L'il Masters rocks; Chak.. booms, Nachke.. doomed?
Wednesday, 05 May 2010 17:51

Size doesn't matter. The smaller; the better. This has been amply proved by unheralded little kids from Dance India Dance L'il Masters (Zee TV) and Chak Dhoom Dhoom (Colors) who have put their erstwhile TV stars of Zara Nachke Dikha to shame.

The three dance reality shows made their debut last week, and all of them air at prime time on their respective channels. Zee TV's DID L'il Masters has emerged as the clear winner clocking a TVR of 6.7 for its inaugural episode. This not only makes it the top show (fiction and non-fiction) for the TAM week 18 (April 25 to May 1), but it's the biggest opening for any show in the last three years. Interestingly, the preceding Dance India Dance finale could only muster a rating of 5.

Colors' Chak Dhoom Dhoom drew a TVR of 4.4 while, Star Plus' celebrity reality show Zara Nachke Dikha could only muster a TVR of 2.4. (Though, it must be noted that Zara.. airs on Saturday and Sunday whereas its two competing shows air on Friday and Saturday)

While it will be too early to write off Zara Nacke Dikha, the success of the two juvenile shows clearly indicate that the viewers are longer warming to the celebrity dance reality shows, where talent often takes second place to controversy and other theatrics. We've already seen the first casualty when Mohit Sehgal and Sanaya Irani were found wanting as hosts, and subsequently replaced by Jennifer Winget and RJ Mantra.

Rakhi Sawant proudly claimed that she'll create history at Zara Nachke Dikha. The out-of-favour drama queen should now pray that the show picks up in the coming weeks or else, she'll be confined to history.

Meanwhile, the final of Indian Premier League 3 between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings clocked a staggering TVR of 10.5 (All India market).

The top ten shows across Hindi GECS is as follows –

L'il Masters - 6.7, Pavitra Rishta 6.0, Uttaran 5.9, Na Aana Is Des Laado 4.9, Jhansi Ki Rani 4.8, Pratigya 4.7, Bidaai 4.7, Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai 4.5, Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo 4.4, Chak Dhoom Dhoom 4.4

Colors has regained the number spot with 288 GRPs, Star Plus is just two GRPs less, while Zee TV drops to third spot with 279 GRPs.

Pratigya to leave Krishna's house?

STAR Plus' popular show Pratigya will witness a major twist after Pratigya (Pooja Gor) decides to leave Krishna's (Arhaan Behll) house.

Pratigya will leave the house as a result of the spat with her husband Krishna who will end up slapping her. Krishna's family has organised a pooja for Pratigya and the heir apparent to the family. Pratigya will be forced to reveal it to the family that she is not pregnant.

Informs a source, "Pratigya will disclose it to all the members of the family that she is not pregnant and Krishna has been lying to them. When push will come to shove, she will also reveal that she doesn't feel for her husband and they haven't consummated their marriage yet. This will infuriate Krishna who in return will slap her. Pratigya will feel insulted as she will be slapped and humiliated for no fault of hers and will in turn decide to leave Krishna and his house."

When contacted, Pooja said: "Yes, I am leaving Krishna's house."

The show's co-producer Pearl Grey said: "The show is taking an interesting turn and viewers can expect a lot of twists and highpoint on the show."

Will Pratigya return to Krishna? Watch the entire drama unfold on Pratigya at 10:30 pm on STAR Plus.

Pearl Grey, the Prodcuer of Star Plus' well-accepted show Mann Ki Awaaz Pratigya in an exclusive conversation with TellyBuzz…

Pearl Grey's Spellbound Productions combined with Manmohan Shetty's Walkwater Productions to give the viewers the tale of a small town girl who is subjected to eve-teasing, in Star Plus' well-accepted show, Mann Ki Awaaz Pratigya.

TellyBuzz brings you an exclusive chat with the Producer Pearl Grey where she talks about the manner in which such a concept was arrived at, about the viewers' appreciation the show has got and much more…

What made you come up with a concept like Pratigya?
Eve-teasing is one major issue that has been ignored by society even though it is a part and parcel of many a girls' lives. With no fault of theirs, the girls get subjected to a high degree of humiliation, which affects their entire family. I am sure every girl in a small town will relate to our character of Pratigya, and will appreciate that this subject is being talked about.

How do you feel when you get appreciated for producing such a show? What do you think has made the difference?
I am happy that my work as a Producer is being appreciated. I have come across so many people who have told me that they identify with the characters portrayed in the serial. We are overwhelmed with the positive response got. I basically wanted to portray reality on television with characters that have a degree of reality to them, who are not the usual sugar-coated ones, and not the typical grey characters. We used the language as the basic criteria in differentiating the two families. We wanted to portray the different ways in which civilized and uncivilized families react to a given situation. The incidents that we are depicting are very real, and this is the USP of our show.

Pratigya started well, but it was Krishna's family that brought a new high in ratings. How do you see that?
Yes, we always knew that Krishna's family will be our main trump cards. We were mentally preparing the audience by making them wonder how the family of this guy Krishna would be, who we had shown as the typical uncivilized and rugged character. This family had to be completely opposite to the Sharma family, and the underlining fact we wanted to show is the behavioural difference between the two families. On the whole, the introduction of Krishna's family was a big challenge for us, and we now realize that our hard work has paid off (smiles).

What were the criterias you looked at while casting for Krishna's family?
See, we did go thro' a lot of detailing when we were casting for every character in Krishna's family. We made sure we narrate the intricate details of the characters when the actors came down for auditions. This probably helped them get into the skin of the characters very easily, and their efforts show on screen today. Take for example, Krishna's mother who is a woman who gets beaten left right and centre by her husband, but at the very next minute she is fine and all ready to show her dominance over her daughters-in-law. On the other hand, we have Kesar who is all subdued and silent. In this scenario enters a woman Pratigya who almost gets a leverage of living her life in her own way. This certainly irks the mother who has never been able to ascertain her presence in the house, all her life. On the other hand, there is this daughter in the family Komal who has been protected by one and all. While all the other women in the house are being treated like dust, you see this girl of the house getting pampered. She has grown up seeing her father and brothers using an abusive language, and has inherited all those qualities from them. So we have a great mix of characters out here.

How do you see television today?

Television has reached a saturation point wherein viewers are getting to see similar shows everywhere. The story lines are getting predictable, and this is what the creatives do not want. I believe that fiction means depicting reality, and that is what I wanted to deliver. I am glad that the channel understood my ideas; they have trusted me a lot and given me the full freedom of creativity. I will surely not let them down.

What are the shows that you like watching on television?
Shows like Pavitra Rishta and Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo have a real side to it, and that appeals me.

What is priority to you – delivering a good product or delivering a show high on TRPs?
See, numbers count a lot. It gives you a picture of whether the viewers are watching your show or not. So yes, ratings are extremely important to me, otherwise all the hard work goes a waste. I believe that if you are creative enough, ratings will follow you.

What do you have to say about your main lead Krishna?
Well, he is the typical uneducated guy with all the uncivilized qualities. Every woman deals with this kind of a guy at some phase of her life. Krishna is a guy who you will love to hate, but even then you end up falling in love. He is not a negative character, but there are so many things that are complex about him.

What do you have to say for the appreciation that your main actress Pooja Gor has got?
Pooja is doing a very good job. She is not playing the typical bahu who is seen always on television. But I keep telling her to improve her acting capabilities so that she can take her character to a new high.

What do you have to say about your blue eyed boy, Arhaan Behll?
Well, what can I say about him? I guess the character of Krishna was etched only for him. It is the same with Komal too. But my conviction in Arhaan was shaky to begin with. It was the channel that convinced me to go with him. Arhaan is an introvert by nature, and when he was being narrated his role I was sitting there and watching him. He was taken aback when he was being described his role, and that was when I thought he would not be able to do it. But the channel got him in, and I am really happy with the way he has carried his character.

Which is your favorite character in Pratigya?
Without a second thought it is Krishna.

What can the viewers see in the future episodes?
Well, we have a good honeymoon sequence coming for the two newly married couples. We will slowly see the manner in which Komal goes thro' a transformation and falls in love with Adarsh. On the other hand, Krishna's behaviour when he gets outside his house will be interesting to watch.

What are the future plans when it comes to Pratigya?
Well, we would want to become the #1 show (smiles). We have been consistent even with the IPL fever around; we are standing our ground and have gone way beyond the 4+ mark now.

Any new shows in the pipeline?
Yes, talks are on with various channels but nothing is decided.

Arhaan Behll, the recent heart throb on television on a tete-e-tete with Tellybuzz…

Arhaan Behll plays the very unpredictable Krishna in Spellbound Productions and Star Plus Mann Ki Awaaz… Pratigya. This is his debut as an actor and he is pleasantly surprised with all the love and adoration that's being showered on Krishna.

Here, he talks about how he trained for the role, his theory on why people like Krishna despite the grey shades and how he can never fess up to a girl about his liking for her.

How did Pratigya happen?
I just went for the auditions- my first audition for a TV show- and I got selected.

Have you always been inclined towards acting?
Yes, right from school days I was into plays and drama. But I hadn't worked professionally after that. So Pratigya is my first step towards professionally pursuing my acting interests.

Tells us a little bit about your character.
Krishna, is not a bad guy, he is not a goon even though the way he treats other people is not very nice. But it's because of his family, the way he has been brought up that he behaves aggressively. From inside, he is very good.
Also, he carries a gun around because of which no one questions him. So he feels like a King. He has this bit of attitude (laughs).

With so much of negative shades in the character, didn't you feel apprehensive of taking it up?
Actually, no. I loved Krishna the moment he was narrated to me. He was so different from me that I found him challenging. The contradictions in his character made him more interesting.

How did you groom yourself for this character?
(Laughs) Actually, I watched a lot of films like Haasil and Omkara. Got to know many things from them. I also had a seven day workshop with my writer. So I got to learn a lot about language and where I need to stress etc. Later, we were in Allahabad on a ten day shooting schedule. That gave me a chance to observe the native people in their own surroundings…which was like the best lesson.

Do you relate to your character?
Arhaan and Krishna are totally different. Arhaan speaks Hindi, Punjabi and English whereas Krishna speaks in a typical UP dialect. And Arhaan is really shy. But I guess there a few similarities. Arhaan and Krishna both are fearless and totally loyal. Also, Arhaan is a bit stubborn but not as much as Krishna (smiles).

What do you have to say for the way Krishna pursues Pratigya?
Umm…what can I say? It's the demand of the show…

What according to you is the ideal way to approach a girl one likes?
Well, see when it comes to me, I can never go up to a girl and say that I like her. But that is the best way according to me, to pursue your darling girl. Just go up and say that you like her and leave the decision to that person.

Tell us a little about your real-life experience in wooing a girl, romance, puppy-love…
I've had so many crushes I don't remember a particular one right now (laughs).

You have a huge fan following despite the fact that your character is not all that lovable. What do you think is the reason?
Krishna is loyal and has a clean heart, despite all the shortcomings. The intensity, with which he loves, is craved by most of the girls. I think this could be reason…I don't have any other theories.

How has the fame and recognition affected your personal life?
It hasn't affected me as a person or my close ones in their feelings towards me. But it has affected my daily life. In the sense whenever I go out people recognize me and come up to talk to me. They discuss Krishna's character; ask for autographs or pictures…at times phone numbers (laughs).

What kind of feedback have you received on Krishna's character?
I got to know from them that they hate his shoes. Many people have told me the same thing- 'Please change the shoes that you wear onscreen' (laughs). So I've asked my creative to see if something can be done about it.
And they loved when Krishna said – I lub you (laughs). When I performed for the shot, I wasn't sure about it. I was like it doesn't matter how rural a place is…everyone knows how to say I love you. But turns out…that particular scene has become a favorite!

Tell us about your off-screen relationship with Pooja Gor.
We are good friends. We always keep fighting over silly small things. But it's all in good spirits. In fact the entire cast and crew is very nice. I have a good bond with all of them.

Your experience with the production house – Spellbound Productions.
I haven't worked with any other production house so I can't do comparisons. But I'm really liking being associated with this production house.

Television Czarina Ekta gives due credit to true talent and humbly confesses that she has the least part to play in her latest show- Keshav Pandit on Zee…

Balaji Telefilms and Zee TV's upcoming show Keshav Pandit has been in talks not just for it being a novel adaptation but more so because Ekta Kapoor is producing it.

However, Ekta Kapoor had been humble enough in passing on the sincere credits firstly to the Writer Ved Prakash Sharma, Director Santram Verma and last but not the least to the channel Zee TV, and regarded them as the three important pillars of this show. She also opined that her efforts have the least involvement.

Talking about her excitement about the letter 'K' again getting associated with her serial she cheerfully replied, "Yes, surely the 'K' series is back and I'm equally excited. However, this time it's a mere co-incidence because luckily for me the writer had created the character with the letter 'K', so I used it without changing it."

Ekta was also modest enough in appreciating the work of her competitors' shows. "Frankly I don't get much time to watch television serials; but if I have to name any serials that I like to glance upon, it has to be the Star Plus serial Pratigya and Zee TV's Jhansi ki Rani. I assume both the serials are doing good on television", exclaimed Ekta.

Ekta was also heard saying that Keshav Pandit has been planned to be a 26 episode series as of now. Based on the audience reaction, the production house will decide whether to go with an extension or not!!

It started with Mihir Virani and Tulsi from Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi being the favourite jodi on TV and over the years a number of newer jodis have come that audiences have liked.

Today, there may not be any one couple that viewers love, but there are quite a few that have managed to make a mark and by the way, many of these are not the conventional pairs, yet their underlying chemistry has worked.

Latest to join the popular jodi bandwagon are Krishna and Pratigya from Mann Ki Aawaz Pratigya. Though the couple is yet to discover their love for one another, their fierce ego battles make the show popular with the audience. The brahmin ka ladka and Kayasth ki ladki too have finally managed to win the hearts of their viewers. Abeer and Leher's love story in Yeh Pyaar Na Hoga Kam currently have the audience rivetted, thanks to the small town appeal.

Another show that has propelled its jodi to top slot thanks to the small town appeal, is Sabki Jodi Wahi Banata... Bhagya Vidhata. Bindya and Vinay, played by Richa Soni and Vishal Karwal have found many takers in the audience. For a show based on heartland India, this comes as no surprise. While the older woman-younger man jodi of Simi and Abhi from 12/24 Karol Bagh has hit bull's eye, Shekhar and Laali from Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo and Dev and Radhika from Chhoti Bahu are examples of popular onscreen couples from shows based on rural India.

So great is the audience attachment to the jodis, that their on screen make-ups or break-ups create massive hype. Take for example the Manav-Archana break-up in Pavitra Rishta which even made news on TV. So what really makes a jodi popular? "It's the popularity of the show," says a telly serial director. Another popular couple on TV is Mayank and Nupur from Mile Jab Hum Tum (MJHT). The actors have managed to connect with the younger audience who form majority of the fan base. "Mile Jab... is a romantic comedy and the youngsters who watch the show relate to the characters of Mayank and Nupur. They portray the ups and downs in relationships that most youngsters face today. This factor is working in favour of the jodi," explains producer Sudhir Sharma.

However, it's not just chemistry that makes jodis click on screen. As producer-director Rajan Shahi explains, "The people who play a vital role in making these jodis endearing are the writers, director and music director. Secondly, the actors who lend their personas to these characters give it the X-factor which makes the jodi unique."

Most small town girls don't have a choice when it comes to marriage. They simply go by their parents' wishes. For a change, we have girl from Lucknow, who choose her own groom, but not an ideal one. This was no love marriage but a compromise of sorts. Meet Pratigya of 'Mann Ki Awaaz Pratigya' fame, who opts to marry a goon.

Playing this character is the beautiful Pooja Gor, who played Kritika Kamra's sister in 'Kitani Mohabbat Hai'. That show is a matter of past now. Today, 'Pratigya' is the number one show on Star Plus and Pooja Gor is its queen. The pretty girl spoke exclusively to TellyCafe.

Excerpt.

Purvi to Pratgiya. Pooja Gor has now become a huge star. Do you agree?

No, I don't agree with you. I can never think like that, and if I do, it would imply that success has gone to my head. I'm merely an actor who does her job. For an actor, the fame is an added bonus. I'm just happy doing a job.

Not many gave the show a chance, before the show started,. Honestly, did you think that the show had the potential to be number one?

Number one is something which you can't predict, but after being briefed about the script, I was quite confident that it will appeal to the audience.

If you have to point out one single thing, what is it in 'Pratigya' that caught the viewer's imagination?

It's the reality in the tracks, the theme, and the base of the story. Viewers relate to the problems faced by Pratigya. It's this reality that has won them over.

In real life, would Pooja had gone the Pratgiya way and married a goon?

Ah…. no! It depends from person to person how she will react to such a situation. Pratigya and Pooja are two different persons. As Pooja, I don't think I would have done that.

The show has become a hit, but it appears to be just another conflict between a bahu and her in-laws?

No, we've taken up other issues too. First we took up eve teasing, then abortion, and now it's the beating up of women. These are issues which women face in most parts of our country. You need to have a total entertainment package.

Krishna and Pratgya are two entirely different characters. The guy is a goon while Pratigya is a well educated and forward thinking girl. Strangely, the viewers seem like this odd pairing. Why is that?

At times, even I'm shocked to see their reactions. Maybe the people are like Pratigya and Krishna because they are a different kind of pair. They haven't seen such a jodi before.

Can you remember how many men you've slapped, since the story began?

Two.

Just two! That's a surprise. Will any eve teaser dare to come to you now?

You guys (media) run such footage many times. Also in the show, a slap is aired at least three times. If you don't do that then it won't have the desired effect.

TV speaks of women employment, but sadly most protagonists end up being the idealistic and submissive bahu. Doesn't it beat the purpose then? And, is that how we'd like our woman to be known that too in the 21st century?

Every show portrays a girl in a different way. I can't be speaking about them. At the end of the day, we're just going by the script. Look, a new era has begun. People want to see reality in soaps. It's a new genre all together.

The channel and the producers are right in making shows that cater to the Hindi heartland, but there is a growing sense of frustration among the urban viewers who have been simply neglected. Don't such viewers deserve their kind of programming?

It's not as if the urban viewers aren't watching television. Besides, they've had their time. The earlier decade belonged to them. There is so much to explore. It's time for the rural masses to get what they want.

'Kitani Mohabbat Hai' is coming back. Is it wishful thinking to expect Pooja Gor to be part of it?

I'd love to be part of it if it depended on my wish. However, that's unlikely to happen. I wish the show all the very best.

There are murmurs that Pooja Gor is seeing someone. How true is it?

(Laughs) I don't like to comment on my personal life.
