Review: Mickey Virus could do better with a tighter script

Comment Share Text size: A A A
October 25, 2013 09:39 IST

Manish Paul in Mickey VirusMickey Virus gets better only in the second half, according to Paloma Sharma.

Written and directed by first-timer Saurabh Verma,Mickey Virus opens with an Eminem lookalike running through the streets of Delhi before he is murdered by mysterious assailants.

The film then cuts to a boardroom full of high-ranking police officials who are informed that the murdered man is an addition to a long list of hackers who came to Delhi for an unknown assignment. ACP Siddhant (Manish Chaudhary), the cop in charge of the case, is looking for a street-smart hacker who can help him solve the case. Enter Mickey Arora aka Mickey the Virus (Manish Paul).

Mickey is a perfect specimen for the study of the vella (good-for-nothing) lifestyle -- he never seems to be in college, doesn't have a job, has to be made to look after his kaddu-obsessed mother's grocery shop and is allergic to any form of work. However, Mickey is a brilliant hacker -- which is why ACP Siddhant forces him to work for the police and ends up endangering Mickey's life.

Not that much was going on in Mickey's life, anyway.

Mickey and his friends Floppy (Raghav Kakkar), Pancho (Vikesh Kumar) and Chutney (Puja Gupta) do only three other things except hacking -- watching po*n, drinking straight from the bottle, eating 'chowmein' from a stall named "Michael Jackshein" and watching po*n (and did I mention watching po*n?).

Mickey has designed a video game character called Kung Fu Chameli -- who is his idea of the perfect woman. Eventually he does meet a real life version of her (Elli Avram) and, in order to meet her again, he hacks into classified databases to find out her details and randomly show up at her place of work and home.

Not creepy at all.

Mickey Virus is more (melo)drama than comedy and the thriller half of it kicks in only after the interval. The first half drags on with Mickey's obsession with the real Kung Fu Chameli and their relationship.

Although the characters do indulge in hacking and police work (both of which are essential for the story), the focus of the first half of the film remain Elli Avram's midriff and glossed lips.

The second half of the film gets a lot better in comparison when the mystery begins to unfold.

But not many would want to wait around after an hour of procrastination on the part of Mickey and the director while the dialogues, filled with forced techno-slang, inflict metal wounds on the audience.

Manish Paul deserves a pat on the back, considering that this is only his first film as a lead.

That said, Mickey Virus should have ideally been played by Ranbir Kapoor, given the falling-in-love-and-coming-of-age theme of the film.

Similarly, Elli Avram could've been replaced by any Indian actress, but then, like Chutney says to Mickey in the film, "Gori chamdi dekhi nahi ki phisal gaye."

The real heroes of the film, however, are Manish Chaudhary and Varun Badola, ie, ACP Siddhant and Inspector Bhalla.

The two of them have impeccable comic timing but never shy away from building the suspense either. They could've served as a good example for the leading pair. The much-touted song from the Mickey Virus soundtrack, Pyaar China ka maal hai, seems more like a wannabeEmotional Attyachaar than a song in itself.

Mickey Virus is based on an interesting idea, the plot is good and the film is relevant at a time when cyber crime is increasing.

However, with weak direction, even the best of stories cannot be told well. This 130-minute venture takes too long to set the tone of things and could definitely use a shorter, tighter script.

Mickey Virus is two films divided by an interval. The first half is a marathon of the now (thankfully) defunct TV show Dil Mil Gaye and the second is a suave, well-scripted suspense.

If you have time to spare and the strength to tolerate the first half of the film, book your tickets now.

Mickey Virus movie review: Manish Paul's debut film is not a wannabe Vicky Donor!

One can't help comparing the two VJ-turned-actors, but if you walk into the theatre expecting Manish Paul's debut to be anything like Ayushmann Khurrana's Vicky Donor, you will be proved wrong...

The similarity between Mickey Virus and Vicky Donor ends with the backdrop of Delhi and the Punjabi dialect the heroes speak. And, of course, the fact that you might just like Manish Paul's acting debut as much as you did Ayushmann Khurrana's. Mickey Virus is not just a comedy; it's an almost-perfect comic-thriller.Mickey Arora (Manish Paul), a street smart and lazy Delhi boy, a harmless computer hacker, is sought by the Delhi police to help the law track down a group of dangerous hackers, Bhram. This aimless boy-man is happy doing vellagiri with his set of friends - Chutney, Floppy and Pancho - and is content to create computer viruses sitting at his mother's grocery shop. Mickey finds his dream girl in a vegetable market - enter Kamayani George (Bigg Boss 7s Elli Avram).

The film's premise is explained by what Mickey himself says: Ek alsi aadmi ko jab ek mushkil kaam dedo na, toh woh asaan tareeka dhoond hi leta hain.' That's how Mickey manages to get access to the notorious Bhram gang's website in just 60 seconds, leaping through multiple firewalls. What follows is our hero's simple, happy-go-lucky life taking a mad twist and Mickey being embroiled in a tricky theft-murder case.

Manish Paul manages to stand tall even in his first film. He's a natural on camera and nowhere does the anchor overshadow the actor. Manish makes you believe that he is Mickey Arora - an aloof guy who is quite capable of hiding a trick or two up his T-shirt sleeve. If his spontaneous hosting is impressive on the small screen, the actor's spontaneity on the silver screen cannot be missed. Elli Avram's debut on 70mm is glamorous, she's far better than Nargis Fakhri in Rockstaror even Katrina Kaif in her first few films. Elli emotes and looks sexy enough for us to gauge her acting prowess.

The other actor who manages to hold his own is tellyland's Varun Badola as Delhi cop Devendra Bhalla; VB has delivered some perfectly timed dialogues with a punch in true Dilli-andaaz. HopeMickey Virus does the same to Varun's career that Vicky Donor did to the talented Anu Kapoor's. Manish Choudhary as ACP Siddhanth Chauhan will remind you of Aamir Khan from Talaash. The film's writer/director Saurabh Varma has spiced his film with fun, geeky-gizmo one-liners, crazily funny dialogue and cool message T-shirts. Mickey Virus makes a smooth transition from a fun film to a good thriller. While this might not be the perfect comic-thriller, it's almost there, with some minor flaws that don't interfere too much with its watchability.

Manish Paul makes an impressive entry into Bollywood and we certainly wanna watch more of the actor!

The television host turned actor is as entertaining on silver screen

Our critic Rashma Shetty Bali is watching Mickey Virus in theatre right now. She has sent her first impression about the movie. Here is what Rashma says, "Mickey Virus(Manish Paul) a street smart, lazy Delhi boy, and a harmless computer hacker is sought after by the Delhi police to help them track a group of dangerous hacker gang Bhram. This unambitious boy-man is happy doing vellagiri with his set of friends Chutney, Floppy and Pancho who is happy creating viruses while sitting at his mother's grocery shop. Mickey finds his dream girl in a vegetable market shopping - enter Kamayani George (Bigg Boss 7s Elli Avram). The film's premise is explained by one of Mickey's own dialogues in the film ek alsi aadmi ko jab ek mushkil kaam dedo na toh woh asaan tareeka dhoond hi leta hai.' That's how Mickey manages to get access in 60 seconds into the notorious Bhram gangs' multiple firewalls securing the website.

Spiced with some fun Delhi lingo, Punjabi tadka, geeky gizmo oneliners, cool message T-shirts, and an Aamir Khan (in Talaash) look-alike cop Manish Chaudhary, and heartwarming, funny cop Varun Badola - Mickey Virus entertains despite its flaws. But will it be an ultimate entertainer? Do Manish Paul and Elli Avram announce their arrival in Bollywoood with their debut. Watch this space for full review!

Mickey Virus movie review: Cool, crisp and quirky

Oct 25, 2013, IANS:

Film: "Mickey Virus"; Cast: Manish Paul, Eli Avram, Varun Badola, Manish Choudhary; Director: Saurabh Varma

"Mickey Virus" is Bollywood's first full-fledged film on the virtual world. The hero -if we may call Manish Paul's languid lazy vagabondish character that - is a computer hacker, and one who likes to take his time over every punch of the keyboard.

Mercifully, debutant director Saurabh Varma's film moves in a mood defiantly opposite to the hero's indolent indiscretions. Tightly-scripted, cleverly-worded and arrestingly encrypted, "Mickey Virus" drags the hackers' hemisphere into the hectic mode.

I am tempted to use computer jargon to describe the ultra-svelte moves that define the virtual progression of this slickly-executed cyber-drama. Alas, I am not as equipped as our debutant hero and his comp-friendly pals (with names like 'Floppy' and 'Chutney') to throw around electronic jargon.

Even if your familiarity with the virtual world is minimal, "Mickey Virus" makes for enjoyable viewing. It's voguish, vibrant, vital and viral, and yet extremely fastidious about keeping the plot above the temptation of throwing virtual weight around.

First and foremost, this is a well-woven thriller about an average 20-something Delhi dude who falls in love and falls into a cyber-trap and hits his head into a scam that could destroy his life.

To reveal any more of the plot would be akin to giving away the film's USPs. Suffice to say that Varma knows his cinema as closely as he knows his computer. He weaves cinematic elements into a kind of one-night-in-the-life-of ... tale that spins in dizzying motions.

Delhi, that favourite city of many recent, decent and indecent, dramas and thrillers, is again caught in sinister provocative postures. The roads and lanes, Nehru Place or a chowmein outlet, every outdoor location has a story to tell.

Strange, how Manish, switching effortlessly from his cocky on-stage antics on reality shows to a kind of languorous screen appearance that is dangerously close to Ranbir Kapoor's Sid-meets-"Besharam" act, pulls out all stops to make Mickey look real to the point of being your next door neighbour's son, much in the same way as Ayushmann Khurrana.

Only, Manish is goofier, more adventurous in his exploration of adrift urbanite. He is undoubtedly an interesting actor with an unpremeditated screen presence.

Let's put it this way -- if over-instruction obstructs Mickey's dexterity on the computer, then too many rehearsals are sure to spoil Manish's camera-friendliness.

"Mickey Virus" gives the debutant a chance to romance the dark side of youngistan with unselfconscious fluidity. There is also a cutely written romance woven into the hacker's tale. Eli Avram currently locked away in "Bigg Boss" house shows up as a manifestation of ... well, Manish's virtual fantasy named Kungfu Chameli. There is an endearing courtship plan blessedly not over-punctuated by songs. God Forbid! Manish's Mickey probably doesn't even watch Bollywood films!

For a newcomer to shoulder a thriller adeptly there must be some accomplished actors around him for support. Manish gets his namesake Manish Choudhary as a stern placid police officer who needs Mickey's hacking skills to track an international gang. Choudhary is in fine (uni)form. But the very talented Varun Badola as Choudhary's assistant is a scene stealer. Mouthing the film's catchiest lines casually, Varun brings more to his role than what's written for the character.

The rest of the supporting cast too gets into the mood of the plot.

Undoubtedly, "Mickey Virus" is Manish's made-to-order vehicle. He casually invites us into his suddenly-troubled world and then persuades us to cringe at the progressive crisis built around Delhi's cyber stratosphere. The uniqueness of the plot works effectively in covering up the loopholes and rather embarrassing coincidences that bridge various dramatic elements in the plot. It does get far-flung. But the leaps are made without fractured bones.

Quirky, colourful, agile and hectic, "Mickey Virus" is a 'virtually' interesting way for Manish and his director to start their respective careers. This is an oddball of a movie that tries to make sense of the senseless whirligig of urban internet-driven lifestyles. What the 'hack'! Just go out there and have fun.

Director: Saurabh Varma

Indian Express rating: **

Mickey is a hacker. But he is also a slacker. It's not like he wants to either fall in love or do anything else that's constructive, but certain events force him into both situations. On the one hand, there is a lovely lass, and on the other, a gang of cyber thieves. Which way will the fellow with the fastest-acting-virus-on-a-pen-drive swing?

'Mickey Virus' teams a debutant director and a first time lead actor, and a fine supporting cast, and comes up with a film that holds attention for some time, before it gets stretched into a too-long second act. First off, so many films recently have come up with their version of Delhi boys just mooching about, that I've been zoning out.

What I liked about this bunch is that they are not trying too hard, and except for a couple of exaggerations, seem just right for their milieu. They are all appropriately named : apart from Manish Paul's cocky layabout Mickey the Virus, there is Gupta as Chutney, the lone girl in the group but holding her own, Kakkar as Floppy, and Kumar as Pancho. And Nitesh Pandey, as the Professor, who knows everything.

The cyber 'chors' are also killers. A couple of cops, played by Manish Chaudhary and Varun Badola, shanghai Mickey into cracking the case. A murder follows, and suddenly it's not just fun-and-games. What's also nice is that this is a Delhi that stays away from the tourist slide-shows most 'Dilli films' become: the grungy parts of Nehru Place infested by the computer trade walas and the fake part walas and the cheap knocked together laptops walas are all on display, and our always-connected-hackers roam around this territory with their USB sticks and fastest fingers, speaking the lingo.

Story: The cops are cracking a cyber crime case and they hire hacker Mickey to crack the plot. It opens a lethal can of worms that no ordinary anti-virus can kill.

Review: We aren't internet keedas here, but let's try cracking into Mickey's (Manish) world of codes, crypts and consoles. This one isn't so deadly that we can't decode, or so simple that we just download and ESC (read: escape). So, risk it and hit ENTER!

The Delhi cops, headed by ACP Siddhanth (Chaudhari) and inspector Bhalla who can't tell a 'hawker' from a 'hacker' (Varun Badola) are investigating a case on cyber crime, where hackers are getting killed in broad daylight. They suspect a hound of hackers who are running this racket, and the only way to vandalize their plot is to find a hacker who can outsmart them and decrypt their devious designs.

There comes Mickey, the fairly unambitious, lazy Delhi boy, whose brain operates faster than any high-speed internet, and his zubaan needs a 'backspace' at all times. He is popular as 'Kung-Fu Chameli' in cyberspace, and strangely, he meets his woman of web dreams, Kamayani (Elli) in reality.

The cops hire Mickey, but as he unscrambles the case he gets 'spammed' by a well-programmed series of crimes, and he desperately needs to hit Ctrl+S (read: Save) before they take the 'Mickey' out of him.

Manish is apt for the role, he makes a good debut with confidence and promise. He flavour his lines with Dilliwala twang, though in scenes his repetitive expressions need to 'refresh'. From Mickey's hack-gang, Floppy (Rahgav Kakkar) is funny, and Chutney (Puja) is impressive. Elli looks like an animated creation out of a cyber-game. Performance - never mind! Varun Badola kills the other viruses in this game with his brilliant act.

Varma allows his characters to flourish in wit and humour. The plot is intelligent; there are laughs (sample: a tee printed - 'Jab Tak Hai Trojan'), some suspense and surprises too. Though direction is not error-free, it could've been more innovative and he often tips the balance between comedy and thriller.

This virus won't crash your system. Watch it!

MICKEY VIRUS

Dar Motion Pictures and Awesome Films Pvt. Ltd.'s Mickey Virus (UA) is the story of hacker Mickey (new hero Manish Paul). He is hired by police inspector Siddhant Chauhan (Manish Chaudhari) to hack a website and get details of a gang operating in India. Two members of the gang have died under mysterious circumstances and as there are no clues, the police are at their wits' end while trying to solve the murder cases.

Even as Mickey is trying to help the police, a third murder takes place - Kamayani George alias Kate George (new heroine Elli Avram) is killed. As luck would have it, Kamayani was Mickey's girlfriend and she had sought his help to transfer a huge amount of money into an account, by hacking into the website of the bank she claim ed to be working for. To Mickey's horror, she was murdered in her home soon after he had left the place after dropping her there.

Since the investigating police officer is Siddhant Chauhan and his assistant, inspector Devender Bhalla (Varun Badola), the needle of suspicion soon points to Mickey. But Mickey has left the scene of crime as he wants to undo the transaction of the money transfer. Mickey seeks the help of his friends, Chutney alias Shalu Sharma (Puja Gupta), Floppy alias Manjot Gill (Raghav Kakkar) and Pancho alias Palwinder (Vikesh Kumar). Also aiding Mickey is his teacher (Nitesh Pandey).

What happens in the end? Who has murdered Kamayani? Why had Kamayani asked Mickey to transfer funds by hacking? Who had committed the earlier two murders? Is Mickey able to help the police? Does Mickey succeed in preventing the huge transfer of funds by reversing his act of online transfer?

The suspense thriller, scripted by Saurabh Varma, is taut and keeps the audience engrossed. The story is interesting but, by its very nature, it is also very technical. Since a lot of computer jargon is used in the drama, it would keep the computer-illiterate population away from the cinemas. The screenplay is fast-paced, and writer Saurabh Varma has taken care to simplify matters to a large extent. The several turns and twists in the film, especially after interval, keep the audience involved throughout. Having said that, it must be added that the drama runs on a single track because of which the usual ingredients of a mass entertainer are relegated to the background. For instance, although there is a romantic track, it is half-baked. The humour element is woven into the plot and several of the jokes do entertain but it must also be added that the comedy is more class-appealing than mass-appealing, which is also what the film is. Besides, the hacker's job is shown to be too easy to be true. To people who don't understand computers and also to those who do, it would appear that a hacker can do just about anything with the aid of a computer. This is probably the feeling the viewer gets when Mickey achieves just about anything by hacking and also when Floppy helps Mickey chase Babloo merely by locating Babloo's whereabouts, on the Internet. This is, perhaps, the biggest drawback of the screenplay and drama. Dialogues are very well-written and the humour element comes across through them.

All in all, debut-making writer Saurabh Varma has written an engaging script even though it is uni-dimensional, class-appealing and very simplistic.

Manish Paul makes a promising debut and impressively flirts with the camera, making himself endearing. His free acting gives the impression that he understands the medium of cinema and knows the craft of acting. He is a welcome addition to the list of heroes. Elli Avram makes a fair debut and acts confidently. She has looked slightly older than required. Manish Chaudhari is very efficient in the role of ACP Siddhant Chauhan. As his assistant, Varun Badola is pretty effective and endearing too. Nitesh Pandey lends good support as Mickey's teacher. Puja Gupta leaves a fine mark in the role of Chutney. As Floppy, Raghav Kakkar shines. Vikesh Kumar is quite nice as Pancho. Rohit Pathak (as security guard' Babloo), Ashish Verma (as Sankatmochan), Bachchan Pachera (as the building security guard), Jagdish Rajpurohit (as Mickey's boss), Amit Vashisht (as Antoo Bhaiya), Raghav Gupta, Gaurav Verma, Ranjan Kumar and Hemant Kumar Dixit (all four as software sellers), Sharmila (as the bank receptionist), Devender Chaudhary (as Dinesh Jakhar) and Naresh Gosain (as the Haryanvi taxi driver) lend able support. Dean Alexandrou (as the first hacker), Ashish Ranglani (as the failed hacker in the police station), Neeraj (as truck driver) and the rest are alright.

Saurabh Varma does a fine job of the narration in his debut attempt at direction. Hanif Shaikh's music and lyrics are alright. However, the absence of a hit song or two is felt. His background music is quite nice. Jazmin Oza and Mansi Aggarwal's choreography goes well with the film's mood but there's nothing which stands out. Action scenes, choreographed by Pradyumna Kumar Swain and Javed-Aejaz (climax scenes), are fair. Anshuman Mahaley's cinematography is very nice. Suman Roy Mahapatra's art direction makes the film look real. Archit D. Rastogi's editing is sharp.

On the whole, Mickey Virus is a good entertainer but very very simplistic. Hence, a section of the computer-literate world will not appreciate the over-simplification of the job of a hacker; as for the computer-illiterate audience, the drama, in any case, would be Latin and Greek for them and, so, incomprehensible. Besides, the extremely dull pre-Diwali period will take its toll on the film. Commerially, it will not be able to do much at the box-office.

MICKEY VIRUS Collects 1.65 cr Nett On Friday

Yesterday several films hit the screens and that was expected during a dull weekend of pre diwali period. As expected, much hyped small budget film ''Mickey Virus'' is leading the pack as it has got the best release in 1100 screens among all 5-6 new releases.

''Mickey Virus'' managed good numbers in Mumbai and Delhi but still film underperformed considering release size of 1100-1200 screens. Film collected 1.65 cr nett on Friday and now on good growth in next two days can take it close to 7 cr nett weekend.

''Sooper Se Ooper'' collected close to 7 lakhs and ''Ishk Actually'' managed only 6 lakhs which is pathetic. ''Wake Up India'' and ''Dilli Gang'' failed to even register anything at box office.
