Chapter 12 ~ Secrets We Hold

"Lavanya?" he paused. "I need you to go see if she is okay"

"And how will that help you in anyway?

"At least I'll know she is not doing anything stupid which Khushi is very capable of" he smiled painfully.

"I don't think it's a good idea ASR. I mean if she finds out you sent me, you might lose her further"

Lavanya heard a low mock laugh from other side of the line. "Sure I have already lost everything Lavanya. I want you to keep whatever is left of hers"

"Okay. I don't think I can stay long enough because I have meeting lined up here in our London office"

"f**k the office! Listen when she left this place she couldn't even walk straight. I need you to book the first flight to Mumbai and find her!!"

"Lavanya this conversation is over and you're leaving. NOW" he emphasized the last word so she would get the point and leave him alone. Earlier when he had seen her in his office, he thought she was here to greet him. But no she had to bring back things that were buried long back.

"I'm sorry but I am not leaving anywhere till you don't answer my questions" with a steady gaze she continued to sip down her half cold coffee. "And please tell someone to get me another coffee. Since I don't think I am leaving any time soon" she smiled (not warmly).

"Yes you are. And I am suppose to be your boss so no I don't need to 'answer' anything to anyone" he said pulling the cup away from her. "I am not just anyone. I am your friend who was suppose to be marrying you last year" Lavanya knew brining up the marriage in these sensitive talks helps her to get through to Arnav. So what? He was enough manipulative. Why couldn't she do a bit of it to get him to talk?

Inhaling a large amount of oxygen, he sighed. "A friend who shoved her brother in place of me. For my wife" tiredly rubbing his temples. "Hey! C'mon!!!! Now I am the bad guy???" Lavanya had almost jumped up to her feet. It wasn't even surprising that Arnav was blaming her. Wasn't it the usual grill? Losing Khushi should have changed him to a better person, but clearly he required a bang on his head. "You were the one asked me to take care of her Arnav!" she walked over to a now sitting Arnav. "Exactly. I asked you not you're useless brother" he muttered unable to raise his voice further due to his hard-core headache.

"First my brother is not useless, he owns restaurants across the country. Second I work at the NY (New York) AR designs so I couldn't stay with Khushi. Third, you were hovering over me like a ghost to take care of her so I had to assign my brother that duty before leaving. I can't help it if he took the job literally and got engaged to her ok? OKAYYY???" she slammed her hand on the glass desk to gain his attention and control her breathing. While the person she wanted reaction from was considering calling an ambulance.

"Ok" managed Arnav to a bit reddened Lavanya.

"Look I have no idea what happened after I left Mumbai but I do know that when I was leaving something had died inside that girl. She, use to just sit in one place and read all types of brainless books. I mean can you imagine Khushi sitting in one place. Reading books?? And then booom one fine day I come back and she is running around with paper works" Not that Arnav wasn't listening to her but he was also intently observing something out of his window. Maybe trying grasp, all of what Lavanya was saying.

Knowing this was his way of listening, she continued "I understand it's not the best feeling to watch someone you love marry somebody else but all your life you have decided for her. Let her do it herself this time Arnav. If she thinks Armaan is the one then he's the one. You have to walk away and your not doing a very good job of it" she smiled, a genuine one this time.

"Hey! Dinner at my place today, don't forget. I am cooking :)"

Armaan smiled at Khushi's text, which arrived a minute ago. They had this ridiculous ritual of inviting each other for dinner at least once a week, where one whose inviting had to cook. Khushi was an amazing cook. We all knew that. She was like a living recipe book. But when it came to Armaan he wasn't that great at, he would just cheat and order from outside and lie that it's homemade. Even though Khushi knew about his little lie, she pretends to be surprised each time.

On his way back home Arnav parked his white SUV around the corner of a dark street. Wait this street didn't even lead to his mansion. Something was suspicious here because he didn't get out from his car for a very long time till another car came by and stopped opposite his. I don't mean to freak anyone here but a man wearing black leather jacket got out. Not masculine but well a built man.

Two taps on the side window made Arnav snap out of whatever he was thinking. Frowning he first glanced at his wristwatch and then lazily lowered the window down.

"You're late"

"Traffic" the strange man shrugged.

"Do you have anything for me?"

"Ah yes not very significant but he deactivated his old number" he actually sounded more official now than creepy.

"Hm. What else?"

"He tried to get access to his old bank account but since you seized it long back he couldn't get access"

"There is a possibility of him being in the town?"

"Sir. Yes" Oh. The sir just explains that he works under Arnav. Wonder why he works in dark streets instead of open daylights?

"Son of a bitch" raged Arnav.

"Right. I'll call if I have more information"

The doorbell went on for the second time in a row. Jeez! Who rings the bell of their own house? When it went to the third one, Armaan was just pure annoyed! He knew Khushi was doing it on purpose so that he would miss first two minutes of his favorite show. Comedy circus was the only show he watched but even that had to be intruded. Earlier Khushi had forgotten some unessential ingredient for the food, which, according to her would make the food taste different. So she volunteered and stepped out and now she was ringing her own bell.

Flinging himself off the sofa he moved backwards trying to glance at the television screen till his eyesight could reach.

"KHUSHI WHAT—" he almost dropped the coke can in his hand. Oh boy this was going to be bad.

"Armaan I didn't expect you here" said an equally surprised Anjali.

A nervous fake laugh escaped from his mouth, "we need to stop meeting like this", he said trying his best to act cool upon seeing her.

"True." "If only Khushi had warned me about it" she muttered.

"Sorry what was that?" clearly missing the last part of her rumbling not intended for him to hear, Armaan got closer, in return surprising her further. Anjali's first instinct was to move backward and in the process she stumbled and was about to land on her ass when Armaan's strong grip on her shoulder landed her right into his chest.

This was supposed to be awkward. Very awkward. Strangely something transpired in between them making Anjali release a lump of air out of her lungs and clutch on to the comfort that felt warm. It was always terrifying to stumble in her condition. This was the last thing that should be happening to them. Falling into each other's arm. Disgusting!

"You need to stop stumbling around me", he whispered but she swore there was a hint of amusement. Remembering how last time in the party she had stumbled in front of him, she pushed him away.

Tiny little flush on either side of Anjali's cheek made him realize he was still holding on to the edge of her elbow. Letting go of it quickly he asked "why are you here again?" to cover up the awkwardness. "Uh. There is a founder's day gathering for our orphanage this weekend. I had come to invite Khushi", replied Anjali recovering.

"But looks like she is not home so I'll leave the invitation with you" she continued fishing into her purse for the invitation.

"No. I mean don't be silly. Khushi would kill me if she comes to know I let you go from the door" what hell was he doing? He needed to stop talking.

"No really it's fine"

"Please come in" he smiled. Nooo stop smiling like that.

"Thank you, Ar—. Armaanji"

Now now wasn't this going to be one interesting night?
