Looks like Sagar Pictures is continuing its tradition of making up whatever it feels like - just like they did about Krishna in DBSK. Rama proposing to Vishwamitra that he wants all of Sita's sisters/cousins for his brothers was bad enough, but to show Lakshman threatening to attack Sita was just obscene.

I'll try and avoid any comparisons, but in ASR, when they showed the other suitors of Sita attack the 4 brothers during a visit to Mithila, that account, although new, was later found to be from the Ananda Ramayana, which was a fringe script written during the classical age. But this story I've not heard of anywhere, and it's certainly not in Tulsi, which is what this show claims to be based on.

Anybody else ever read or heard of anything remotely like it?

Is this any surprise to us Vrish?😆 Sagar Pictures showed ridiculous stories during Dwarkadheesh as well. Now they're ruining Ramayan too though it's such a simple story compared to Mahabharat. I don't think there's any basis for what they're showing.

hmmm may I😛 well the story is taken from the folk tales of himachal pradesh madhyapradesh and uttranchal its mentioned in some sources its mentioned ramayana that the demon like banasur and ravana came to attend sita's swayamavar
edit : banasur is mentioned in valmiki ramayana... ravan isnt)
... there are few folktale which are told in this context in a folktale of uttaranchal and himachal pradesh it is said banasur wanted to marry goddess sita he went in the wedding but there saw grand form of ram and lakshma... somewhere its mentioned that lakshman was guarding ram and sita he was scared so he disappeared quitely...thereafter banasur met ravana and there is long conversation between banasur and ravana and banasur accepted the greatness of lord rama and warned ravana about it ...(it can be found in youtube)😛

in the himachal pradesh folktales it is said that after that banasur gave up the thoughts to marry sita maa and concentrated on his kingdom once supernakha fell in love with banasur and asked ravana to get her married to banasur r avana, on the other hand, yearns to possess Banasur's land . He pays Banasur a visit and persuades the reluctant Banasur to marry Shupnakha. On the night of the wedding, just as Banasur is entering the bridal chamber, the massive flower decoration on the doorway falls on him. While he is trying to free himself from the tangled garlands of flowers, Ravana attacks and kills him ' all this as Shupnakha watches helplessly. Ravana then falls at his sister's feet, begs her forgiveness and vows to always look after her and protect her honour.Much later, Shupnakha reminds the reluctant Ravana of this vow and forces him to abduct Sita to avenge her dishonour (its from himachal pradesh)

then there are certain floklore of central india specifically MP generally the tales focusses on lakshmana and sita ji it is said that once banasur was enchanted with sitamaa beauty and he advanced towards her lakshmana was furious as he was guarding her he threatened him and lord rama arrived there banasur saw the grand form of lord rama he seeked apologies from both brother and then left to the mountains...😳 (its in the exile period the folktales are popular in bagwar and banpur area of MP where banasur use to reign )

maybe they have combined these folktales rest i dont know😳 hoped it helped

p.s. i know banasur is one who fought battle with lord krishna😳

Ok, if there is a basis for it in HP folk tales, I guess I can stomach it. Although it's not there in Valmiki that Ravana attended Sita's swayamvara - I think that Krittivas (the Bong Ramayan) may have been the first to put Ravana @ Mithila. Otherwise, why would Shurpanakha have had to describe to him what Sita was like, if he already knew?

Also, in Valmiki, Shurpanakha's hubby is Vidyutjeeva (lightning tongue), who was killed by Ravan himself. But Shurpanakha never re-married, and instead lived w/ Khar & Dooshan.

Anyway, I digress. Back to this story - Lakshman firing arrows & wounding Sita - 🤢🤢🤢 It's not comparisons w/ ASR, but these sort of depictions that are likely to sink it.
