Part 4
As Mr Suraj Scinidiya commanded, the wedding took place the following Saturday at the ballroom of Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City. The story that was going round was Yash and Aarti fell hard and fast for each other when Mr Suraj introduced them. The dinner reception was a small event since it was a last minute affair. Neither the bride nor the groom had anyone to invite so the guests mainly consisted of Mr Suraj Scinidiya's business associates. Mr Suraj's mother was back in India and Mr Suraj felt that there was no use in flying her over to meet her ill-mannered grandson. The last time she had flown over was six months ago for Pankaj's rites and the long flight had taken a toll on her health. When he had informed his sister that Yash was getting married, she had been thrilled to fly the family and all their relatives over like they did for Pankaj's wedding. However, he had convinced his sister that Yash and his bride would fly back to India when things were more settled at Scindiya Jewellery. He hoped Gayatri could persuade her precious son to do just that.
The bride and groom barely exchanged any words throughout the ceremony. If the guests had reservations about the couple being struck by cupid, they kept it to themselves. The groom had a permanent scowl etched to his face and the bride's smile was artificial. There was no physical contact between them and both of them looked they rather be anywhere else but at the wedding. The congratulatory and best wishes were greeted by the couple with non-existent enthusiasm. Gayathri was convinced that there was something more than meet's the eyes between them and she felt guilty pushing Yash into this marriage. She wondered what Aarti would gain from this nuptials and her husband was tight lipped about it. The whole wedding was arranged by her with the bride and groom showing minimal interest. She even had to spend countless calls to beg them to try their wedding outfits and convince Aarti to out on henna! They did not want any sangeet and Gayathri had to energy to insist for one.
"Nanaji, food!" Payal grabbed her grandmother's hand and pointed to the buffet area, jumping up and down. She was dressed in a cute pink dress and Madhu had tied her hair in two ponytails. Gayathri heart melted at her only granddaughter's sweet smile. She was looking so adorable and happy in this celebratory mood. Gayathri's spirit dampened at the thought that she could no longer witness her hyperactive granddaughter's antics. She was shocked when Aarti had mentioned during her bridal fitting that they would be staying over at Yash's apartment in Midtown. She tried persuading Aarti to move into her house but Aarti simply told her to convince her son since it did not make any difference to her where she lived. Broaching the subject with Yash was an uphill task. He told Gayathri to tell her husband not to make them adopt Payal. Expectedly, Gayatri was not able to change her husband's mind and she prayed that Payal would be well taken care of. Thankfully, Madhu would be coming along and this ought to provide Payal some familiarity and security.
Aarti was filled with relief that the whole wedding was over when she walked towards the hotel room after most of the guests have left. She was accompanied by Gayathri and Payal. Payal was skipping happily in front of them and Aarti could not fathom how Payal could still be full of energy after running around at the reception. It was already close to midnight and Aarti was dead beat. She had arrived at the bridal suite at two in the afternoon and one person after another had been after her to put on her outfit, to style her hair, to accessorise her and to apply make up for her. It had been chaotic and comical the way the stylists, engaged by Gayathri, had acted like it's the end of the world when they forgot to bring along a bracelet. She was too heavily decked up that she doubt anyone would even notice that bracelet if she had worn it. She could barely recognise herself after they were "done" with her four hours later for the wedding ceremony.
It was only when she was on the platform and Yash was seated beside her did she become aware of the butterflies in her stomach. Her mind started questioning her decision and making a mockery out something so sacred but it was too late to change anything she realised when Yash placed the mangalsutra on her neck. Even though Mr Suraj had told Yash to contact her to get a briefing on Scindiya Jewellery, he did not do so. He was starting work that coming Monday as the CEO yet he did not seem concern to know the "ins and outs" of Scindiya Jewellery. Aarti knew that Mr Suraj was fuming with Yash's nonchalant attitude and hoped with his marriage and adoption of Payal, Yash would change but in Aarti's opinion, Mr Suraj Scindiya was up for a huge disappointment.
Payal immediately started jumping on the bed the moment they stepped into the room.
"Nanaji! Nanaji!" She cried in fits of giggles and she took the bed as a trampoline. Thankfully they were not spending the night at the hotel because Aarti would have reprimanded Payal for messing up the bed. The child was in need of some discipline.
They have only stepped back into the bridal suite for barely two minutes when Gayathri received a call. She seemed frantic about it and Aarti bet it had something to do with her precious son.
"Aarti, Yash wants to go back home now. He is waiting for you downstairs. We need to hurry," Gayathri informed Aarti after she put down the phone. What Aarti gathered from Gayathri's one-sided conversation was that Yash had asked the valet to get his car and he wanted to leave without Aarti but Mr Suraj Scindiya stopped him and had taken the car keys from the valet. It appeared that if Aarti was not there in five minutes, Yash would snatch the keys from his father's hands and drive off. Luckily, Aarti had already packed her stuffs in her Nike duffel bag so she grabbed that and they made their way down with Gayathri rushing Aarti every step they took.
Aarti saw that Yash's car was a Maserati and his top was down. Payal immediately ran towards her uncle the moment they spotted him. Yash was still scowling and disregarded Payal's greeting and Mr Suraj looked unhappy. Aarti purposely took her time to get into the passenger seat and she could feel Yash's anger simmering. Payal kept chanting Yash chachu as she stood at Yash's side of the car, jumping up and down in excitement. As Aarti was about to close the door, she was caught off guard when Payal ran towards her and climbed onto her lap. Apparently Payal wanted to go for a ride. Aarti could tell that even Yash was surprised by Payal's action as he turned to scowl at his niece momentarily. He then focused his attention on starting the engine. Aarti was about to voice out that Madhu should come along too but Gayathri beat her to it.
"Wait Yash, why are you taking Payal with you? Madhu is not even coming along. How will you all take care of her? I mean newly married couples should not be disturbed on their wedding night," Gayathri spoke as she came over to get Payal. Payal pushed her grandmother's hands away.
"Come Payal to Nanaji. Leave your chachu alone ok. Tomorrow, you and Madhu didi will go over. Then you can play at the swimming pool. Remember we already bought your float to play?" Nanaji coaxed her grandchild but Payal shook her head and ducked away when Gayathri tried to reach for her. Instead she screamed "Bye Bye" and started waving her hands. Aarti wonder if she should just carry Payal and pass her to Gayathri since Gayathri was impossibly a push over when it came to her grandchild and son.
"Ma, you are wasting my time. Can't you just grab her? She is only two for God sake! What can she understand? "Yash expressed his annoyance.
"What is wrong if Payal follow you two home? You are supposed to be her parents now. She should start bonding with the two of you instead of you trying to push her away," Mr Suraj stepped in and pulled Gayathri back. Gayathri was shocked at her husband's incomprehensible logic. Did he honestly think Yash and Aarti can look after Payal? Where was Madhu? Madhu need to go with them but Yash's car cannot take another passenger. Both Aarti and Gayathri spoke at the same time.
"Wait, I will ask Madhu..."
"I do not think it is possible..."
Yash glared at his father in defiance and immediately sped off causing Gayathri and Aarti to end their sentences midway. The sudden jerk of the car caused Aarti's heart to skip a beat but Payal was thrilled by it. She started screaming out in joy and turned to give Aarti a big smile. Aarti did not know what the laws are on having children in the car but she was positive having a child on your lap in a two-seater with the top down would get her into trouble if they were pulled over by the cops and gauging from Yash's speed, they would be pulled over soon.
"It is against the laws to have a child on your lap in a moving vehicle and with the way you drive, we will definitely get into trouble," Aarti cautioned Yash when he finally stopped at a red light.
He raised an eyebrow, "You are most welcome to step out and get your own car so you can drive it your way. I am sure my father pay you enough for that."
Before Aarti could react, the light had turned green and Yash sped off once again. Payal was the only one enjoying the ride immensely. She caught the sight of her uncle's Ray ban near the gearbox and reached for it but her uncle took it away from her hand. Aarti's heart nearly jumped out when Yash let go of the steering wheel to put the glasses away as the car was moving at an insane speed. Payal pouted and Aarti was expecting her to start wailing but the bright billboards along Manhattan city caught her attention.
"Phone," she pointed as she caught the display of an Iphone on the billboard. She was immersed with the sights and lights.
At that moment, Aarti's phone started ringing and she reached for it in her Nike duffel. It was Gayathri who was obviously concern about her granddaughter. She told Aarti about where Madhu had kept Payal's clothes and where Payal's bottle and milk were. Payal needed milk to fall asleep. They had converted one of the rooms in Yash's penthouse into Payal's room and had kept all her stuffs there. Aarti too had moved some of her stuffs over. Mr Lawarence had asked her to collect the keys to Yash's apartment last week and told her that she could bring over her belongings during certain designated time which she guessed would be those time when Yash was not home. Aarti was a little overwhelmed when she first stepped into Yash's luxurious penthouse. It was a spectacular sight.
The two storey apartment was very different from her apartment in Brooklyn. There was actually a swimming pool at the other end of the house where the balcony was which was separated from the living room by a sliding door. The living room was furnished with white sofa set, a 42 inch plasma TV, a home entertainment system and a mini-bar. The kitchen was fully equipped with all necessary household appliances. Yash had gone with the island concept for the kitchen where the stove was in the middle of it and the kitchen island's counter top was used as a place to have meals. The house had a top to floor glass windows and one could have a clear view of the Manhattan skyline. The flooring for the whole house was parquet except for the balcony which had marble flooring. All the bedrooms were located on the second floor. Her room was furnished with a queen size bed, a huge wardrobe and a study table and she was contented with the simple yet stylish furnishings. She was elated that there was a bathroom in her room which meant that essentially she did not need to step out of her room at all. She knew that Yash's room was at the other end of the floor while Payal's room would be next to her. Yash had a helper, Radhaji, a fifty-something woman who came to the house every weekday from nine in the morning to three in the afternoon to clean up the place, do laundry and cook Yash's meals.
Yash turned off the car engine after he was done parking the car and stepped out of the car. Payal jumped out of the car the moment Aarti opened the door. He bet Aarti must be relieved that they arrived at his place. Despite trying to hide her emotions, he noticed her eyes kept glancing at the speedometer and how she swallowed hard with every upward movement of the needle. He loved the feel of the wind in his face as he drove but she visibly did not know how to appreciate that! He headed towards the elevator with Aarti and Payal trailing after him. He was in a rotten mood and he did not know why. Actually he knew why! His home was invaded and he felt like he lost his damn space. Maybe they should have just moved to his parent's place. It was his own stupid idea to have everyone in his apartment since he did not want to move anywhere and now he felt suffocated!
His mother had come the other day with Payal and her nanny and started turning one of the rooms into "Payal's room." She had bought a Mickey Mouse bed and all things Mickey Mouse to decorate the room because her damn granddaughter adored Mickey Mouse! Damn there were even Mickey Mouse plastic plates and cups in his kitchen. And apparently she bought floats so he could teach Payal swimming since Payal was so excited there was a swimming pool in his place. He was a fool to think that nothing would change when he agreed to this marriage. And Aarti had looked so damn alluring in that fushia pink lengha that she had adorned. She had looked every inch the shy, innocent Indian bride except she was neither shy nor innocent! If he was not careful, he was sure that instead of Scindiya Jewellery falling into Akash's hands, it would fall into Aarti's hands. He was still not sure what game Aarti was playing. If she was the old man's mistress, why would she want to sell her shares to him? Like what they say, keep your friends close and your enemies closer and Yash was doing exactly that.
Payal immediately rushed into the house and headed towards to the swimming pool when Yash opened the door. It was amazing that she had been here only twice yet she could perfectly remember where the swimming pool was! Yash ignored his niece calling out for him to swim and headed towards his room to step out from this sherwani. Aman was at Chillax Bar waiting for him as he needed a drink badly to deal with this whole situation!
Aarti saw Payal peering into the swimming pool. She was very close to the edge and she seemed to think that they were there to swim even when her uncle had retired to his room. Aarti made her way to her room and wonder if she should just go to bed in her bridal wear! She was that tired. Payal realised she was all alone on the first floor and ran after Aarti.
"Yash chachu?" she asked Aarti after she caught up with Aarti as they climbed the stairs.
Aarti told herself to point to Payal Yash's room when they reached the second floor so Yash could entertain his niece and was surprised when Yash appeared at the top of the stairs dressed in a green T-shirt and jeans. He past them on the staircase as he headed down. He stepped out of the house after grabbing his car keys from the bar counter leaving both Aarti and Payal were stunned. Payal immediately ran down the stairs towards the door when she realised she had been left behind.
"Yash chachu! Yash cachu!" Payal cried as she banged the door hysterically with her small palms. She tip toed to reach the handle of the door of the door and wailed even louder when she could not touch them. She eyed Aarti suspicously and pointed to the door crying out for Yash.
When Aarti did not budge, Payal came to her and tried to pull her towards the door as she started calling out for Nanaji and Madhu didi. Tears streamed down her cheeks and her face was red from the crying. Aarti wondered if she should call Gayathri and asked for Madhu to be sent over but that would in opposition to what Mr Suraj wanted.
"Your uncle has left you and the sooner you accept that he does not care for you, the better it will be," Aarti pulled her hand away from Payal's grasp and climbed up the stairs. There was nothing that she could do since Yash did not want his niece and her grandfather seemed eager to get rid of her. She hoped Payal would get tired of crying and understand that there was nothing she could achieve with those tears when the people she was shedding them for did not care for her. In the meantime, Aarti decided that she would shower while Payal come to her senses.
When she moved towards the living room after her shower, something pricked inside her. Her mind started wondering if children ever die from crying as Aarti recalled Payal gasping for air in between her sobs. Aarti quickened her step when she saw Payal lying faced down on the floor in front of the door. She crouched to the floor and lifted Payal's head. A pair of defeated eyes stared at her and fresh set of tears rolled down Payal's cheeks. Aarti was angry at Yash for leaving her behind to look after his niece. How irresponsible could he be! She was not interested in taking care of this girl as well! Mr Suraj should not have let her come with them knowing neither one of them had the ability to care for her. And Gayathri should have just been firmed when she knew her granddaughter was not in capable hands. Payal was not Aarti's problem!
"Come Payal, go to your room and sleep," Aarti ordered as she stood up and headed towards to the stairs. When Payal did not move, Aarti called out to her, more sternly this time.
"I am seriously going to leave you here if you do not move. You can sit and wait until your uncle comes home." With that, Aarti started climbing the stairs.
Either she understood Aarti or she was just afraid of being alone, Payal ran after Aarti. She grabbed Aarti's hand with her small hands as she made the way up with Aarti, still sobbing. Aarti begrudgingly helped a listless Payal shower and changed into her pyjamas and diaper. Aarti did not know that two year old still wore diapers! Thank god somewhere between the shower and changing of clothes, Payal had stopped crying. But when she tucked Payal into bed and stepped away, Payal immediately climbed out of bed and wrapped her hands around Aarti's leg. She started sobbing again and crying out for her grandmother and nanny.
Aarti walked back to her own room determined to ignore this child but Payal clung on to Aarti's legs and tagged along. Aarti climbed into her bed and Payal followed suit. She had stopped crying although her face was still wet from the tears she just shed. She wrapped her hands around Aarti's neck and placed her head on Aarti's chest. Aarti tried to peel Payal's hands away and placed Payal next to her but Payal clung on even tighter as if afraid Aarti would leave her too. Aarti was too exhausted for this battle. Tomorrow after Madhu was here, she would not be my problem!
