"Zoya!" Asad's scream echoed through the empty warehouse. He squinted through the darkness, trying to find some sign of her presence, a confirmation that she was alive. He stumbled as he hurried inside, his eyes searching the deserted area. He didn't know what to do. He'd been sure that he would find Zoya here, as he had followed those goons who had kidnapped her from the wedding, and they had led him here. And now she was nowhere to be found. Asad was almost about to scream out in frustration, when he saw a path of light, barely visible from behind a mountain of boxes stacked against the wall. He hurried towards the light source, only to find that he boxes were concealing a door behind them.
Asad carefully pushed the door wide enough for him to peep inside and what he saw made his heart almost leap out with fear. Zoya was there, still in her bridal attire, gagged and bound to a chair, her eyes closed and even in the dim lighting, he could see bruises forming on her face and arms. Two men were standing on either side of her, holding guns to her head while another man walked upto her and lightly ran his fingers down her jaw. He then removed the piece of cloth tied across her mouth. Asad wanted to chop those fingers off his arms right there for touching what was his. He mentally rebuked himself for thinking along such lines. She was going to get married to Ayaan, for God's sake! She wasn't his!
His mind flickered away briefly from the issue at hand, as he thought about the wedding. Zoya's wedding. With Ayaan.
Zoya had finally found her lost Abbu and it had turned out to be Ayaan's mamujaan, the one man who was ever-ready to give huge lectures on faithfulness and good values. But he himself had fathered a child with a woman, and had then tried to kill her when she'd told him the truth. When Zoya had found him, he had initially refused to accept that he even had another daughter. But then Zoya had shown him those old pictures and had revealed a lot of his secrets, which had then forced him to come out with the truth. But instead of welcoming Zoya into his family with open arms, he had made the situation worse. Zoya was being forced to get married to Ayaan and she refused to reveal her reasons behind agreeing to the marriage. All Asad knew was that father-daughter had a talk and then Zoya was ready to marry Ayaan.
And as far as Ayaan was concerned, he had no issues about getting married to Zoya. Asad knew he liked her. Ayaan had helped Zoya a lot during the time when she had been searching for her father and had developed a liking for her in that process. In fact, Ayaan was overjoyed that she was getting married to him, even though he tried to hide it. The only one getting hurt in this whole drama, was Asad, even though he didn't want to accept it. It had pained him beyond words, to know that Zoya had agreed to the marriage and he didn't know why. Everyone had noticed the change in his behaviour- his ammi, Najma and even Zoya, as she was to stay with them till she got married. He had started avoiding her, and everybody else, shutting himself up in his room and emerging only during meals, or when he had to leave for office. After a while, even Zoya had given up trying to talk to him. Suddenly, Zoya's cry brought him out of his reverie.
"Get away from me!" she shrieked! Asad's hands balled into fists as he heard the man who had touched her a while ago, laugh maliciously. "Who are you and what do you want?" she cried.
"We're just doing our job, Ms. Zoya Farooqui" he told her. "We've been paid an amount we'd never even dreamed of, to finish you off tonight. You know, kill you" he added, as a matter of factly.
"Kill me?" she asked, bewildered. "But, why? What have I done? And who wants to kill me?"
The kidnapper clicked his tongue. "Now I wouldn't reveal that, would I? But, on second thoughts, what's the harm in telling you? You're going to be dead anyway and there's no one here to save you. Well, since I'm human too and since I figured it would be your last wish to know who's thirsty for your blood, I think you deserve to know the answer" he finished, nonchalantly.
"Will you cut the crap and just tell me?" Zoya snapped. Asad couldn't help but feel proud of her. Even though her life was in danger and she knew no one was here to save her, she still wasn't begging and grovelling for mercy. She was, in no way, ready to give those bas***ds the satisfaction of seeing their prisoner beg for freedom.
"Watch the attitude, Ms. Farooqui", warned the kidnapper, taking the gun from one of his accomplices. "Being your cocky self isn't going to get you anywhere"
"And as if crying and pleading is going to get you to set me free" she retorted. "Just tell me who wants me dead so that I can haunt them for the rest of their lives after I die". Asad was amazed at how calm she sounded. If someone were listening to this on the phone, they would think Zoya and her kidnapper were discussing her death over a cup of coffee.
"Your father"
"What?!"
"You heard me, bitch" he said, now wiping the gun on his shirt. "Your father wants you dead because he doesn't want to ruin his family's name. He's one of the most respected people of the city. Think about how people would react when they found out he had another daughter? He would be laughed at and ridiculed openly. So the easiest way out, was to get you out of the way. So, here you are, waiting to bear the brunt of your father's one big mistake".
Asad couldn't believe his ears. Mamujaan wanted to kill her? He wanted to kill his own daughter? What kind of a sick, pathetic coward does that? He thought kidnapping zoya from her own wedding wouldn't attract attention? How stupid could that man be? That man thought he could just take Zoya away and Asad Ahmed Khan wouldn't even lift a finger? Well, he was wrong. With that, Asad stormed into the room.
Asad punched the kidnapper in the face and kicked him in the groin, throwing him on the floor. He had the element of surprise to his advantage and he used it to tackle all three of them at the same time. But it was temporary. The kidnappers came at him together and used all their strength, trying to subdue him. But it barely affected Asad. He was the guy who fought ten goons at once and still managed to get out without a scratch. These three were a cakewalk for him. Soon he had the three of them on the ground, groaning in agony. He hurried to Zoya's side and began to untie her.
"Zoya, are you allright?" he asked her, and immediately felt stupid. Of course she wasn't okay, he told himself. Her face was battered and he noticed rope burns on her wrists and ankles as he untied her. A murderous rage shot up within him which wanted to skin alive every single person who was responsible for her condition. But this wasn't the time to loose his temper.
"Come on" he told Zoya, and steadied her as she stood up. "We have to get out of here before these assholes get up again". Zoya nodded and chucked softly. He looked at her disbelievingly.
"What's so funny?"
"You swore, Mr. Khan. In front of a lady"
Asad looked at her like she'd gone mad and took her hand as they hurried out of the room. They'd barely made it halfway through the warehouse when the lights came on. Asad and Zoya found themselves surrounded by about a dozen men, all of them holding guns which were pointed at them. Asad realized they'd been tricked. These people had been expecting him. Mamujaan knew Asad was going to save Zoya and he wasn't going to let that happen.
"Asad Ahmed Khan, isn't it?" said a voice from behind them, which Asad recognized to be of the same man who was talking to Zoya earlier. He turned around to find him approaching them, still rubbing the spot on his face where Asad had last hit him. "We were expecting you".
"Were you, now?" Asad asked him. "Then you must also be knowing how much you're going to pay for expecting me".
"I don't have orders to kill you. But if you don't leave right now, you'll be forcing me to do it and I don't like unwanted blood on my hands. So, leave".
"Fine. I'll leave. But not without Zoya"
"I'm sorry, I can't let you do that. She stays here"
"Then I'm not leaving either" Asad said, and attacked the man standing nearest to him. And hell broke loose. Men came at him from all sides and Asad kicked and punched anything and everything that came near him. "ZOYA RUN!" he bellowed in between hits.
