Debate championship V - JUDGES thread

Congrats to everyone for participating in the DC. 👏

Our 5 Judges for this Championship are:

sowmyaa, Maya_M, Minnie, Ms. Bholi Bhali and Princess

There are three categories which need to be awarded prizes:

1) Best Debator

2) Runner Up

3) Winning Team

Indicators of a good debator/team

- Points expressed in a clear and persuasive manner

- Theories backed up extensively with real life examples

- Strong conviction in the side they were defending

NOTE: This thread is for JUDGES and Organizers ONLY. Judges, please post your votes directly in this thread.

Contestants, please DO NOT PM the Judges or Organizers if you disagree with the decisions taken here.

First of all, thanks Tanaz and Maryam and Mythilli 👏 for organizing this debate championship. We all fellow DMers always like to follow championships rounds and I know it is not that easy task to organize Debate Championships...so hats off to three of you 👏 and also thank you all the participant for your time and energy 👏 👏 you put in arguing to and forth, we enjoyed it and it really makes DM more vibrant and fun place to visit for rest of us. I hope and wish to see you each one of you, Sabihey, Sania, Samyukta, Shilu, Sunny and Ria more often here on DM and take part in all the general threads. You all rock! 👍🏼

The topic of this championship was a very tricky one, at least it was to me, I thought of it and found myself neutral on it first. I figured few cases on both the sides where it was necessary to believe in it. Any strong arguments could have convinced me on their side and this was evident from the opening statement from both the sides; Evilgenius_S.S (Sania) and Swordfishh (Ria) both made excellent opening statements and provided a stronger foundation for their fellow team members to debate on it.

Here goes my verdict for the proposed categories.

1) Best Debater: Shikara(Shilu). For her logical and persuasive way of debating style.

2) Runner Up: Evilgenius_S.S(Sania). For her efforts on both opening and closing statements and follow up with ample examples.

3) Winning Team: The "FOR" Team. For their coordinated and consistent efforts by every team members in arguing and sealing the championship title.

To Organizers: Before posting my judgement on the arguments today I would like to thank Tanaz, Maryam and Mythili for organizing this Debate Championship and for choosing a title apt in today's time.

To Debaters: Thanks to all debaters for taking part in this Debate championship. Your thoughts and participation is much appreciated👏. Hope to debate with you in future. I know it is easy to pass judgment than actual debating but please take my judgment in right spirit.

My Views

'FOR' team: More than one opening statement exhibited lack of co-ordination among members of 'FOR' team still since the arguments were effectual I couldn't pass it. Many valid points and simple illustrations made an interesting reading. All three debaters made effective points and rebuttals. A remarkable concluding statement👏.

'AGAINST' team: Nice attempt in the opening statement. Some of the arguments looked more like personal views without substantial proof. Some of the illustrations are still disputed. The team could have used simple illustrations to make the argument more effective.

My Verdict

Best Debater: Shikara for simple yet effective arguments and logical reasoning.👏👏👏

Runner Up: It is a tie between Evilgenius_S.S and and Ash_sabihey. Inspite of lack of ample support from the team Evigenius made a good effort with an opening statement and thereafter standing by the views. Ash_sabihey made a sincere effort to proof her points with references and succeeded in it. 👏👏

Winning Team: The 'FOR' Team for their strong and spirited arguments and rebuttals. 👏

Following the suit of fellow judges before me, first I want to thank organizers for organising this wonderful debate and enabling us to read such a varied povs on a subject that has always been controversial since time immemorial.

Both parties presented persuasive and clear point of views.All the arguments made very very interesting read.

But I feel that the debators could use more questions as rebuttals to present their point in a concise but sure manner. Second, some of the examples were not substantiated enough and the rebuttals could have been more effective had that been done.
Other than that, excellent points, very good debate.

Winner: Shikhara: Excellent rebuttals, terrific examples, very clear concept. The arguments were simple, and to the point. Very persuasive.

Runner up: Evilgenius_S.S: Impressive opening and closing statements, and inspite of lack of enough support from the rest of the team, carried the fight to the finish. Excellent.

Winning Team: 'For team'. Excellent opening by swordfish and clever closing by Shikhara, fine rebuttals and excelent examples. Congratulations !!!.

Thanks for making me part of this debate championship. Very well conducted, and indeed a very different a thought provoking topic.

Now to the debaters: Great work, both the teams were amazing. And it really gave me a hard time to decide the best one.

The For Team stumbled a little in the beginning but were strong till the very end.

The Against team, came with strong debating points; however, I saw more contribution from a few team member then the other.

All were excellent but the debaters which stood out were Shikara, Evilgenius and Ash_sabihey. Smarterdesikid came up with great counter points and were well replied by Ash.
