Part 18
Maan drove like a maniac back to his guest house. He didn't notice the journey because he was deep in thought. Was he doing the right thing? Was this the only way out? If he went to court, his family name would be dragged through the courts. Dev had already done that several times, and Maan was supposed to be the sensible one. No, Daadi wouldn't be able to handle more family scandal. In Maan's mind, he had made the right choice, the only choice. To save his family name...and protect Geet. He didn't understand his feelings for Geet, but he knew that the way Brij treated her was inhumane and that nobody deserved that sort of treatment.
Geet came downstairs to find the house being decorated. "What is going on Mumma?" Geet asked Rano. "Your wedding of course, beta" she replied patting Geet's head.
Geet was confused. Had the wedding not been called off? Did Dev change his mind? Was he coming back for her?
Brij saw Geet looking confused and before she could ask, he said "Day after tomorrow, you are getting married to Maan". Saying this he walked off to find Daarji.
Daarji and Brij sat in Daarji's office with the door firmly closed. "Chalo, the family honour will be preserved. Good work Brij. Not that it really matters, but is Maan's reputation, as bad as Dev's family said it was?" Daarji asked. "On talking to his Munshi and various other people in the village who have known the Khuranas for years, he seems to be a good man. But maybe he behaves differently in Delhi? But as you said, it doesn't matter. He will take Geet off our hands, and our reputation will be intact again". Brij replied. "And I will make sure that no one dares to gossip about us in the village"
The minute he entered the door of the guest house Maan began making calls. One to a jeweller in Amritsar to send some diamond rings of several sizes, since he didn't know Geet's ring size and a mangalsutra of his specification as soon as possible. The second call was to a designer, Ms Gupta also in Amritsar. He ordered his wedding outfit and was about to give the specifications for Geet's lengha, when he heard a knock on the door. "Wait a minute Ms Gupta, there is someone at the door" he told the patient designer on the phone. Maan opened the door and saw that it was Ms Roy. He let her into the guest house and continued with his conversation with Ms Gupta. Ms Roy was fuming, overhearing about Geet's outfit, but what could she do? "So you will send the outfit to Ms Handa at..."
"Maan, I mean Mr Khurana, I am going to Amrisar tomorrow, so I can collect the outfits and drop Geet's lengha at her house personally if you want" Ms Roy interrupted sweetly.
"Ok, Ms Roy...Yes, Ms Gupta, Ms Roy will pick up the outfits from you tomorrow. Make sure they are ready on time." Cutting the call, Maan turned to Ms Roy and said "Thank you Ms Roy. That is very kind of you"
"No problem Maan, I mean Mr Khurana. Do you not think you should call me Reena now? I mean, I find this Ms Roy too formal. We are friends now, are we not?" Reena said hopefully.
"Ms Roy, we share a professional relationship, and I would like to keep it that way" Maan replied.
Reena was crest fallen, but didn't let any emotion show. "Right you are Mr Khurana. I understand. Everything will remain strictly professional. Just the way you like it"
After a few minutes of silence, Reena asked "Mr Khurana, do you think you are doing the right thing? I mean no disrespect, but is marriage the only option? Brij did say that no-one in the village would be willing to marry Geet, but that does not mean that someone from another village could not be paid to marry her."
Maan did not like where the conversation was going. "Ms Roy, when I need your opinion, I will ask for it. Please stay within your limits. I have thought this matter through very thoroughly and I have given my word. As you very well know, I never go back on my word. I will marry Geet the day after tomorrow and that is final"
Reena had certainly been shown her place. She didn't like it, but what could she do? "Ok Mr Khurana, I understand. I was only trying to help, as your lawyer of course."
Maan just nodded. "Look I have a few things to tie up here, so if you don't mind, could you leave me to get on with them?"
Reena was being dismissed again. Maan didn't value her...yet. She would have to wait for her opportunity.
"Ok Mr Khurana. Have a good evening" Reena said as she was leaving.
"Ms Roy, I trust that you won't forget to pick up the outfits tomorrow" Maan said, not looking at Reena who stood at the door.
"Of course, I won't forget Mr Khurana". Reena smirked. "I will make sure Geet's outfit is fit for her status" she mumbled, thankfully for her unheard by Maan.
Geet waited outside and had heard most of the conversation between Maan and Ms Roy. She did not like Ms Roy. What did Ms Roy have against Geet? She didn't even know her!
She knocked on the door of the guest house, once Reena was out of sight.
"Who is it?" Maan asked exasperatedly. Will no one let him get on with his work?
He opened the door to find Geet staring at him. "Is it true? Have you agreed to marry me? Are you out of your mind?" she blasted.
Maan pulled Geet into the room abruptly, knocking her into his chest in the process and closed the door. He felt warm and smelt manly to Geet. She was so lost in his thoughts, when Maan quickly separated from her after feeling her breath on his chest. He cleared his throat and said "Ahem, you were saying something Geet?" Maan looked at her lost face.
His proximity had confused her and she tried to recollect why she was here. Finally she remembered and said. "Oh, em, uh...yes, wo...ha... have you agreed to marry me?"
Unable to look her in the eyes, Maan turned away and got busy with his books and muttered "Yes".
Geet held Maan by the elbow to turn him around to face her and asked "Don't turn away from me! Why would you agree to marry me? It is not as if you love me. You are doing this because you are being forced to do so. Brij Veerji is forcing you. What good do you think will be gained by this marriage?"
Maan looked at Geet seriously now. "Before I answer your question, I would like to ask you a question. Do you have any objection to this marriage? I mean, were you in love with the other boy?"
"I was not/ am not in love with anyone" Geet stated honestly.
"And?" Maan pushed for the rest of her answer.
"And I don't want to get married. Actually I never wanted to get married. It was not in my plan, at least not for the next few years. I wanted to work and get some life experience, not become someone's wife and be chained to the kitchen, like my Mum and Taiyjii. But no-one ever asked me what I want" Geet said sadly. She felt she could unburden herself to Maan without any risk of punishment.
Maan sat down in front of her, and asked her to sit too. "Geet, we will have to get married. There is no choice her, that I can see...."
"But..." Geet tried to interject.
"Geet don't interrupt, let me finish. Your brother will drag both our families through the courts fighting this case. It will bring both our families into disrepute. I cannot afford for that to happen with my family and neither can you. You have a younger sister. Do you want her reputation to be affected too? Also, what will Brij do to you? He has already punished you severely for not signing the statement. Imagine what he will do to you if you do not agree to marry me?" Maan stated calmly. Geet could only nod in agreement.
"And don't even think of trying to commit suicide again! That is not a solution." Maan warned. "Look Geet, I too didn't have any plans for marriage. To be honest, I would stay a bachelor all my life if I could. But this marriage would make one person happy and she means the world to me. My Daadi. So, I have agreed to this marriage for very selfish reasons, Geet" Maan continued. "By marrying me Geet, I will take you away from Brij and his backward ideas, and give you all the freedom you want. You will not be chained to the kitchen and if you want to work or study, I will support you in this."
Maan looked at Geet who just stared at him adoringly. She had never met anyone like him ever. Her Adi bhai in Dehli was good, but Maan took being good and righteous to another level.
"So Geet, do you have anything to say???"
She was again so lost in him, that she didn't know what to say or where to begin. "Uh...eh...um..."
Feeling that the mood in the room was quite heavy, Maan tried to lighten it by joking "Have you forgotten how to talk? I thought the Handas were famous for their talking skills..." That comment was enough to wake Geet out of her daze.
"I was just taking a moment to process all of the information you have given me." she said defensively. "We Handas don't just talk, we occasionally think too. What do you expect in return from me?"
"I have no expectations from you except to respect my Daadi and not interfere with my life.If you get freedom from this marriage, I to expect the same. Is that acceptable?"
She stood up and extended her hand to shake Maan's hand. "We have a deal. I will marry you." She couldn't let go of his hand. It felt so warm and comforting.
"Geet we have shook on the deal. Can you let go of my hand now?" Maan smirked. Geet flushed red, let go of his hand and ran out of the guest house. What was happening to her? What was Maan doing to her?
Dev was wallowing in the hot tub with his latest girlfriend. He was anxious. He hadn't heard anything from his Daadi. Should she not have rung him by now? He rang Naintara. "Have you heard from Daadi yet? Surely Maan would have rung her to tell her about the case?"
"Relax Dev. It is too early. Also the justice system in India takes time. Maybe the case has not been heard yet. Let's give it a few days and then I will ring my source in HP to find out what is going on. Ok darling. See you soon. I should be home in about half an hour"
Dev disconnected the phone."Oh shit." He turned to the girl beside him and said"you have to leave, my wife will kill you if she finds you here".
Even if Naintara had rung her source in HP, she would find it very hard to find any information on Geet, Maan or the Handas. Brij and his friends had been very effective. They made sure that there was no talk or gossip about them.
