THE HEART KNOWS
CHAPTER 50 (A)
Arnav was reading the contract details of their latest deal when Khushi entered his cabin. He looked at her and a smile crossed his face.
"Good afternoon, Mrs. Raizada," he greeted her.
She slumped on the couch and said, "Mrs. Raizada is angry with you. That is why I came here."
He raised one of his eyebrows and said, "Achcha? Khushi mujhse gussa nahi hai?" [Really? Khushi is angry with me?]
"Woh bhi thodi si gussa hai." [She is also a little angry.]
"Tho uss anger ko kam karne ke liye kya karna chahiye?" [So what should I do to lessen the anger?]
"Gussa main hoon. Aur tumara sawaal ka jawaab bhi main hi doon? Unbelievable." [I am angry. Should I be the one to answer your questions? Unbelievable.]
"Help me a little, Khushi," he pleaded like a child.
She turned her face and pointed to her cheek.
He smiled.
He got up from his chair and went towards her. He sat beside her and hugged her. He pulled her closer and kissed her cheek, her eyes and her forehead.
She placed one of her hands on his cheek and said, "I love you."
"I love you, too."
She placed her head over his chest and hugged him.
"Are you still angry?" he asked her.
"Nahi," she replied. "Un logon ne tume bahut pareshan kiya?" [No. Did those people trouble you a lot?]
"Kis ke liye?" [For what?]
"For the deal."
"Yeah. A little."
"Sab theek ho jayega." [Everything will be fine.]
He felt guilty for not calling her even once. He didn't plan for it. He thought that he would finish everything and return soon. Somehow, it had not happened.
"I am sorry, jaan."
"Baar baar sorry bolna bandh karo. [Stop saying sorry everytime.] It's okay." She paused for a while and said, "When I returned from the airport, I had a strange feeling that something was not right. And then you didn't call me and I was very frightened."
"I am here with you right now."
She hugged him tighter and said, "I know. Patha hai? The last three days I have been having the same dream everyday. It was like a nightmare and I was not able to forget it."
"What was it about?" he asked her as he lay on the couch and pulled her over him.
She heard his steady heartbeat and she said, "It was about you. You were sitting in some dark place and…."
She stopped in the middle.
"And?" he prompted.
"And you were crying," she finished slowly. "I couldn't bear it. The pain I saw in your eyes was so intense that it brought tears to my eyes too."
She lifted her head and looked at him. His eyes were closed.
She touched his cheek and asked, "If something is bothering you, you will tell me, won't you?" Before he could reply, she said, "Because it is not good to keep things within you."
His phone rang. Shilpha called him to tell him that he had to attend a meeting with a client. He asked Aman and Akash to attend the meeting.
"I am with you, jaan. Hamesha."
"Hamesha."
"And if something is bothering me, I will tell you." He kissed her nose and asked, "So, tell me about everything that happened when I was not here."
That was when she remembered about Siddharth's confession.
"Siddhu ne di se sab kuch kehdiya," she told him. [Siddhu told everything to di.]
"Kya? I mean, sach mein?" he asked in shock and surprise. [What? I mean, really?]
She told him about the whole incident and he listened to every word and noticed every little reaction of hers. He had missed her during the past three days. He promised himself that whatever the situation was, he would never ever leave her or hurt her for something which was never her mistake.
"Di ne kuch kaha?" he asked her. [Did di say anything?]
"No. I don't know what she is thinking. It is not easy to forget everything and move on, Arnav. But still Siddhu is worth the risk. Actually, he is not a risk. He is sure to give her the best life that she deserves." She kissed his cheek and said, "Just like I have."
They stayed in each other's arms for a while. Khushi had to leave as she got a call from Siddharth's office saying that the client needed her to do some changes. She told him that she had to go.
Before leaving, she kissed his forehead and said, "I love you, baby."
"I love you too, jaan."
It was five in the evening and Arnav couldn't sit in his office any longer. He called Akash and NK to take care of the work and went home. In the morning, when he started for office, Anjali and nani were a bit disappointed with him for not calling them even once.
"Chote, you are early?" nani said.
"Just a bit tired, nani. Di kahaan hai?" [Just a bit tired, nani. Where is di?]
"Room mein. Anjali bitya ne aaj office gayi nahi." [In her room. Anjali bitya didn't go to office today.]
Before he went to Anjali's room, he apologized to nani and mami.
He knocked the door and went in. Anjali was doing something with her mobile.
"Di….!"
She looked up from the mobile.
Her eyes went to the clock and she asked, "You are very early today?"
"Aap se kuch kehna tha." [I had to tell you something.]
He sat in front of her on her bed.
"Lekin uske pehle tum batao ki tumne kyun ek phone bhi nahi ki? London mein telephone booths nahi tha kya? [But before that tell me why you didn't call even once. Weren't there telephone booths in London?] And even then, you called only Aman."
He lowered his eyes and said, "I didn't go to London, di."
Anjali's eyes widened. To say she was shocked would be an understatement.
"You didn't go to London?"
He shook his head and said, "And I did not call Aman. In fact, I did not speak with anybody."
"Aman ne kaha…."
"Aman said that as he didn't want to increase your worries. He was the only one who knew that I didn't go to London. Like you, he is oblivious to all the other things."
"Where did you go, chote?"
He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "I'll tell you later."
"Tume kuch hua nahi na? [Nothing happened to you, right?] You are alright, aren't you?"
He held her hand and said, "Main theek hoon, di. Mujhe kuch nahi hua." [I am fine, di. Nothing happened to me.]
"Don't ever do this again. Understand?"
"Promise, di. Agli baar yeisa nahi hoga," he said and hugged his sister. [Promise, di. It will not happen again.]
When she felt that her brother was fine, she moved away from the hug and looked at him.
"Di, have you thought over what Siddharth told you?"
He dropped the second bomb and it was Anjali's turn to be shocked again.
"Tume yeh sab patha hai?" [You know everything?]
"Haan, di." [Yes, di.]
She remembered about the time when Arnav wanted to call Siddharth as 'bhaiya' and Khushi had said no.
"Khushi ko bhi patha hai?" [Khushi also knows?]
"Khushi and Siddharth have no secrets, di."
She was silent.
"Siddarth bahut achche hai, di. There has been no one else other than you in his life. He is not like Shyam. He will stay with you till the end. He will make you happy. But still, I will not rush you into making any decisions. You have just now come out of your shell and I can see that you are happy being independent. When you feel that you need someone to share your life with, then I can assure you, di. There is nobody better than Siddharth."
After a long pause later, she said, "He wasn't there when I needed him, chote."
He narrowed his eyes. "Kab, di?" [When, di?]
"I was the only girl he spoke with in college and I thought that what we shared was something different."
Arnav wondered whether it meant that his sister had also liked Siddharth from the beginning.
"Then when I needed him the most, he wasn't there. Dadi told me about Shyam but I did not like being forced into a marriage. When she told that our parents would have liked it, I couldn't deny any longer. A couple of days before marriage, I went to college to meet him. I wanted to talk to him. Talking with him has always been the best stress buster and he would give wonderful solutions for everything I asked." Her eyes teared up when she said, "He wasn't there when I went there before the wedding. He wasn't there when I needed him. Now, it is frightening me. I have come out of one mess and I don't know what to do. It is true, chote. I have an odd feeling whenever he moves closer with other people."
This time, Arnav was shocked. It meant that Anjali had liked Siddharth all along but hadn't been able to realize her feelings. If only Siddharth had been there during her last visit to college, both of them would have been happy together. Last visit…. He had to clear her doubts.
"Di, do you know why Siddharth wasn't there?" he asked her.
She shook her heard.
"His mother had an accident. She battled for her life but lost it. Siddharth was the only son and he stayed with his father. He realized that life was short and he planned to tell you his feelings. When he returned to college, your classmates told him that you were married. He didn't deliberately leave you, di. Circumstances made him choose his father. But he did come back."
Anjali eyes watered and her tears travelled down her cheek.
Arnav hugged her and said, "You should have told me about him, di. I would have brought him to you."
"You didn't believe in love and marriage at that time, chote."
He looked in her eyes and said, "Di, I didn't believe in love and marriage. I believe in your happiness." He paused for a second and said, "You could have tried to understand the meaning behind what you both shared, di."
He wiped her tears.
"It is not late, di. You can choose what you wanted in the first place. He will never hurt you. I will tell you again, di. Nobody is forcing you to do anything. Decide what you really want. Even if you say no now, Siddharth will still be waiting for you."
"I need some time to think, chote."
"You have all the time you need."
"Di, if you decide to say yes, warn me before telling him."
"Why?" she asked with a confused expression.
"I am comfortable calling him Siddharth and jiju will be a little difficult. When you warn me, I'll take one of his photos and practice calling him jiju."
She smiled inspite of her tears and said, "Tum pagal ho gaye ho." [You have gone mad.]
"Khushi ka asar." [Because of Khushi.]
"Arey, don't try to make Khushi the reason behind your craziness."
"I love you so much, di."
"Love you too, chote."
