Don't even get me started on Indian immigration - I have seen how they deal with the poor labourers returning after 3 years of hard work, and how they try to fleece them. And my experience at the airport hasn't been very nice either - I live abroad but I visit India at least twice every year. I have an Indian passport, but whenever I go to India, the immigration officials ask me stupid questions like "Why have you come to India?" It's my country - do I need a reason to visit it? And the last time I was in India, it was even worse. I had gone to see my mother who had been in the hospital. When I was returning, I was stopped by a customs guy (customs when you are leaving????), and grilled about my reasons for coming to India twice within 3 months. They had my bag singled out - one single piece of cabin luggage with only my clothes. The only reason I had to check it in was because it contained my face wash and cough syrup (no gels or liquids in the cabin). Can you imagine my state - having to leave my mother in the hospital to return to work and being treated like a smuggler? It took all my strength not to cry when that officer asked me "yahan kyon aayee thee?" like I was some roadside beggar. In another instance the officer had looked at my American visa and said " Jab 10 saal ka american visa hai to Bharat kyon aatey ho?" These are not isolated incidents. So many people have had similar experiences.
I have travelled abroad to many place, and I have always been treated politely and cheerfully.(On my last trip to NY, the officer spoke to me in Hindi. He was a white American who had lived in India for 3 years.) I have seen how they hardly ever question their own citizens. In India, it's just the opposite - I dread landing at Delhi airport more than having my teeth pulled out without an anesthetic.
These guys mentioned in the report may have been doing their duty, but in my experience and in that of a lot of other people's, the immigration and customs people have just been obnoxious.
