It was an event that had the city of Durban (South Africa) excited days before it began.And all of it reached a crescendo when the first ever SAIFTA (South Africa India Film and Television Awards) Awards were held in the city.One of the main purposes of the event was to showcase Durban and the Province of Kwa-Zulu Natal as a destination for Bollywood shoots and international travel.The event promoted employment,skills transfer,economic development and cultural exchange between the two countries,and was backed by the KZN Department of Economic Development and Tourism and TKZN.SAIFTA is the brainchild of Celebrity Locker Entertainment,helmed by Hemant Thacker,Kedhar Gawde and Rakshanda Khan.Kedhar is the creative director and official spokesperson for the event,and also the one behind the unique property.
The red carpet saw many South African celebrities and TV stars,as well as popular Indian faces.We spotted TV actors Mona Singh,Ravi Dubey,Sargun Mehta,Aamir Ali and Sanjeeda Sheikh.From Bollywood,we saw names like Madhuri Dixit Nene,Priyanka Chopra,Ranveer Singh,Sidharth Malhotra,John Abraham,Suniel Shetty,Sanjay Gupta,Amy Jackson,Abhay Deol and others walked into a stadium packed with over 6,000 spectators.
Sidharth set things rolling with a performance to Ishq Wala Love,followed by performances by a few South African stars.Karan Johar and Dia Mirza hosted the first part of the evening.Tatum Keshwar joined Karan later on.Also entertaining fans were Madhuri,Ranveer and Priyanka with their performances.In between the awards and the winners speeches,John picked an award for Youth Icon of the year: South Africa.A special Madiba Award was given to Nelson Mandela,received by his granddaughter Ndileka Mandela.
