Hgg bhai, I have read the article long time ago and yeah it seems as per the article that the novel wasn't about a love story but I think that's the first point of difference between this show being an adaptation'. I think character names and settings and the mere sypnosis of the novel is used..not much else.
But this was made clear by SLB himself..again referring to his tag line that he started the show with..'mukammal mohabbat ki daastan'. This in itself says that it's a show about a love story. I don't think the novel, if followed exactly word for word would work as a tv show and for viewers.
In today's times, people do a lot for the society..samaaj sewa and all. Yes, its never going to be enough as there is sooo much that needs improving with the system and the environment we live in but brutal truth is that no one wants to see that in a fictional based show. There are shows like Satyamev jayate' that focus on all this.
Perhaps the novel didn't end up with a happy ending also because the love story was never the centre point of it..like the person has said in that article.
But I think we need to let go of any comparison to the novel apart from names etc. Yes, some of us set out to watch this show with the expectations of the novel but to be honest, majority didn't. Majority from day one were looking for a love story...a love story that will face trial and tribulations but will end up with them being united and happy together.
SP are doing their bit towards trying to change people's mindset towards women and society rules' but this does not mean every show has to be about this only. Even then SC has shown a lot of things which defy the society.
Firstly with Kumud's constant disagreements about how people take advantage of things in the name of religion. Back in the days, a show would not have shown a married woman denying to keep the vrath of teej'. Today we have two varieties of contrast being shown where both explain that we make the society, the society does not make us.
First was that Kumud refused to keep the vrath as her marriage was pretty much non existent and why keep it for a man like Pramad.
Second was in DABH...Sandhya forgot to keep the vrath! Lol! Now perhaps in a different generation, Tv channels wouldn't even dare to show such things in fear of how the audiences would react but now its acceptable.
End of the day..now if we are shown how a woman puts up with all the torture and then leads a life of self sacrifice only to keep the society happy...the audiences will not accept this.
End of the day..these serials are made for the masses..so majority of people who watch it are the modern society and international viewers who will not accept that the backward ways of society being shown.
Uneducated women, domestic abuse on women...all this will not be tolerated by viewers and SP have actually tackled a lot of these issues pretty well and always are giving a good social message to change the mindset of those who are still backwards.
