I agree that Lata Mangeshkar is one of the greatest singers of all time, but I wonder why Indians are obssessed with having female voices similar to hers?
Hindi Cinema always had a image for its lead actress, sweet in nature, good looking and a voice that brings out the above qualities
Compare this to a husky voice or a heavy voice, generally that gets used in folk songs or in seductive songs or item numbers or sometimes sad songs. In our cinema very rarely is the actress portrayed as a seductress or the main character goes out and sings item numbers
So if there are 5 songs sung by the lead actress, 3 would be by the lady with a sweet voice 1 maybe by an item singer and 1 sad song or folk song
Generally lyrics for the non-item numbers are generally sensible, so even if the item number is famous, it gets forgotten pretty easily. So what gets remembered is the famous songs and those generally are by the lady with sweet voice
Sunidhi Chauhan got very lucky with the decline of Lataji and Ashaji, the trend of item numbers and a decent enough voice. Ashaji used to be in Sunidhi's role earlier when success was rare for her.(some blame Ashaji's lack of success on Lataji but this stereotype worked against her)
Has Lataji benefitted from this? yes and I hope the future generations also go this way
I hope we stay with the trend, although I am stereotyping here, but I can only take the husky, hoarse voice once in a while
PS: I dont think Nihira fits into the mould of Lataji, she is more closer to Ashaji, Nihira has a much sharper voice pretty much like Ashaji, but Nihira is not able to pull off those seductive numbers like Ashaji, maybe with time her voice will stand in between those two
Shreya has the same sweet voice maybe closer to Alkaji but sweeter and more polished
I dont want to say anything about Himani Kapoor, I am trying not to say bad things as a new year resolution😆😆😆
