So,
  • can't go out
  • can't go for honeymoon
  • can't have friends over
  • can't wear clothes that you want
  • can't eat with your hubby
  • can't talk unless given permission
  • be subservient to MIL and hubby and his family
  • can't breathe unless MIL says so
  • have no jovial interactions with family just for the sake of
  • take permission from mommy dearest in spite of being an adult (pls don't use the respect angle here, irrelevant)
  • ...
Is this what being married (in India) means??

I'm pretty sure this is an extreme case and things like these do not exist anymore???
Please enlighten me!

They do exist ...in a lot of non metro towns where joint families do exist , a lot of this is the norm. In a serial ofcourse its shown in a more extreme way but trust me its a reality.

I've been wanting to make a post on this but you did so thank you. Someone who is from India and knows their culture can help us better. Does such extremism actually exist even now? Isn't this going a bit too far, especially the honeymoon bit? According to them, bahus going out alone is wrong. Fine. Why not with their husbands on their honeymoon?
And what's wrong with going to your maayka?! 😲

Exactly! I don't know why they are treated as less than their own beings. Just because they are married! They still have their own personalities, hopes, dreams... Their own identity.

Yeah, that's what I thought, too. But apparently not. But for sure this is an exaggeration, eh?

  • can't wear clothes that you want
  • can't eat with your hubby
  • be subservient to MIL and hubby and his family
  • have no jovial interactions with family just for the sake of

Most of the girls who marry into such households are conditioned for this as come from similar households ...they know no different , the real probelms happen when you come from a free thinking household and then marry into such a family ...that is when disaster strikes , i guess the crux of our show channchann.
