Chapter 17

Her unsure lips touched his cold ones for the briefest second and heat revved up her brain. So much so that she was compelled to forget everything and lose herself in lust. Udayveer's eyes opened and at the same moment Manyata opened hers too. They stood frozen for one millionth of a second and then Udayveer literally laughed in her mouth all of a sudden.

Their audience began to laugh as well and Manyata wanted to dig a hole in the ground and bury herself in it. She had never felt so humiliated before. Udayveer laughed so hard that tears came out of his eyes.

She began to walk away and he said from behind "that was just an innocent prank Manyata..did you think a fit guy like me would really get a heart attack?..where are you going? Come on..the real fun is yet to begin-"

She interjected "fun! You and your cheap actors can stay here and play pranks..im going.." she wiped a hand across her still stinging lips. If he had woken a minute later..

"wait Manyata..don't tell me you are so riled because I didn't let you kiss me properly! Aww baby.." he winked at her.

"I hate you!.." she yelled loudly and moved forward. He was following her and she ran. She wasn't paying attention to her path obviously and felt herself slipping. Udayveer caught her hand just in time but it was too late.

The next instant both were sliding down by the mountain's slippery side screaming like kids on roller coaster, safety head gear and all. Their path was already muddy and wet from the recent rain and more rain was on its way.

"UDAYVEER..YOU IDIOT..WHY DID YOU JUMP IN WITH ME?" she hollered.

"BECAUSE YOU WERE COMMITTING SUCIDE AND I DECIDED TO ACCOMPANY YOU TO HELL" he answered in same way.

"I wasn't commtting sucide..i slipped..But why didn't you let go my hand? Don't know where we'll land now" she said in a low voice.

"you must be joking..how could I let you go just like that?" he stopped to think and said "your Kuvar Arjun singh would eat me alive if anything happened to you"

Mention of Arjun made her homesick and she wiped her right eye with the back of her hand.

"wow!! This is much more adventurous than Bungee jumping..Im having fuuunnn!! Weee!!" Udayveer said in order to distract her.

They slipped headlong into a shallow creek below and landed without much damage. They were wet like fish and that made the situation more intimate.

"you are such a jerk Uday..Tomorrow if I fall sick and die, it'll be just because of you..what are you laughing at? Don't look at me that way..YOU!!" she raised a quivering finger at him.

He laughed uncontrollably and said between the laughter, "im laughing imagining your face in my mind when you missed a chance to kiss me..That was priceless! Wow..whats that in the distance?"

She looked in the direction he pointed and spotted a turret in the opposite bank of the rivulet amidst the trees. It looked like an old church, built during British rule.

"lets go there.." he extended his hand and she took it like that was the thing she had been doing since years. They walked hand in hand splashing water with their feet, without a care in the world.

Wet and weary they reached the church and stepped inside. It was a Victorian style edifice with stained glass windows. There was absolute silence there and if listened carefully even their breaths could be heard. It was eerie with no soul around.

"heyyy!! Ohhh! Helllooo" Udayveer's voice echoed in the church.

"I know you are a fan of Shahrukh khan but can you be quiet for two minutes? Im praying..please" she shushed him.

He looked around the place while she joined her hands and bowed her head. "How innocent she looks while praying.." Udayveer felt himself wondering.

"BOO!!" her stance broke hearing Udayveer's voice. She slapped him playfully on the arm. "Couldn't you be silent for one more minute? I was praying yaar..you know its rude to interrupt a prayer"

Yaar..she said yaar!! "really? What did you pray for? For lots of wealth? For a loving hubby? For a dozen children? Or dozen cats?" he quipped jokingly.

He had hit on a nerve it seemed. Loving hubbies and children were a touchy subject and they fell into an awkward silence.

"Manyata..Im sorry for the prank I played on you before..i just wanted to-"

"Children..its time have to lock down the church..would you mind?" an old lady said from the aisle. What time was it? Manyata's stomach growled in protest.

"Aunty..we were just leaving..Could you tell us how can we reach the road from here?" Udayveer asked her.

"the road..its little bit far from here child..meanwhile why don't you both come to my house and have something to eat? Your wife looks sick.." she surveyed manyata's wet clothes and tousled hair.

Minutes later they were seated in a ragged house enjoying the hospitality of the old woman who was the care taker of the church. She brought two plates of steaming Daal with hot rotis. For their hungry stomachs it must have been god send. Uday began to eat with gusto and Manyata kept staring at him.

"why aren't you eating? Did you get so used to the royal food at home that this is not digestible by you?" he queried.

Manyata held up her right hand in answer. It was bruised with skin coming off through her fingers. His blood pumping organ gave him such a tight squeeze that he felt difficult to swallow. "I scraped it while slipping and hit a sharp rock when we fell in the water.." she replied.

He broke a piece of Roti with his hands and held it to her mouth. She didn't react.

"what? Eat it..if you fall unconscious I'll have to carry you back and I can't do that..so just eat ok..and don't you dare bite my finger" he hid his concern by being nonchalant.

Her throat constricted in a strange way and she sucked Udayveer's fingers in the pretext of yummy daal. There was something strange happening and she couldn't put her finger on it.

"Hey you..Somebody paid for your bail and now you are free..Get moving" a police man said to Kabir.

Kabir was brought out of the cell and made to sign some papers. He spotted Manyata's parents sitting with Tanya outside. As soon as he came out they hugged him like he was their own son.

"sorry son..we took a long time to arrange the bail money..but we know that you can never stoop so low as to cheat in exams..lets go home" Komal said.

By evening Manveer reached their homestay and very late Manyata realized that her exams were up in two days and except cramming she had no other way. Text books were beginning to resemble demons and sleep was looking better.

"I can't understand anything in this text book..i shall surely fail this time.." she cried.

"Manyata, I'll help you..Why fear when Udayveer is here..i was the topper in my college" he held her face in his hands and tried to look into her eyes.

His assurance relaxed her and she smiled faintly. "Trust me" he placed a hand on her palm.

Her mobile began to vibrate and she got down from the bed to answer it. She looked at the number on the display doubtingly and pressed the button.

"hello.." her voice was curious.

It seemed the caller on the other end was telling her a very serious thing, from the way she listened without interrupting. At last the call ended and the phone fell from her hands and clattered to the floor.

"Udayveer would you tell me the truth if I asked you..why did you fake a friendship with me? What did you get by fooling me? Playing with my emotions?" she asked coldly. Her voice concealed so much hurt that Udayveer stood up in shock.
