OMG Oh My God!
By Taran Adarsh, 27 Sep 2012, 23:05 hrs IST
It actually transpired in 2008 in Nebraska in the United States. A Senator filed a lawsuit against God, seeking a ruling against "God's harmful activities". The grievance got instantly dismissed by the court because God could not be notified for the lack of a proper address.

Much earlier, in 2001, in an Australian movie THE MAN WHO SUED GOD, starring Billy Connolly and directed by Mark Joffe, a fisherman defies an insurance company which rejected compensation for a destroyed boat, since, the insurance company claims, it was damaged due to an 'Act of God'. Distressed, the fisherman files a claim against God, naming church administrators as ambassadors of God and thereby the respondents.

And now we have our very own Kanjibhai [Paresh Rawal], a businessman, filing a lawsuit against God and challenging the insurance company, which refuses compensation for a destroyed shop because of an earthquake, since, the insurance company argues, it was destroyed due to an 'Act of God'. Troubled, the businessman files a claim against God, naming various godmen or dharmagurus as delegates of God and by this means, the respondents.

Be cautioned! Paresh Rawal brings up sensitive issues in OMG - OH MY GOD!, discussing the Almighty and godmen. In fact, he mocks at the malpractices of phony godmen, takes pot-shots against superstitions and the unfounded rituals that we sightlessly pursue and hits out at the money-making industry that religion has developed into in the present day. Chances are you may find his sarcastic and scornful statements offensive.

Also, a graceful silk dhoti, gold circlet/headdress and jewel-studded ornaments… that's the way God was depicted in most Hindi movies of yore [YEHI HAI ZINDAGI]. But films like VAAH! LIFE HO TOH AISI! [2005] and GOD TUSSI GREAT HO [2008] made an exception, portraying God in a modern avtaar, like the Hollywood movie BRUCE ALMIGHTY [2003] did. Now Akshay Kumar appears elegantly dressed in formal suits and designer outfits, depicting the role of Lord Krishna in OMG - OH MY GOD!.

OMG - OH MY GOD! is an adaptation of the enormously admired play 'Krishan Vs Kanhaiya'. For those who have viewed the play, get ready to be surprised by some fresh sequences/episodes that have been integrated in the movie. But those who haven't watched 'Krishan Vs Kanhaiya', then watching its film interpretation should be a fine experience. It has all the elements that make a movie work: an interesting premise, amusing episodes and an underlining message that settles with you.

Kanji Mehta [Paresh Rawal] is an atheist, who runs an antique shop. For him, God and religion are nothing more than a business proposition. He purchases idols of God and sells them as antique idols at double or triple its original price. His wife, on the other hand, is a devout believer.

When a slight tremor of an earthquake shakes the city, it causes the destruction of only one shop in the entire city -- Kanji's shop. The insurance company invokes this act of God and promptly rejects the claim. Frustrated, and left with no option, Kanji decides to file a case against God on the premise that if God is responsible for his loss, then it is God's responsibility to compensate him for his losses.

Kanji sends legal notices to the various high priests and heads of various religious sects. In the court, Kanji argues his own case, not because he doesn't trust any lawyer, but because it's difficult to find a lawyer who is willing to put God on trial. The proceedings begin. An agitated crowd gathers outside the court premises and upon sighting Kanji emerging from the court, run to attack him.

Just as Kanji begins to lose ground, a man enters... riding a bike. He swoops Kanji off the road straight on his bike and speeds off. The man introduces himself. His name is Lord Krishna... the God.

OMG - OH MY GOD! carries a social message, a significant one, but the best part is, it does so without losing the wit and humor. Most importantly, it doesn't get preachy, nor does it deviate into the sermonizing mode. The film demonstrates Kanji as a nastik or a non-believer in God at the very outset, who, paradoxically, uses religion to run his business. The episodes in the first hour raise a chuckle, in fact you wear a smile ceaselessly. The turn of events in the latter part gives the film that extra sheen, thus raising the bar. The courtroom drama is transfixing and the underlying message that God dwells within us is profoundly heartwarming.

Director Umesh Shukla keeps you involved in the on-screen happenings, courtesy an absorbing screenplay. Also, Umesh's choice of actors for supporting roles adds a lot of sparkle to various sequences. On the flipside, the film is stretched in the second half [more towards the final stages]. Also, the execution of a few sequences is plain ordinary. To cite an instance, the introduction of Akshay could've been more dramatic and spectacular.

OMG - OH MY GOD! is the cinematic adaptation of a play, but in keeping with the splendor of Hindi movies and the requirement of the script, the sets/production values [right from Kanji's shop to his Bhuleshwar home to the courtroom] are most appropriate. There's not much scope for songs in the movie, but the 'Go Govinda' song is full-on energetic.

Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal -- this is a deadly combo when it comes to satirist flicks. The duo is by now famous when it comes to keeping the audience in splits with their faultless humorist timing. Paresh Rawal is acknowledged as a supremely accomplished and consummate actor of our times. The veteran carries the film on his shoulders and executes this challenging character with candor. He's the show-stopper, the scene stealer. Akshay kumar is significantly present in the second half and is fabulous in a role that seems tailor-made for him. His sequences with Paresh contribute enormously to the delightful moments.

Mithun Chakraborty is incredible in a role that has negative shades. Om Puri is exceptional in a cameo. Mahesh Manjrekar is effective. Govind Namdev leaves a strong impression. Nikhil Ratnaparkhi is satisfactory. Murli Sharma and Poonam Jhawar are alright. Sonakshi Sinha and Prabhu Dheva sparkle in a song.

On the whole, OMG - OH MY GOD! is a thought-provoking adaptation of a massively successful play. A movie tackling a sensitive and an untouched subject matter, it will find its share of advocates and adversaries, but the social message the movie conveys comes across loud and clear and that's one of the prime reasons why OMG - OH MY GOD! becomes a deserving watch.

OMG-Oh My god- TimesOfIndia Review 3.5 stars

OMG: Oh My God

Story: Atheist Kanjilal Mehta takes 'God' to court after an earthquake destroys his shop. Suddenly, 'Krishna Vasudev Yadav' shows up – does divine intervention occur?

Movie Review: Straight on, OMG is Paresh Rawal's movie – and one of his best. Akshay Kumar plays a small and sacred role but OMG is largely powered by Rawal's performance as Kanjilal Mehta, a cynical Gujarati shopkeeper in Mumbai's Chor Bazaar, hardcore atheist who merrily dupes the believing into buying Krishna statues before whom Kanji trills, "Kootchie kootchie, natkhat!" The atheist even disrupts a matki phoro ceremony for Krishna where, despite a cracking guest performance by Sonakshi Sinha and Prabhudeva to 'Go-Go-Go-Govinda' – watch the latter's buttery moves and the former's rock-chick hair – Kanjilal rains on the party.

An earthquake follows, reducing just one shop to rubble – Kanjilal's. His insurance company refuses to pay, citing an act of God. Facing ruin, Kanji takes God – as represented by 'collection officers', religious leaders Swami Leeladhar (Chakrabarty, super), Siddheshwar (Namdeo, hamming it up to Italian deli-level) and sexy sanyasin Mata Gopi (Poonam Jhawar) – to court demanding compensation. Goons try to kill Kanji – but 'consultant' Krishna Vasudev Yadav saves him via a thrilling motorbike ride – then moves into his house. The trial circles deep philosophy, yet tongues stay firmly in cheek as Kanji tells the outraged swamis, "Ye mujhe kya Gita sikhayenge – inka IQ room temperature se bhi low hai."

Rawal is pure pleasure when he naughtily points out, "Recession mein toh inka dhanda double ho jata hai!", when debating being boiled in oil down in hell, he asks, "Mein aadmi hoon ya pakora?" or, when he states that such religion – superstition, fear, ignorance – "insaan ko bebas ya aatankwadi banata hai." It is far better, he remarks, to donate milk to the hungry than pour it over a shrine – and into a drain, to give to the needy rather than enrich religious commerce working on human weakness and woe via 'exchange offers' with the divine.

Rawal's conviction is OMG's bedrock – but its beauty comes from his dynamics with Krishna (Kumar, channeling a Twilight-like zone of motorbikes, overcoats and chiseled looks), who saves his life, educates him via sacred texts and gently instructs an annoyed housewife yelling Kanji is a nastik to eat her ice-cream before it melts. Few Bollywood actors do loopy-plus-hot as well as Kumar and he's silken here, all delicate hints and half-smiles, smoothly playing the flute as Kanji shouts, "O Hari Prasad! O Chaurasia!"

Their chemistry is electric, Rawal wryly noting, "Suit-boot mein aya Kanhaiya", backed by Chakrabarty too, biting into the role of a long-haired swami speaking in softly mincing tones, using his hands down to one finger in a terrific take-off. Other acting (Puri, a Muslim lawyer helping Kanji, Manjrekar as lawyer Sardesai, Lubna Salim as Kanji's wide-eyed wife Susheela) is strictly average but covered by an astonishingly good background track pepping up the pace, adding zing but never distracting from a complex story told in a simple way.

On the downside, OMG's production values are not high-gloss and it sags and looks stagey at times. Importantly though, in a nation obsessed with taweezes and tonsures, fasts and fasaads, the symbolic over the sensible, OMG conveys a serious message this festive season – God is to be found in human beings. And, rather like Hindi films of an earlier age, it does so in a light and unusual way.

Hallelujah.

Rating: 2.5/5 stars (Two-and-a-half stars)

There's no Believer knocking on your door and giving you a booklet about Him. Nor someone kicking a kitten and asking you, "Where's your God now?" It's a rather interesting take on God, his so-called "mediums" and the rituals that have been mindlessly passed on since generations. Sounds preachy? Well, the movie isn't.

Kanji (Paresh Rawal) is a not just an atheist, this non-believer exploits people's faith to run his business. By selling idols of gods with make-believe tales, Kanji Lalji Mehta earns a living, and also the wrath of his God-fearing wife, and the man/woman himself, God. When his shop is destroyed in a curious earthquake (that singles out his property to wreck in the entire vicinity), Kanji doesn't fret much as he has it insured. But the insurance company rejects his claim on the basis that their cover does not include an "act of God".

Driven to the edge, Kanji decides to take up the matter with the ultimate authority: in this case, God himself. He files a case in the court accusing God of destroying his property and hence liable to pay him the fine. Since God has no particular address, Kanji sends the notice to all the self-proclaimed God-men who claim to be in constant touch with Him.

So now Kanji has to argue the case against a colourful cast of holy people including the hand-flicking Mithun Chakraborthy, the fiery Siddheshwar Maharaj (Govind Namdeo) and eye-candy Gopi Maiyya (Poonam Jhawer). Not only does Kanji have to prove that God does exist, he also has to show that He is responsible for Kanji's loss.

Enter Bhagwaan (Akshay Kumar).

Does Kanji win, with God by his side? Does he become a believer? Watch for yourself and decide.

OMG Oh My God! Review: Script Analysis

Adapted from a Gujarati play by Bhavesh Mandalia, writer Umesh Shukla has adapted the drama to the big screen quite skillfully. Paresh Rawal's character Kanjilal gets some of the best dialogues and thespian does full justice to them. Kanjilal's arguments and counter-questions are very well thought out. The take on the God-men is very interesting. The best part was the parallel drawn to the Mahabharata towards the end, with Krishna (Akshay) re-playing his role as the legendary charioteer-advisor for a warrior (Arjun then, Kanji now).

Though the story and script are well done and brings out thought provoking questions, the problem is that the film seems to veer away from the original topic and becomes more about false God-men than about the very existence of God. The TV debate seemed just for the heck of it. Though necessary, Kanji's illness towards the end is too contrived.

OMG Oh My God! Review: Star Performances

Paresh Rawal gives a stellar performance as Kanji. He delivers his dialogues so effortlessly and casually that you really cheer for this twisted hero. Akshay Kumar does well as Bhagwan/Krishna but sometimes the writers seem to try too hard to rub it in that he's the Dark Cowherd. Mithun Chakraborty is a gem as one of the God-men but his stereotypical "broken-wrist" act can make you wince. Govind Namdeo goes a bit over the top as the saffron clad Siddheshwar Maharaj but suits his role. Though Poonam Jhawer doesn't get much to do as Gopi Maiyya, her very presence will make you grin. Mithun, Govind and Poonam's characters have some very real life inspirations which makes them all the more fun on screen.

Mahesh Manjrekar is good as the lawyer. Sonakshi Sinha and Prabhu Deva are fun in their guest appearances.

OMG Oh My God! Review: Direction, Music & Technical Aspects

Umesh Shukla does justice to the script with his direction. Amar Mohile's background music is good. Songs by Himesh Reshammiya, Anjjan – Meet Bros, Sachin and Jigar are alright with Go Go Govinda and Mere Nishaan the only ones that deserve mention. Sethu Sriram's cinematography is nice. Editing is alright. The special effects are a bit clunky.

OMG Oh My God! Review: The Last Word

For once, there's a movie that wants you to use your brains instead of just clapping and whistling away at the mindless action/sex scenes. Watch OMG Oh My God also because it has good performances and an interesting concept.
