Zoya stayed rooted to the spot as she saw Asad fighting them single-handedly. He was stuck in an impossible situation and there was no one to help him. She would've knocked down a couple of men herself, if it hadn't been for the heavy lehenga she was wearing. She could barely move in it. Still, she picked up a gun she saw lying nearby, planning to use it for self defense. That was when she heard him scream her name and her head whipped towards him.
"RUN, ZOYA!" he shouted again, praying that she would move towards the entrance. He knew he wouldn't be able to hold these men off much longer. Finally, Zoya began to make her way towards the exit. But her path was blocked by one of the many men attacking Asad. Zoya raised the gun and pointed it at him.
"Move" she told him. He took a step towards her. "Move or I'll shoot you!" she cried, but he didn't listen to her and advanced towards her. Zoya made the biggest mistake and pulled the trigger. The sound of the gunshot echoed through the warehouse, bringing Asad's fight to a stop. Everybody turned to look at Zoya, standing in front of the man who was now bleeding profusely from his left shoulder.
Everything happened at once. Half the men around Asad ran towards Zoya, while the rest of them doubled their efforts to fight him off. Zoya, seeing about seven men approaching her from all directions, open fired at them. With five bullets left, she managed to hit three men, while she totally missed the remaining two shots. She was captured and almost immediately felt the cold barrel of a gun pressed against her temple.
"STOP!" the man holding her shouted. Asad stopped fighting and looked over to where Zoya stood at gunpoint. "Stop fighting, or else I'll shoot her" he said. Asad raised his hands above his head as a gesture of surrender.
"I won't fight" he said, his voice quivering with fear. "Don't shoot her. Let her go. Please".
The man laughed. "Look at him" he said, addressing his accomplices. "Shivering like a scared puppy as we have her at our mercy" he chuckled. "All right, I won't shoot her. Not at the moment. But what I don't understand is, why did you come to save her? She's getting married to your brother, right? Where is he? He should have been the one standing in your place, begging us to let her go. But he isn't. Why?"
"That's none of your f**king business" Asad barked at him. "Just let her go".
"You know we can't. But, since you put up such a wonderful fight. Its time we took revenge, don't you think? So. My friends here, will beat you up till you can't differentiate between life and death and you, will not lift a finger to stop them. One move, and we shoot her. Right in front of you. You can kill us later, but she won't be alive to see it. Ready?" he asked and before Asad could utter a word, he'd shouted "start!"
"NO! ASAD!" screamed Zoya, as they began hitting Asad with everything they could find. Fists. wooden crates, sticks, iron rods- all rained down on Asad and he took it without a word. His eyes never left hers as she screamed his name over and over again. Not a sound escaped his lips as the men beat him to death, while his eyes conveyed a thousand words to Zoya. All her questions were answered in that moment as she saw Asad sacrifice his life, just so that she could live for a few more minutes. It was as if she's been set on fire. It was pure agony.
Zoya kept on screaming his name till no sound came out from her throat. Tears flowed endlessly from her eyes as Asad fell to the ground, unmoving and covered in blood. He didn't seem to be breathing. She wished the men would kill her so that she didn't have to watch him die in front of her eyes. If he was going to leave this world forever, then she wanted to go with him.
