Actor Sandhya Mridul has sparked an important conversation about class based discrimination after sharing a disturbing experience involving her mother’s domestic worker. Taking to Instagram, the actor recounted how the young woman was allegedly denied a basic service at multiple salons, an incident that left her deeply upset and raised uncomfortable questions about the treatment of domestic staff in urban residential spaces.

Detailing the episode in a video, Sandhya revealed that her mother had accompanied their house help to a salon located in her residential complex for a haircut. However, the salon allegedly refused to serve her. According to Sandhya, her mother then tried another salon, only to face a similar response. Despite requesting, arguing, and even offering to pay extra, the worker was reportedly turned away once again.

The actor said the experience had a significant emotional impact on the young woman. Recalling the aftermath, Sandhya shared, “She was sad. I can’t even imagine the feeling. What day and age are we living in that we are still behaving like this? And there are buildings where they say, oh, help can’t come into this, I mean. Kaun ho yaar tum itne entitled logon? Kya bakwaas hai yaar? This is really hurtful.”

Eventually, a different salon agreed to provide the haircut, after which Sandhya’s mother took the worker out for lunch. While the immediate problem was resolved, the actor said the incident reflected a much deeper social issue that extends beyond one establishment.

In her video, Sandhya argued that responsibility for such discrimination does not lie solely with businesses or building staff. She suggested that societal attitudes play an equally important role in creating and sustaining these barriers.

“And you know something, we can’t just blame these salons and the people guarding the lift. It’s us, many of us, who are asking for this. Who are saying, please don’t allow these people into salons, please don’t allow these people into elevators. I really think it’s time for some of us s**tty people who are doing this to change,” she said.

The actor deliberately chose not to identify the salon involved. Explaining her decision in the caption accompanying her post, Sandhya wrote, “I’m not naming the salon because it’s a private salon in the building where my mother lives, and I want to protect her privacy.” She further clarified, “Also, naming the salon is not the purpose of this post. The issue is much larger than one establishment. It’s the mindset. That’s what we need to change.”

Expanding on her concerns, Sandhya highlighted the often overlooked contribution of domestic workers to households across the country. “Our domestic staff are not invisible. They care for our homes, our families, and often become family themselves. Watching a young girl be turned away from a salon simply because of who she was left me deeply saddened. She’s just a young kid in her 20’s who was excited about a haircut. And we ruined it for her,” she wrote.

In a follow up video, the actor thanked those who supported her message and clarified that the woman she referred to as a “girl” was actually 26 years old. She explained that the term was used affectionately and not to imply that the worker was underage. Sandhya also said she intends to address the matter personally once she returns to her mother’s residence and called for a broader shift in how domestic workers, delivery personnel, and other service workers are treated in everyday life.
