and by the looks of things their sasuma was none the wiser. Paridhi was complaining about how Prateek abandon her here to do work she had to help serve snacks to the relatives and buaji wanted coffee, and where was Aarti Bhabhi she took the kids outside and now where is she??
The men returned home from dropping the relatives at the train station Paradhi immediately took Prateeek to task in front of everyone "Prateek this is not done I have to work when I should be on my honeymoon, I told you I want to go for a honeymoon but you said there are rituals to follow is being a maid one of them!"
"Bahu mind your manners! How dare you speak to my son like that! And have you no shame calling him by his first name! Wives are suppose to follow their husbands orders and not the other way around! You are here to take care of him, his needs and his family not order him around, he is not your property! And keep you head covered, and stop this nonsense about a honeymoon Prateek has to work with his father and brothers learning about the family business not go wandering about with you" G3 was livid never in her life did she expect to be humiliated like this in front of her relatives, a bahu who dares to control her son, and the idiot is just standing there not reprimanding his wife and supporting his mother.
"Prateek take Paridhi to your room" said Yash "Ma calm down Paridhi made a mistake she is not accustom to our ways she will learn"
"Learn what will that modern girl learn! And where is Aripta bahu! Another one who is out to kill me!" She continued shouting
"Ma Aripta is dead my wife's name is Aarti" replied Yash
"I am here mummy ji" quietly answered Aarti standing at the doorway
"Go and prepare lunch, make sure and make Palak's favourite dish Vidhi will tell you what it is and make sure my princess don't complain and when you are done make samosas for this afternoon's tea! And why are you still standing there get water and tea for my sons!" Aarti stood looking to her saas in amazement she is a tyrant is she for real or is putting on a show of supremacy for the relatives.
Yash was about to defend Aarti against his mother when he caught Aarti's eye she gestured to him to keep quiet.
The relatives were sympathizing with G3 "Bhabhi you have plenty of work to do with these bahus now Aripta was a gem she never would of control Yash like that, and she was the perfect housewife"
Another one said "Her mother brought her up correct in our traditions, she knew how to treat a husband and her sasural with respect, not like these new modern bahus, this one the orphan poor thing had no one to teach her right from wrong you have your hands full Bhabhi"
"Jiji you have to maintain control of these bahus and your household if not they will put you in a retirement home and forget about you, that is what all these modern bahus does now a days control the husband get him to take everything and get rid of the old parents." Another woman said with the men who were present agreeing with their wives.
"Aripta bahu you could of counted on to take care of you in your old age she was the perfect life partner for Yash"
Yash thought Aripta loved having Bhabhi and the servants around, she loved being rich, no she would just demand, and control him in private, and like the fool I was I meekly complied to all her demands.
Vidhi thought they did not know the real Aripta just the faade she put up, but then again these ladies look like they are all cut from the same cloth.
G3 looked up she saw Aarti still standing there " Aripta Bahu you are still standing here go do your work!"
Ramdularie came with the trolley with the water, tea and snacks for Yash, and Pankaj who both refused, and excused themselves. Aarti and Vidhi also left from there.
The three brothers and they wives met in Private in Prateek's and Paridhi's room
Paridhi was crying and Prateek was trying his best to comfort her poor girl was distraught she did not expect this type of treatment the first day after marriage, made to work she had servants at her parent's house her mother don't do household chores. Paridhi was not accustomed to being yell at or being embarrassed like that: she had her dreams of the perfect marriage with the perfect honeymoon Prateek had promise her after all the rituals they would go for they honey moon. Now she was stuck here with a saas from hell and she had to do housework. No she will not put up with this treatment she will have her way if Aarti and Vidhi Bhabhi want to be the perfect bahu and put up with this then let them she Paridhi will not.
Yash "Ma is so unreasonable I never knew this about her before she has no right to criticize he bahus like that and favour Aripta. I know Paridhi is young and modern Prateek is also young they both needs guidance from us bhayia" he said to Pankaj he continued "and her treatment of Aarti her refusal to call her by her name, and ma don't realize that my wife is not the maid. Aarti will help Vidhi Bhabhi with the chores, the care of the family also to teach Paridhi about house work, and traditions but we have servants to do the heavy work that what they are paid for."
Pankaj "Yash I have never interfered with ma's decisions before because I believed as dad and dadaji said the women takes care of the house and their matters so I took it for granted her treatment of Vidhi as normal saas bahu relationship. I believed that Vidhi being the eldest bahu will eventually take over the responsibilities from ma, and this was just ma's way of teaching her. I was such a stupid fool that I did not recognize the truth.
Yash said "Aarti why did you stop me a while back when ma was ordering you?"
"Because if you had defended me mummy ji would have felt more betrayed, and humiliated in the presence of the relatives. You do realize that they are looking for every little thing to make a big issue of. They are traditional people change is difficult for them to accept; for them men and women are not equals husbands order wives follow, wives accept the husband as her god and you don't question your god." Aarti expounded.
Vidhi responded "Aarti is correct this is what our mothers, and grand mothers teaches us we as women must take care of our husband's needs, his parents, his children his house first then ourselves. A wife must completely devote herself for her husband's happiness forgetting about her selves. A good wife knows how to cook, clean. Pray, and dress up for her husband, she must give him a son to carry forward his name. Paradhi your mother never told you this nah." Paradhi shook her head in negative "Well Aarti and I are here to help you have patience Paridhi we will get mummy ji to agree for your honeymoon"
"Bhabhi I don't understand why must we get their permission we are adults if we can get married why do we need their permission to go on our honeymoon. Then next thing you will be telling me that I am a prisoner here because I need their permission every time I have some where to go. That is so unfair my parents allowed me my freedom because they loved and trust me, Prateek I can't live like this I need my freedom I need my job remember you told me that I can continue to work I too have dreams "
"Pari I told you nah that my father don't allow the women of this family to work outside of the house but I will speak to him"
"When Prateek when will you do that it took you years before they accepted our relationship and agreed for our marriage you could of told then nah about my job my dreams. Prateek I feel so disappointed right now like I made a mistake in marrying you"
Aarti was listening diligently at their conversation she looked at her husband and he appeared to be deep in thought he really is handsome she thought and he is concern for his brothers happiness.
"Prateek don't worry I will try and help will you allow me to talk to bauji for you" offered Yash
"Bhayia let me try and speak to him first." Turning to his wife he addressed her Pari give me a few day let the relatives go then I will speak to him I promise." He held her hand hoping that she will agree but she responded "Prateek I don't think you have the guts to do that I will have to do something"
"Paridhi don't do anything foolish let Prateek speak to bauji " said Pankaj "We know our fathers temper if you act foolish it can cost you your marriage" he warned her.
Aarti was thinking how different the Scindhias were compared to her first in laws the Dubeys they accepted and treated her as their child giving her freedom and the responsibility of helping to manage their small business they allowed her to live her dream of becoming a lawyer and helping the poor.
This family is so stuck in tradition that they can't see that they are doing more harm than good with their children.
Aarti wanted to speak to Yash about the children's school and transport for Ansh so when Yash told for them to go to their room she followed him to their room.
"Aarti what Paridhi did was wrong she should of known better than to speak out like that in front of strangers, but what ma said to was also wrong, she should try and understand that Pradhi is young she expects certain things from her husband and her marriage. Aarti do you want to go on a honeymoon if you do I can arrange some time after a few weeks I don't mind a holiday I have not been on holidays in some years ever since Aripta died. I will speak to bauji about this."
"Yash ji I think I should get to know the family better before we go on a holiday and I think the kids should go with us. They will have so much fun and we can bond as a family"
"I agree Aarti I just thought you might have been expecting a honeymoon like Paridhi that why I asked"
"Yash this morning I went by rickshaw to drop Ansh to school"
"Why did you not take the car?"
"The girl's school are at the opposite end from where Ansh attends school so he would have been late for school as mummyji told that the girls must not be late "
"Bahu you just could not wait to carry news against me could you" said an angry G3 entering their room "Are you trying to turn my son against me what else should I expect from an orphaned widow like you. Married one day and already trying to influence my son against his parents what do you want money, jewellery "
"Ma what nonsense are you talking my wife and I talking are having a discussion here about our children welfare."
"What ever she has to say concerning my grand daughters she can speak in front of the family any how tomorrow is the parents teacher meeting at the girl's school Aripta bahu I want you to go with Yash to that meeting you are their mother now do your job and don't interfere with our life and I told you to keep Ansh home where is he I hope he is not causing trouble with the relatives bad mannered little boy"
"Ma how can you say Ansh is bad mannered he is a child he will learn with time it is our job to correct him. Keeping him home will not solve anything and why did you not allow the driver to take him to school first the girls are habitual of reaching late everyday why would today make a difference."
"SO you have started questioning my upbringing, and the decision I make for their well being all because of this woman who told you about my decision I made this morning, This woman you recently met you are taking her side over your own mother very good Yash for this stranger you are speaking back against your mother so now parents I don't have a say in my own grand daughters lives. Very good Yash Aripta never made you disrespect your parents she knew the value of family how do I expect this poor orphan to understand that."
"Ma Aarti never meant to disrespect you we were discussing about our children she is their mother and I am their father what ever discussion we make will be in their best interest I thank you for taking care of the girls for the past few years since Aripta died your input will always be valued and you can continue to contribute with your advice but bear in mind the final decision will be Aarti's and mine's."
Yash took Aart's hand and left the room with G3 fuming and muttering that she will speak to his bauji about this disrespect."Yash am I allowed to know where you are going because Aripta bahu have to help with the cooking, and serving of lunch"
"We are going out and you can forget about lunch she won't be here"
