Though most of us focus on subjugation of women, there is also the other side of coin which is definition of masculinity and how cultures define how man should behave or react to situations. This latter side also impacts gender relations, but not always focused on.

You are right. But it is still not right that women are accepted or tolerated as second class citizens. True freedom is when a person is able to live and behave the way they want. Every person on this earth has rights, no matter where, no matter who.

This serial is based in ahemedabad and beleive me in gujju culture ( ahemedabad is a city in the state of gujarat ) such families are comman. Ofcourse serials exaggerate a lot and over dramatise things but they take inspiration from reality ... This exists ...it is changing slowly but it still exists in various households in india.

A shame on humanity, then.

It is sad, but yes, even in these day and age, they do exist in some families in smaller towns. The DIL's cannot even move a muscle without MIL's permission.

That's really horrible. How awful to be in a life like that. What about the husbands? Are they OK for their wives to be treated like this?

I hope so. If Sanaya in the form of Chhan Chhan, can change the mind set of people. But from what I have read of the responses in this post so far, it is a daunting task. To change what has been steeped too deep in tradition... but you are right. It starts with a small step. It is no mean feat, but we can take courage from history. Neil Armstrong, Rosa Parks, Gandhi...

Thank God it's not like that! I'm against anyone doing anything against their will. If the DIL don't mind (and are not doing it out of fear, or force) then I guess it should be OK.

its not done like this in urban families as UB .. can be found may be in villages .. so it is really exaggerated here ..

so dont worry 😃

Even these girls' parents don't have their priorities straight. You hear of every daughter's father in India marrying her off based on the how much property the guy's family has or what kind of a job he has. When the real question should be how will you be treating my daughter after the two days of honeymoon period is over.

I know that for myself and my future kids, I would prefer to live on rent my whole life in a one-room house with my husband and live and love freely, rather than live a worse life than a prisoner's in a luxurious mansion.

People in India need to realize what's more important. Money comes and goes. It can be earned as long as you are happy.

I think it all comes down to financial independence. Even if I live on a dollar a day, I wouldn't take a penny from my in-laws ever.

All these Indian Bahus that we are feeling pity for, should get up and go get a job even if you are cleaning toilets it's better than living off someone else's money. Then all these problems wouldn't arise.

Financial independence is important and functional. But if you don't have the confidence and self esteem to live your life the way you want, then all the money in the world is not going to make a difference. And yeah, I heard (but couldn't believe!!) that some parents marry off their daughters to families who have money. I don't understand this, though. Don't the daughters have any say who they want to get married to? I thought arranged marriage was a thing of the past in India.
